Peter Jackson directs "The Hobbit"

I'm going to go ahead and call it now: the next Avengers movie is a two-parter.

I was about to joke that the next Avengers movie will a multi-part with each film following an individual character, but then—

Isn't the existing Avengers movie in spirit a five-parter? Iron Man + Thor + Captain America + The Incredible Hulk + The Avengers? (Did I miss anything?)

Iron Man 2.

Next Bond movie is a two-parter too.

Ok, why is Galadriel giving me the middle finger? I recycle! Usually.

Yeah, it's already a gargantuan, rapacious, many-tentacled franchise beast. I guess they could make it more of one, but they may fear it will crush itself under its own weight.

Out of curiosity, how many people actually want to see this in high frame rate 3D?

Nope.

New character posters here.

(Edit: Can't hotlink the images. Dead link removed.)

I'm fine with just two dimensions, thank you.

Saw the preview in IMAX before Cloud Atlas and I couldn't help but grin through the whole thing.

I'm excited but is it just me or do the dwarves look an awful lot like the Klingons from ST:TNG?

Little known or seen midget klingons. Which if you think about the klingon culture they would have to be very deadly to survive.

.. and my Batleth!

I would watch that.

Elrond definitely had a Vulcan thing going on too, beyond just the ears. And Legolas is even hotter than Sela.

Time to post this again, then:

Ummm, this is pretty horrifying.

I'm still not certain what the conditions off set were that led to animals dying. Then again, I haven't really kept touch because, well, I eat animals. There's only so much I care about their deaths.

Though if some of that is true (forcing an animal to "work" with a broken back) that's just f*cked up.

New! My personal favorite since part of it is m profession. It's personally great to see that they are using Maya. Job security!

Hear hear! I owe my livelihood to Jackson's LOTR, without it I would'nt have gotten into maya when I did.

Rolling Stone has an article about the soundtrack, including an in-browser player to listen to all 26 tracks.

I am starting to wonder if this "soap opera" effect everyone is talking about will effect me. Since I play PC games I usually am around 60FPS.

Coincidentally, I have a doctor's appointment that will require me to leave work at 10:00am on Friday, Dec. 14th and will be absent for approximately the same amount of time as the Hobbit will be airing on the IMAX 3D screen at my local theater.

me too!

A 13 minute featurette.

So close now!

Just came back from watching this. Decided to give myself a Christmas treat and went for the special showing with power recline seats, no blocked views and dinner using New Zealand ingredients with New Zealand wine. Was shown in normal 2D. Decided to save the high-frame 3D for the second viewing.

Went in with some expectations, being a fan of Jackson's LOTR movies, and they all were completely met. The feeling of coming back to Middle Earth really felt complete; it was like visiting old friends (and surprising you along the way) and making new ones.

And of the new ones, Thorin Oakenshield is the most impressive. And I love the version of Radagast the Brown that appears here, even though it doesn't follow the book. Sylvester McCoy was prefect as a wizard.

And of course Martin Freeman is fantastic as Bilbo, short of de-aging Ian Holm. All the scenes from the meeting between Gollum and Biblo was pitch perfect.

Wait, so the 2-D version does not have the higher framerate? Or are there more than two versions of this movie floating around?
