Hidden Gems of Amazon Prime instant videos

I thought it kinda sucked...

I thought was a middling sci-fi movie that was worth it just on account of a mostly female (and very good) cast.

The ending was dumber than a bag of rocks, though.

I loved everything about it. It'd make my fave five for 2018 for sure. It also rewards multiple viewings, because the visuals are so dense, and there is a quite a bit of nonverbal communication between the women.

That and the differences between the second and first expedition are very interesting.
I also loved the ending

Spoiler:

One of the few films attempting to show something explicitly beyond human experience and IMO it does that well. It's not supposed to be something that makes sense because then you would have an alien brain.

Yep, easily one of the best movies I saw last year. Need to rewatch soon.

For people who have already watched Annihilation, the excellent YouTube channel Lessons from the Screenplay has a discussion of Annihilation here.

Do you want to watch a very silly film about silly martians killing silly humans?

Mars Attacks?

YES. Unquestionably.

Best accidental alien killing weapon ever devised for any sci-fi film.

Plus Jack Nicholson plays the US President.

I think that'll also be the subject of a Blank Check episode within the next week or two, since they're going down Tim Burton's movies.

Annihilation was okay sci-fi fare, but legit had one of the creepiest, eeriest scenes in a movie ever. I'll always think of that scene when I think of Annihilation.

Spoiler:

Bear

Yeah. Holy f*cking sh*t yeah.

The imagery in Annihilation alone makes it worth watching. Its one of the most interesting looking movies I've seen in years.

It's no SuperHot.....

Correct. It's better.

That animal it is not. That animal would be scared of whatever that s**t is.

Episode one of Hanna is up for 24 hours. I wish they just dropped the whole season but it looks good to me.

My wife and I have been working our way through Corner Gas. A nice little feel good Canadian sitcom if you are looking for something easy watching and fun.

The ABC Murders is a pretty good Agatha Christie adaptation. It's a quick three episode mini-series, so the investment isn't too high.

John Malkovich plays a Hercule Poirot haunted by his past. It also stars the dad from Broadchurch and Ron Weasley, who I completely didn't recognize at the time.

Agreed, the show is comfort food. Enjoying it immensely.

Just watched Eighth Grade, and it is so good. One of those movies that just keeps getting better as it goes. And although I am not a thirteen year old girl, it struck me as very authentic. Some spoilery bits:

Moderator: How many times has somebody come up to you and told you that this movie was “Pure Gucci”?

Bo Burnham: I mean, I still don’t get what Gucci means. It was something Elsie said on set. I would be like, “What’s up Elsie?”, and she’d be like, “I’m Gucci”, and I’d be like, “What?!” And then I started doing it to embarrass her, and it got so banal at certain points that crew members would ask, “Is this Gucci or not?” We recorded the [YouTube] videos the last couple of days of the shoot, and so I thought it should be her sign off. She literally has the last word of the film, which I really like, and I got her a Gucci watch. The wrap gifts would’ve been a lot cheaper if she said, “Kohls”… She was playing the long game.

And here is Bo Burnham in an appearance on Late Night explaining why being 13 is horrible and wonderful at the same time.

Man, I am really liking Patriot. I can't watch it for very long, because I just get too nervous for the main character, but it is incredibly good. The direction is great, and every actor is pitch perfect. Michael Dorman in particular should have been up for awards on this one.

I loved Patriot, looking forward to more. Lots of really unexpected humor and a great story. I enjoy seeing Luxembourg and Paris too as settings. Seeing the contrast between those beautiful cities and some industrial park in Milwaukee is interesting too. I think the writers generally don't care for the US, at least by comparison.

The not-leaked version. All 10 episodes will drop at once.

New season of The Tick!

Hanna is pretty good. I havent finished it yet, but so far it's intriguing.
