Trichy, how are you planning on explaining the community's generosity to your nephew?

Honestly, I'm planning on explaining that people notice when you work hard and take care of your family, and a lot of generous people all over the world found out about the kind of kid he is and wanted to make a gesture. I think the best part of this is that hopefully he'll realize that the good in people outweighs the bad, and it doesn't take a lot to make a big difference in someone's life.

That's a great way of putting at it. Thanks very much for the explanation.

Only just seen this thread, apparently. I think you need to give it a better name like "KAZAMM! Awesomeness inside!!"...

Anyway, sent a little bit your way to help out.

He might be a bit too young. I'm giving my sister the final approval on what games are installed on this computer.

Yeah, I was going to send HL2 with the other games I sent but decided against an M-rated game for a 12-year-old.

Done.

We're getting close to the goal. The motherboard, processor and case are the three things left. So far, the PayPal donations are at about $250 (holy sh*t this community is incredible).

Any codemonkeys in our fine community to help the kid out with a nice start? Or is that not needed Trichy?

Fredrik_S's Binding of Isaac FTW!

I had my iPod on shuffle the other day and the opening track of that came on without me realising. The voice of the narrator alone scared my kids silly. Good times.

I wish I could gift him Journey.

lol. Didn't think that it might disturb him. I picked those games to show him that when you are making games, they don't have to be all 3d extravaganzas with massive effects and a budget of 100 million dollars. Tell him to play it with no sound.

Ah, but how are you going to explain to the generous community that you have no nephew and just wanted a sweet new rig?

What's the emoticon for a burst of smoke, a twirl of the cape, and a diabolical cackle?

Just use the emoticon for someone trying to fan away a particularly toxic fart while holding their nose. They look almost identical.

There were some great ones for a young fella on massive sales today! I sent the following:

KOTOR! - Star Wars is awesome!
Shogun 2! - I played the HELL out of Shogun 1 when I was a kid. Vanilla Shogun 2 has a ridiculous amount of content.
Dear Esther! - If he ends up trying to make games, it's nice to see some of the unique ones.

Shogun 2 was 75% off during a flash sale. I only got the main game, so if anyone sees the extra content go on sale, you might send that. I didn't even look to see if it was on sale today. Fall of the Samurai and Rise of the Samurai are both good. Probably shouldn't send the blood pack, though. It's actually not really that bad.

Frozen Synapse has been sent. I noticed I still had Bookworms Adventure in my gift inventory, so I sent that as well.

Sorry for skimming, but I'd like to donate a game. What's the best way to send it? Friend your nephew up on Steam or email to the PayPal account?

Whichever way you like. I'm running his account on Steam until we present him with the computer, so if there's something specific you have in mind, feel free to send a friend request, and I'll accept it ASAP. If you would rather, you can donate to the PayPal account.

Cool. Sent a friend request and have a game in the wings.

Also PM me your email address so I can send you a Game Maker licence key.

So unless someone finds a CPU, motherboard and case under their couch cushions, I'm going to begin shopping Newegg and Amazon in the next few days for some candidates that we can purchase with the PayPal donations. Does anyone have any suggestions for good deals in that area? I'm looking for the best bang for the community's buck.

I've been a big fan of the Antec Three Hundred case for a long time. (amz, nweg) The front USB ports are only 2.0, but it's otherwise a very well built (all steel, no flimsy aluminum and plastic here) and cost effective option. Then again, if we're picking for a 12 year old, maybe we want something more on the gaudy "cool" end of the scale?

My case vote is the windowed Corsair 300R. Pretty clean looking but the window gives it a bit of flair. I don't know if that'll end up out of budget or not. The windowed one is $90.

How many community bucks are we shopping with? Just so we know what we're working to.

Since you seem to have a little time, keep your eye on slickdeals.net. They post computer deals almost every day and you should be able to pick up a good cpu / mobo combo for pretty cheap.

We're at about $300 right now. There are members who have contacted me saying they want to donate more, but that's where the account stands.

The 12 year old in me (god that sounds so wrong reading it back) likes the look of the go faster red one with cool glowy thing on the side too.

That's what I'm thinking. Jen (my fiancee) also had the idea of putting the screen names of everyone who chipped in one way or another on the case somehow. I really like that idea.

Is it too late to change my screen name to something racy? ;)

I really have no problem listing my real name: Penis Dimpwhipple

Edit: Btw, if you accept my Steam friend request I'll send Trine his way.

When you gift it to him, take him here and show him all the cool sh*t geeks use. Then ask them to laser etch or CNC the side door. Maybe even come up with a little design contest, kind of like nose art.

If that hackerspace doesn't inspire him to be a bad ass geek, I don't know what will.
