League of Legends Game Nights/Season 2 League

IMHO: the best thing you can do here is try to keep the lower level players interested and not overwhelmed. The more experienced players will take care of themselves, but I'm the most concerned about the newer guys. From my own experience (as a much less-experienced player than most involved) with the DoW2 tourney attempts over the last couple of years, I felt overwhelmed and intimidated and it was a pretty bad experience for me.

NSMike: Sorry you've gotten discouraged with this. I'm curious what sort of format you'd like to see that'd keep you interested and not feeling like you don't belong. Any thoughts?

Everyone else stands still for the first 20 minutes so I can earn enough gold to buy my way into viability?

Really, I'm not constrained by the format of this. I'm just not up to par. More often than not, I'm frustrated within the first ten minutes of any given match. Not only do I not grasp how to play most champions, I have no idea how the strategy works, or where to go when. And I honestly don't like the game well enough to bother learning. I'm certainly nowhere near ready to run with folks like you guys. Monday proved that to me. So GLHF, but I'm out.

For Friday, let's try separate vent channels. If we end up with 10 people that can do draft mode, let's do it. If we have lower level players, blind pick works just fine. This shouldn't be a dramatic event. It 4 FUN!

4 fun? Fedora promised me 5 fun.

I'm in it for revenge! That means you dyni!

For nsmike, I say stay in it, if we do separate channels we can coach you better.

And the new vs new only works when we have ay least two new people.

NSMike wrote:

Say no more. At least you gave it a shot.

Whatever happens, I propose we keep these scheduled nights. It was nice logging in on Tuesday and being able to play 2-3 matches with Goodjers and not logging on at some random time hoping that maybe possibly someone wants to make a custom.

count me in for regularly scheduled gwj stuff, even if it's not the tourney stuff originally envisioned.

League is always fun. The more the merrier!

I'm not level 30 and I'll require no less than 7 months to get there. I don't bring much to any team I'm on other than feeding the opponents. I'm fine with not playing. I'm pretty sure I can convince everyone of these facts were I to show up on Friday.

I'm worse than you are but my team was pretty ready to help me out.

NSMike, if you feel up for some noob-on-noob (or coop vs AI) action to communally increase our skill and/or just goof off and have fun learning some heroes, let me know.

Oh sweet, glad you guys play a few games. 5pm start time is pretty rough for west coasters =P

Yeah, I was hoping that west costers would be getting off work around that time so they could pop in a game or two into the night. I think both Friday and Monday we played for a good 4 hours so don't worry about not getting there as we start, if you come in for a later game you can grab an open spot or I'm sure somebody who's already played wouldn't mind sitting out.

why don't we just drop the whole points system? it really doesn't work and i don't think it will begin to work.

for instance, the last two times i've tried to join on a "points night", i never got an invite. this was despite posting in the GWJ LoL chat AND asking for invite in Vent. Whoever makes the games (Fedora most of the time I guess) just spams invites out to everyone and there is never any discussion on who should be playing. if we have more than 10 guys on (which we have had recently), then we need people to sit out every other game so everyone gets a shot to play. there is no "i got next" system in place.

if the game owner spams invites and the room fills up while he is spamming, then he'll just stop spamming. hence no invite for some people.

this is especially frustrating since we're not tracking games played vs. wins. i have a feeling i will never get in enough games to get enough wins to get into the top 10. if i play 20 games and win 15, i will lose out to someone who plays 30 and wins 16. this will happen.

anyway, this is getting long. LET'S JUST DO GAME NIGHTS! i've never seen more Goodjers on at the same time as i have recently.

also, LET'S ALWAYS USE SEPARATE VENT CHANNELS. i think the best thing we can hope to achieve with our game nights is teach new LoL Goodjers. this is best done with separate channels because there is no fear of revealing strategy. also, separate channels is less chaotic and you can actually manage to talk with someone and explain stuff without someone screaming in your ear about some nonsense. longterm, this will help our community and foster more competition and better attendance.

i still think it would be cool to eventually do a tournament with 4+ teams, but that can be down the road.

Hm, I'm sorry I must not of heard you. Did you say something like "I haven't played tonight, can I get an invite"?
Honestly, that must've been me not paying attention. I'll try to be more attentive next time when it comes to invites. For sure my fault there.

As for dropping the point system, like I said before I'm not going to do that until we've at least played through at least one league. People are welcome to ignore it or not take part in it but I'm too stubborn to just drop it without finishing.

fair enough. it's not your fault, it's just that there is no "i got next" system in place. so there is no way to know who should play and who shouldn't.

if you're going to continue, then at least have a column for losses, too.

Also, is there any plan for cases of more than 10 that is enough for a 5 man team or another 5vs5?

/tagging for mirth and jollity

I could add a waiting to play or a check in list on the spreadsheet for each night. So at the end of games we can look at that and see who has played and who is waiting to play.

i think a Losses column accomplishes that. we need to know how many games each person has played for 2 reasons. 1: i think it will be informative for the final tally to know exactly how someone got their wins. 2: if it comes to 2 people waiting for 1 spot for a game, the spot should go to the person with less games played.

in addition to that, people should also be more aware of others waiting. if you've just played a game, be prepared to sit one out. doesnt mean you have to, but maybe ask if you should. also, if 10 people have just played and only 4 are waiting, which 6 stay on? the 6 with the least amount of games played!

Or just ask in the chat room. I was online last night and asked a couple times for matches but no one replied. Was sitting in vent and I'd hear notifications that people were joining but no Hellos. I'm just going to play to play I guess.

Or add a GWJQueue chat room and those people get first dibs on invites.

While I would like to subscribe to your newsletter, is that not what the GWJ channel is for? Unless people are diligent with joining/leaving the GWJQueue channel, it will be no different than the GWJ channel. Or are you implying a GWJ League Tourney channel? In which case I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Bad news guys, I can play tonight. But I haven't played in a few days so my apology goes double for my teammates.

I would like to say, if your going to be waiting for a game in that channel, actually sit there and wait. If you get an invite and you dont respond in a minute or two, the game organizer might move on and invite someone else. I know that we have a few people who sit in the GWJ channel but never accept any invites because most of the time they are just not there.

Maybe I'll dodge tonight for TF2 then. :p

Man I hate swing shift, I have to choose which game night to participate in, since I work on all the other game nights.

It is, true. However, the people involved in the active game will already be in there. Thus, if we made a new room just for people waiting to hop into games, those people would get priority.

Or (and this is a much better idea), we have 3 vent channels: Lobby, team A, team B and we organize from the lobby every time.

But one thing: If you want into a game, be available in the lobby so we aren't waiting 20 minutes in between games.

I'm so confused. What happened to just logging in and playing games?

rabbit wrote:

Good news, Rabbit, you can still do that!

This is pretty much just that, but so far it's resulted in nearly guaranteed 5v5 inhouse games at scheduled times. Even without the points part, that's pretty rad. Join us!

Nothing happened to that. I don't understand your confusion.

How about if somebody hasn't played yet they just put that in their vent comment. That way there's no hassle with special chat channels or docs.

Genius. It's almost like this guy has organized conventions. Get on over to that lobby after the match rather than jabbering away in one of the team channels.
