The e-mail I got says it's not starting until 2015. Giving me a full 12 months notice since mine just renewed.
Price hike takes effect in the middle of next month, so if your renewal is after that (say, June) then expect the higher price.
Yep, According to this article:
The critical cut-off date is April 17. If your renewal comes up before then, you'll still pay the original $79 fee. If comes up on April 17 or after, you're stuck with the higher fee.
FYI: Prime rates will be raised to $99 a year.
This site has a widget to see if Prime is worth it (for you) based on shipping alone.
Totally still worth it for me. I just renewed so it'll be a while before the rate hike kicks in.
I guess we now know where all that extra money from the Prime rate increase is going...
HBO strikes deal with Amazon to stream shows
Amazon Prime customers will have access to the HBO programming on May 21, but most of it will first be older shows such as "The Sopranos" and "The Wire," or a smattering of earlier seasons from current series such as "True Blood."HBO said episodes of shows such as "Girls," "The Newsroom" and "Veep" will be not be available until three years after it shows them.
Holy. S***.
I wonder how many dollars this cost Amazon. I'm guessing that it was all the dollars.
Three years seems like an awful long time.

Gotta milk that sweet, sweet DVD revenue.
It's cool, because you can just spend those three years re-watching The Wire.
I thought the quoted cost for this kind of thing was $20/month per customer. Even with Prime going up, it doesn't hit that mark. I think HBO just didn't like Netflix, or Amazon paid a lot more cash behind the scenes.
I haven't watched it but I hear Orphan Black is really good.
Considering I haven't seen the Wire, Deadwood, or any of Boardwalk Empire, and that my friend whose HBOGo account I was borrowing until he recently cancelled it (right before GoT season premiere, too! ), I am okay with the 3 year lag. For now, at least.

I watched it over the weekend. It's pretty good. The plot is entertaining. The acting by the lead is stellar which does carry the show a bit.

Amazon offers them a direct connection to buying their DVDs. I imagine that had to be more appealing to them than Netflix.

This doesn't seem as big as the headline might suggest. Really, anything that you want to watch (that you haven't had many chances to do already), won't be included in the deal.

A little from column A, and probably a little from column B.
The Wire!
Been meaning to watch that one forever.

See.
I've only ever seen season 1 of The Wire. Would watch the rest if it pops up on Amazon.

You're in for a treat! I only watched through about season 2 of the Sopranos, so I'm looking forward to watching the rest!
Some old HBO shows is better than no HBO shows at all, but I'm still disappointed.

Well I already have HBO so this doesn't really affect me.

Don't be; it's the beginning of the end. With enough numbers, HBO will finally pander to the cord cutters. They have to; it'll later than sooner, but it's beginning to happen.
I finished watching Veronica Mars a week or two ago. Can't remember. Anyway, it is a fantastic show. The quality dips with every season, but it remains consistently good.
WooHoo! HBO content is now available. It hadn't clicked with me that Band of Brothers and The Pacific would be included in this. Good stuff!
Nice. I'm all over this tonight.
Finally I can watch The Wire.
Finally I can watch The Wire.

The Wire is great.
