So can we have a discussion about turning off random crits? The only thing I ever see them bring is frustration. The satisfaction that I get when putting a random crocket into a group is nothing compared to the frustration of getting killed by a heavy across the map in 3 hits.

They can be funny when just messing around but when you're actually trying to play it's just irritating.

Your suggestion has been noted, and filed away in a place where all bad things go, a lock box. Let me issue a warning to anyone crazy enough to try and find it, you may think you know the location of the lock-box. Maybe you do. Or maybe that's a decoy. Or a dummy lock-box. Only the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, myself and Mex are gonna know for sure.

I tend to waver back and forth on the issue, and would like to see some of the arguments on both sides. My question is, what do random crits add to gameplay?

I am pro-random crits. It levels the playing field and sometimes makes for some awesome kills where you feel like a badass. I try not to get too worked up about being killed. It's an FPS, you're going to die a lot.

I like the standard game. I don't want us to be some elitist place where we're so good that crits take away from our awesome skills and stuff. I don't like playing with jerks like that and I don't want us to be those jerks.

I don't see how it's elitist. I hear and see people getting frustrated at getting killed by random crits all the time.
The purpose of it isn't to make the server more competitively fair or any of that crap, I don't get "worked up" about dieing I die probably more in a map then half of you do in a week. It's just frustrating when a death doesn't come from the other player being better, or you messing up but instead comes from randomly taking a billion damage.

I agree it levels the playing field, and that we have more fun for it.

I'm going to brag a bit -- I am pretty good at TF2 -- and I play a lot. I know how long I can stand and take fire, when to hide and heal, and when to die valiantly for the team. I am rarely surprised when I die outside of spies, snipers, and crits, and I would die much less were it not for random crits. I suspect many of our more experienced players are in the same situation. Given that, and assuming balanced teams, I think we'd see a lot of stalemates without random crits, which are rarely fun for either side.

So yay for dice!

I think it's a bit of a selective perception thing too. I imagine players are more likely to notice when they eat a crit sticky, compared to when they take out an enemy with one.

Anyway, I like them.

I like the unpredictable nature that crits add. I have to say I have the opposite perspective of firing/getting hit by a random crit: I get a little moment of glee when killing someone with a crit and when I'm on the receiving end I can scoff at their luck. If not for that crit, I totally would've had them. They also kind of reward good play (maybe not to the degree they used to, but you still get a better chance of crits after dealing some damage).

Informative. 15%, +10% for recent damage, maybe that's why it feels like the engie always crits with the wrench.

And this part:

Rapid-fire weapons roll for critical hits once per second, instead of every shot. If they roll a crit, the next 2 seconds worth of their fire are marked as critical hits.

explains why it feels like the Heavy has a ridiculous amount of crits. Full 2 seconds of fire, that will hurt.

We need crits or the backstab animation is f'd up. Though I would throw my support in a no-random-crits-for-Mex rule.

I never get to have crits. Maybe they should add it to the arrows!

*backstab*

I'll take it, if we can remove the Heavy's metal gloves from the game !

Bah, the gloves could be worse. Makes them a nice target for pyros, more specifically the axe.

Speaking of which, I got a name tag and I need a name for the axe. Any suggestions?

I like Random Crits. I notice when I deal them and get happy and when anyone else gets them on me I'm generally oblivious and none the wiser. I hate when I fire of a rocket at blank space and its a wasted crit though. I guess I'd rather if the crit was decided on hit and not by the projectiles but we can't change that I don't think.

Deal! Glad that's settled.

I am not a fan of random crits. I feel like I cheated when I get them and like I was cheated when someone gets them on me. However, I don't see much point in removing them. They do help even things out on occasion.

I like the random crits. Thier intention is to add random to the game to break up stalemates etc. It's fun to roll a 20, but you need to take them in stride as well.

I need a name for my shotgun. A pubbie suggested 'Your Internal Reward'.

Man, now that everyone's joining up we're gonna need to get another crop of worthwhile pubbies. :)

Do we really?

Regardless of the name, the description should be "on the plus side, the fire is out now"

Random crits are good because a lucky one in the right place can turn the tide of a battle and you feel pretty awesome if you do it.

Also, as others point out, they reward good play, while also levelling the playing field a bit. I don't think TF2 would be as fun without random crits.

Think of it this way, if you get killed by a crit you have a ready made excuse for why you died. I know I dislike dying to a non crit a whole lot more than I do to a crit.

If recent history is a guide, you should name it:

"I'm going to violate you, Grubber."

I have a couple of issues/questions about voice chat.

1. When I'm waiting to respawn, can others hear me talk? I assume so but I wasn't sure.

2. For some reason I'm having a problem that when I hit the key for voice chat in game, everything freezes for a couple seconds. It usually ends up in me getting dead. Unfortunately last night it meant Brainz almost being dead as he jumped out a second floor window into the fray expecting me to hit him with an uber. The game unfroze to me standing in a corner and Brainz yelling "goddamnit!". Sorry.

I don't know if this is an issue with my iMac, the game itself, or maybe my usb mic. I haven't been able to find much info online, but maybe I'm just not using the right search words.

Kritz are awesome. Reason one, they piss off Fedora. Do I really need another reason?

Really, it sucks when I die to a random crit. But I think it sucks every time I die, at least with the crit I have that built in excuse, like Nihilo said. Also, the feeling of getting that crit sticky and watching in land in the middle of a huge group of enemies, then watching them all explode, there is nothing like that.

If you are dead and waiting respawn, only other dead players can hear you. Live players in the field cannot. If alltalk is on, everyone can hear you at anytime.

iMac mic freezes the game for a few seconds for me as well. As a result, I do not play on my iMac anymore OR I boot the iMac into Windows to play TF2.

We should discuss if Odd Job/Arctic Commando are allowed in Goldeneye next.

Ooooo and after that Pokeballs in Smash Bros.

I'm anti all of those things in those games but for some reason I'm fine with crits in TF2. I think it's because I'm not good so I don't feel that pang of annoyance when someone clearly worse than me gets a lucky kill.

On a normal server, that doesn't have alltalk enabled, the only people who can hear you talk are your dead teammates.

I know you'd mentioned the voice-chat freeze issue before, and although I don't know what the fix is, it looks like you're not alone.
