Castle Story - Kickstarter!

Very very buggy in the prototype, not surprising since they're not at beta yet obviously. Yet, it does actually work, mostly. You can, after figuring it out, build pretty much whatever you want. It took me a few hours of tutorials + working at it to figure out how things work and what the current work arounds are, but it does work.

Last night before bed i build myself a fully enclosed lil strongroom with roof with catapult on it and bridges to unconnected islands. Today i may see about actually starting to design plans for an eventual castle grande with my better understanding of what's possible so far.

How does it compare to game like stronghold. It gives me that sort of vibe to the game.

As much as i love hte concept of stronghold, i've never found it on sale on steam real cheap and I just can't bring myself to trust it enough to pay for it:(

I've always wanted to play it and always been scared of regretting the purchase.

Tell ya what, i'll fraps me a session of it Sunday building something and post it up here:)

If you get stronghold or stronghold:crusade I assure you that you wont regret it. All the ones after that are varying degrees of meh or awful. I've put tons of time in the first one, the castle and economic building in that game is fantastic. Imagine something link anno or settlers if it actually had really good combat. Plus it's the only game I know of where archer damage is realistic. Just love that game, pick it up next time.

You sold me on finding stronghold+crusader. I'm an olympic style recurve and longbow archer and die for realistic archery in games.

edit:

And it seems steam DOES have it at a good deal:

Stronghold Legends: Lead as fantasy characters throughout history: King Arthur and the forces of Camelot, Siegfried and Dietrich in the German Ice Campaign, and unleash the fury of the forces of evil in Vlad Dracul’s Transylvania.
Updated for Windows 7 and Vista compatibility

I think I picked up that pack on sale for 10 or so a while pack. Remember what I said though only stronghold and crusader are any good, so I wouldn't spring for it right now. Although crusader extreme is not so bad in weird way.

Even better! I found a demo: http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/demos/stronghold/demo.html

Edit: Also try naming yourself Vadar.

So everyone in castle story is focused on building epic castles once they figure it out.

I was perusing the nets for castles and suddenly realized it'll all have been done before i start at this rate.

But i've just concluded watching Pillars of the Earth and End of the World about the fictional city of Kingsbridge England's Kingsbridge Cathedral which is actually really more or less the real worlds Wells Cathedral. I'm going to attempt to recreate it within the limits of the building blocks and engine of castle story.

One of the very interesting points is, i have no idea how minecraft works or doesn't work as i've never played it, but in castle story, your bricktrons have to be able to physically reach whatever it is they're doing to do it. This means structures in castle story require constructon of scaffolding if beyond basic block room sized structures being stacked. So, quite a project, but after my intial attempts succeeding in constructing bridges to alternate islands and basic structures to get the mechanics down, i dont think this is at all undoable, with taking liberties to make it work with the shaped blocks available.

Work will begin Sunday as i have family stuff tomorrow, i'll post regular videos showing my progress and success or failure:P One of the first steps is finding or creating a suitable custom map. so that i don't just have tiny land masses to work with.

So i got a decent start yesterday on working out how i'd build it and getting some basic structures started and flattening the best island i had for it.

The world editor basically doesn't work and there are no custom maps atm because of that. Saving and loading is also very difficult, a user made script fixes the save if you can successfully save but after 2 successful saves i ended up accidently nuking my save and lost my world.

The good news, i guess, is they are working on releasing a patch to the prototype to fix the utter brokenness and make it a playable prototype.

They're supposedly fixing the load speed of saves, which means fixing the saves too. Saving and loading should be much more reliable and better. Also the world editor is supposedly to work post patch properly. And a few other minor things.

Hopefully it'll be much more playable:)

Well, they patched the prototype. This is really the state they should have launched it in but honestly i think they had to have the kickstarters test it for them cause a studio of 3 guys....just not gonna be a good use of their time generating the bug list the community could as fast as they could....

Anyhow, the patch is huge in terms of the fix and change list.

Already folks are uploading custom maps now so that whole world editor thing is fixed along with supposedly most of the saving loading issues and tons of other bugs and stuff.

I'm gonna be digging in today see how it goes, looks really really promising now as a prototype, can't wait for beta.

For those that like me didn't get in on the Kickstarter, it looks like they will be opening up pre-orders at some point in the near term. You won't get this prototype/alpha but you can get in on the beta.

Someone apparently had a very similar build idea to me...and managed to do it pre patch i guess without corrupting their saves like i did.

Still gonna build my own on a custom map with more structures around, but this is a very cool build and it shows a lot of interim scaffolding etc required for the build.

Scroll down to the post titled The Brickitron Cathedral.

My start yesterday on building a custom island city.

Today's progress:

I couldn't figure out the catapult, so i looked up a guide, very handy:

Also, hight advantage is extremely useful for archers, i messed around dropping in corruptions to see how far archers could hit them....i think my fort on a hill is nearly invincible lol...boy can they fire far from that height.

I had taken a lil break i guess, anyhow, was back at it today, having fun progressin my build.

Short vid of progress, completed a nifty bridge and catapult platform as well as progress on the cathedral. I swear there's as many blocks in my foundation for the cathedral as in my entire fort.

Per this weekends blog, a lot of changes are happening in the way they do things. Also, since it's taking so long once they implement a few key features into the prototype and make sure it's stable, everybody who was to have beta access will now get the prototype.

ooo, a prototype update!

I stopped work on my island a lil while back cause i was tired of the bugs i was having to make lots of extra steps to work around and around over and over again....

I'll go read up and see if there's an update for me yet.

Ok, so lots of nice updates actually beyond just a new prototype fixing to release (not quite out yet).

They're going to provide steam keys through their humble store (humblebundle.com) distributor. Apparently Humble Store does this via a good deal with steam they have going for a lot of their releases. That's great news, so we'll be able to get a steam key, DL the game via steam, and let steam auto update it. woohoo!

And everyone, as mentioned above will get the prototype, but i don't think you have it yet, i think everyone's getting the new version of it fixing to release.

They're also fixing to release a new improved website on castlestory.net and re-open the ability to sign up for the game/pre-order, and get in on beta action.

Check your email inbox:

We're thrilled to announce that beta backers should now have access not only to their steam keys, but also to the last version of the prototype! Remember, this version of the prototype is only available to our backers.

Between this, finishing up Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, just getting gifted XCOM, and the big milestone dropping for Firefall on Friday, I've got a lot of gaming goodness to eat up all of a sudden. Hoping to at least take a quick tour through what this game has to offer. But since it's still fairly early, I'm not gonna stress over not putting much time in.

successfully redeemed it on steam...cool beans.

Is there any way to donate/buy/contribute to this project now. I suddenly have a taste for these games - Towns, Timber & Stone and would like to play this one... Any thoughts?

Yeah, I just did the other day as well. We have to wait for the beta release to get access though. I'd recommend Gnomoria as well, although it's much more Dwarf Fortress like, it's also only $8 on Steam.

$20 preorder link is on the game page: http://castlestory.net/

And done.

Dammit, missed the kickstarter. Preordered from what I saw at PAZ. Want Beta now. *whine*

On the amusing-only-to-me side, I appear (wearing the orange check shirt) in their pax pictures: http://sauropodstudio-wordpress.s3.a...

so why no new comments since April? Is there a new thread for this game? Its available and would love to know what folks think of it.

I got an email yesterday that they released a new version of the prerelease game. I've not tried it yet.

The last alpha I played was pretty lousy. I haven't gotten any recent emails about updates, though.

It went onto Steam Early Access a few days ago. I wasn't an alpha backer and I haven't gotten a chance to check out this latest beta.

Malor wrote:

This to the point I said I likely will not bother until it's nearly complete.

It's improved a lot, and i just another update like yesterday, but i havn't gotten back into it yet either just cause of how many games i'm into atm.
