Official Team Fortress 2 Game Nights (PC)

So my Naughty crate contained a Festive Fish...

... but it has the old issue where it gets twisted.

So....

... I end up with a Festive Duck!

I've seen that issue before. It's more of a one off thing.

Or in my case, a 73-off thing. I see that almost every time I start to lay down the fish-law.

I think it happens on crit hit connections.

Must mean I don't crit with my fish that often.

You also have to actually hit the other person too.

Trying to see if I can get back into this game so I can try to settle on just one multiplayer shooter for a while, and I'd just like to know if you people ever play MvM or have an MvM server. I still haven't been able to try that mode out yet.

Also, not TF-related, but you guys don't have CS or DOTA 2 servers do you?

When I start getting cursed for sniping, you know it's a good day. IMAGE(http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/866080546811802770/9E2F741CD5704E4D46763267B466FF262CCB0677/)

Mind you, at least 4 of those deaths are from Brainz.

Hey Red, long time no see. We do have some people who play MvM -- Infernarl and I have been trying to get mvm_coaltown_event going intermittently, and I think T-Prime and kexx and maybe some other folks are still interested. We do still have a private MvM server (will chat you the IP) but because of the relatively low interest, it hasn't seen much action. We might want to think about either turning it off or making it public.

Oh, and I've settled on my mvm_coaltown_event pyro setup:

Weapons:
Backburner
Reserve Shooter (rarely used, can swap for anything else)
Back Scratcher (ditto)

Personal upgrades:
2x crit resist
2x blast resist
1x bullet resist
1x health regen
1x move speed

Flamethrower upgrades:
4x damage
3x ammo capacity
3x health on kill
3x airblast force

Upgrade path:
Upgrade bullet resist at least one more level before pairs of rapid fire soldiers + heavies arrive
Max crit resist, then blast resist and bullet resist
Upgrade move speed, health regen, airblast force, and health on kill when there's an excess of cash

Priorities:
1) Poof bomb into pit
2) Get crit canteens and destroy tank
3) Get uber canteens and destroy/impede mega robots

Keys to success:
1) Amazing scout -- picked up almost everything, we filled in admirably during a brief disconnect
2) Plenty of buff banner + crits on tanks -- multiple tanks were taken down at the last possible moment
3) Everyone knew to seek high ground during spy rush
4) Something kept pushing ultra medics apart from ultra heavies -- rage knockback?
5) Pyro using lots of uber canteens to a) keep the bomb near the start once robots start getting perma-crits [after spy rush] and b) poof half of the final medic/heavy pairs into a pit
6) Have a goodjer teammate; Infernarl, you rock my world!

Yep! I am just learning the power of the rage knockback. With the buff banner going it filled up almost instantly. Combined with the penetration I could keep the giant groups in one spot.

::Blush::

I'm pleased to report that Cyranix and I defeated wave 666.

We had a team of

Heavy x2
Pyro
Scout
Engineer
Soldier

I've read that the spy wave in the middle is the trickiest part, and that sure seems to be true. After that there is just a victory lap through all the classes, although the spammed uber heavy medic at the end could have been trouble if Cyranix had not poofed them into the pit.

I played as heavy and I mostly stayed on the roof.

The soldier's buff banner was a big help since he knew to stand by the Heavies instead of running around. I think he was running black box.

I had so much money by the end I actually bought jump height upgrades.

Also just general to all of MVM, it seems like the medic bots are when failed waves usually come apart.

Man it sounds like you're talking about a completely different game o_0

So how hard is it to achieve that? I played a couple of MVM maps and they were relatively difficult, but I figured it was because of the pubbies.

One of these days... I shall join you guys in full MvM glory.

Shuddup, or I might join the club again in MvM

It is a very different game in many ways, essentially FPS meets tower defense. There's a bit of trial and error as you figure out responses to the various combinations of robotic enemies -- some of which can be addressed through FPS skills, some of which can be addressed through RPG-like upgrades -- but each wave is essentially a puzzle (whose solution affects your ability to solve the next puzzle, to some degree, via the cash/upgrade mechanism). I really like this mode because, as I'm sure any of you can attest, I am generally not a great individual player going head-to-head against another person but can be very successful in cooperative attainment of objectives.

The normal waves of any map should be almost a cakewalk for the GWJ crew; you generally only need two people who know what they're doing to win these. Advanced maps require more strategy, skill, and teamwork (though sometimes you see successful teams that pursue six individual strategies in lieu of true teamwork). Expert maps and Wave 666 absolutely require a team-coordinated strategy and the ability of each individual to fulfill their role -- I consider it a real stroke of luck that I beat Wave 666 with only one GWJ teammate because most pubbies are, well, pubbies.

For Wave 666 specifically, there are some points that are really tough even with a well-coordinated team. The spy rush (at ~55% remaining) is brutal because there are multiple tanks in play as well, so you need sustained damage and crits; insta-kills from a horde of robot backstabbers don't exactly help. It's so rough that it makes the first multiple-tank segment seem like a breeze. The other super-hard parts are probably all the ones involving mega-heavies -- either rapid-fire heavies paired with rapid-fire soldiers, or ultra-heavies paired with nigh-unkillable medics, or the final supercharged normal heavies with uber medics. The mega-demoman segments aren't actually so bad, and in all of the other segments you usually just need to have some way of sustaining damage and getting ammo (buff banner horde, bowmen horde, etc.).

Joined the pub for a little bit. Now santa has to wrap some presents. Don't want it to be too late tomorrow night.

PubServ was awful tonight even when winning.

There was one guy who I'm pretty sure thought he had to stand still to cloak. He would walk forward, stop, cloak and not move again until fully cloaked.

That was however, the greatest comeback ever.

Beat Wave 666 again tonight. Madness! Got lucky with a batch of pubs -- it was a weird team comp of pyro (me), scout, soldier, demo x2, and sniper, but the demos pumped out massive damage, the buff banner was constantly going, and the streets ran... icky... with jarate and milk. We never even had a tank make it down the final ramp!

FINALLY, finished the new Mecha Engineer MVM campaign in Mann up mode. Got a new "Strange Silver Botkiller Scattergun Mk. II" for my troubles.

I like the new map, Bigrock. It's huge but you need it to be. The final wave of each map is a single insane boss. (60,000 HP - crits and self heals!)

I doubt it will do it again in Mann Up mode though.

I was going to PM a few of you TF2 gang to wish you Happy Holidays but goddamn my list of TF2 buddies is long, so I'll do it here : )

Hope all of you have a very peaceful and happy night and enjoy whatever festivities you celebrate. TF2 is a good game, but in the end, you GWJers are the reason I keep showing up. I appreciate being able to play with the lot of you (even when you kill me), and you guys are all great, even the grumpy ones

To a happy new year full of mann on hatte action!

Happy Holidays back at you Mex (et al). Mannes make TF2.

Long live the Hattes! And Mannes who wear them.

Manny happy returns friends.
