Hidden Gems of Amazon Prime instant videos

My wife surprised me by watching the trailer and expressing interest in the show. We just finished the first season last night.

It was very hard for me to NOT explain everything as it happens. I did slip up a few times, like when I mentioned the pipboy can work as a flashlight ("those are the things they wear on their wrists?"), or that

Spoiler:

the dog has a name

but I didn't know if the show would use it (they did).

My wife does not play video games but seemed eager for season 2.

I need to know if the level of gore is going to continue after episode 2. Because if there are any more exploded limbs, I’m not going to make it.

I kind of wish there was a PG 13 edit because I love everything about the show except for the explicit, revolting violence.

I am also not a fan of dogs getting fridged just to demonstrate how evil someone is. I don’t care that he revived it later with a stimpack. I can’t handle even pretend violence against a pet.

It does, and there are.

Yes, everyone seems to have taken Bloody Mess as their first perk.

Oh well.

To be fair, that is staying true to the source material.

I'm on my second viewing and I'm amazed at the details I missed. The grills were exactly like in the game. There was an Assaultron in the sand. I'm excited to see what else I missed.

FWIW, I canceled Prime the day the ads went live. I am trying to de-Amazon my life in general as they are a terrible company with a terrible owner. These days I try to draw the line at books only and it kind of sucks because there are some things that you can really only get there because they have driven everyone else out.

Don't know what types of books you're looking for but Powell's is still holding fast, seems to have everything AMZN does.

I was enjoying Fallout in an ‘it’s surprisingly well done!’ kind of a way then the last episodes came along and delivered some wonderful dark humour and several pitch perfect nods to the experience of playing the games.

Spoiler:

Amongst others, I’m thinking of the two severed heads ‘kissing’ as the protagonists kissed and the ping and thumbs up from the pip-boy as it cheerfully told Lucy that she’d arrived at her destination.

The resolution of the story, whilst being predictable in some ways, also took me by surprise with certain details and the over all level of grimness. It’s reminded me of how good and how dark some of the writing in the games is.

Over all they did an astonishingly good job with the show and can’t wait for season 2.

Loved Fallout S1, started playing 76 by the show's inertia and I'm enjoying it quite a lot, much more than I expected.

I started it back up too, after about a year and a half away.
There are so many brand new players that it occasionally makes some of the nuke events hard to finish because the there aren't always enough high level participants that can put out the dps required to kill the boss in time.

I’ve been toying with the idea of playing Fallout again, but I’m stuck on which one. Fallout 76 seems interesting and it’s the only one I haven’t played- but I just can’t get past the fact it’s forced multiplayer. I want my single player experience in a Fallout game. So I’ll probably pick between Fallout 4 or New Vegas.

In the meantime, I’m two episodes into my first rewatch and enjoying experiencing everything again.

The multiplayer aspect is a bit overstated- there’s a cap of like two dozen players per map and the map is so huge you rarely encounter anyone outside of timed events and endgame content. You can also see where all players are on the map so you can actively avoid people as well.
If you subscribe you can also access a private invite-only server.

I couldn't go back to 4 after 76, it just does enough things better that trying to play 4 again felt like too big a step backwards. 76 still plays very much like a single player Fallout. The max population for a server is 24 people, and you never have to join a group for any of the story content. Most people only join a group for the stat boost you get from being in one, and don't actually play or explore with any of the other members. About the only time you'll really do any group activity is if you go to the public events, but you don't actually have to be in a party to participate and can show up solo without it being detrimental. PVP can be mostly turned off so you don't accidentally get onto a fight, challanges to workshop ownership are the only thing that can't be turned off entirely, but they do not happen often at all, and if you're not near the workshop when it happens then you can just let the challenger claim it and not have to fight at all.

I'm playing it as if it were a single player game, and it really feels like it, as long as you set your avatar to "peaceful" mode, no one will be able to sour your experience. There are pop-ups and announcements that remind you of the game's multiplayer aspect, but you can choose to ignore that and focus on the game's main plot, or just wander around tackling whatever mission you stumble upon. The atmosphere is there, the world is as Fallout-y as it can be.

Edit: as if it "were"?

Is there a way to play Fallout 76 in a pure single player mode? I very much do not want to ever encounter another human being while playing.

There might be a way to set up a private session. I haven't really played since launch so I can't remember.

Oh wait, I still have it installed...

OK, so there's a "Private Adventure" that you can set up for you and up to 7 friends. It requires you to be a subscriber though. Looks like that's on sale for $6.50 this month, and they're advertising some kind of free trial for it. That seems reasonable if you want to host a private map for a specific group of friends, but if you want pure single player that's a bit much.

Huh, the Steam store is saying the base game costs $40. I thought they'd made it free to play and were making money off microtransactions and expansions like Pittsburg and Atlantic City.

I really enjoyed Fallout 76. It's what got me into the franchise; turns out I needed the nice wooded hills to take the edge off all the ruined buildings. But if you're already into the franchise and just want a single-player experience, you're probably better off with 4+mods.

"Were" is correct, and congratulations on knowing the subjunctive tense better than 90% of Americans.

It's been given away a couple of times. The expansions have all been free, but the base game never went FreeToPlay. Private Adventure isn't available with the trial, you have to actually buy a month of First to access it.

I can't overstate enough how passive the multiplayer aspect of it is and how easy it is to play it functionally solo. If you're worried about getting griefed or pk'd, don't be.

The expansions are free?

Ah, looks like I was confusing the corresponding cosmetics bundles with access to the expansions themselves.

I really should fire the game up again sometime. I never did go back and see how adding NPCs affected the experience.

I played Fallout 76 as singleplayer. In general, you don't need to interact much with other players. The big exception is the server events, which are mostly optional. But the endgame of Fallout 76 is replaying those same server events over and over.

I clicked the little icon on Twitch to make the number go away, and saw that they're giving away Fallout 76 right now on Prime Gaming. Which you probably have if you're interested in this thread.

I'm trying to figure what type of handgun The Ghoul uses but I'm not getting it.

So my wife comes up to me all abuzz. "We have to watch this show! Its called Fallout and it is based on a video game." (Really? How can this possibly be?)

So we watched the first episode and loved it. I got passed the place where I stopped on my own viewing and found that they handled the slaughter much better than I expected.

The crazy thing is how many little chuckles I got from all of the "situational" easter eggs. There were just so many "I've been there in the game" moments.

And big time kudos to the actors. Especially: Chet, Lucy, Norm (the bully from Ender's Game), Lucy's pregnant blonde friend, Maximus and Dane in the brotherhood and the incredible Leslie Uggams. (oh and the villain, talk about a bad mama jama...)

Yeah, I just finished episode 8 of Fallout last night and loved it from start to finish. Perfect casting all around, and just chock-full of easter eggs, references, and sly nods. The violence was brutal, as one would expect, but it also wasn't a complete gorefest from start to finish. I appreciated that by the end of season 1 they did end up answering a good number of questions I was wondering about earlier, and that it did tee up perfectly for a second season.

All these people jumping on the Fallout franchise's bandwagon only to find out that the PC ports of 3, New Vegas, and 4 are garbage.

New Vegas isn’t bad with all the stability mods installed. Hasn’t crashed once on me since I installed them. Before that I had dropped it entirely because it had failed my three crashes rule for PC games.

Downside is that it took me something like 3 hours to get all the necessary mods installed.

I had zero issues with Fallout 4 on PC when i played.

It's a very revisionist choice to call them PC ports when they were all primarily meant to be played on PC.

Also Fallout 4 is supposed to get a new update tomorrow with "widescreen and ultra-widescreen support, as well as fixes to Creation Kit and a variety of quest updates."
