Hidden Gems of Amazon Prime instant videos

Pages

To mimic the HGoNetflix thread, this is to post movies/shows worth watching on Amazon Prime, specifically the free ones.

To begin: The Iron Giant, Where Eagles Dare, and The Adventures of Tin Tin

Generally pickings seems to be slimmer here than on Netflix, but if you've got a Prime membership anyway for the shipping, then hey, free movies, right?

I haven't seen the others, but The Iron Giant is awesome.

Brad Bird. 'Nuff said.

Ronin. It's a legitimately good movie.

i have amazon prime, but i rarely use amazon streaming as it's too difficult to search through their PS3 app to find something free to watch. Is filter switch somewhere in the app or on their website to view just free stuff?

Amazon.com -> Shop By Department (top left) -> Unlimited Instant Videos -> Prime Instant Videos

You can also browse Prime Instant View movies in the PS3 app, though I'm not sure if you can filter your search to just the free ones.

Anyone use this on the 360? How do you rate it?

Excellent car chases.

The PS3 app has been updated 3 or 4 times since it debuted. There's a lot more in the search now as well as more categories to drill down. I've had good luck finding things the last few weeks.

Excellent. I'll celebrate this by watching Almost Heroes (a terrible Chris Farley movie and the last one he made).

edit: Dirty Work might of been his last, can't remember which came out first.

One thing you could do would be to add free stuff to the watchlist and just look there on the PS3? Not sure if that's available there or not, but it's an easy way to make stuff easy to find on roku or the kindle fire.

Saw this in the theatre when it first came out...still one of my favorites.

Ronin's on Netflix as well.

One film that isn't, though, is Pootie Tang.

Works as well as Netflix does. The interface is a bit clunky (just like Netflix), but there you go.

In case Amazon didn't throw you an email letting you know West Wing is on Prime, well, it is.

There goes the next several hours days weeks.

Likewise, the first three seasons of Fringe are up. No other streaming service has them, and they've gotten me very close to signing up.

Ah I've been itching for a rewatch this summer, in preparation for the final season.

Nice! I've been an AP member for a couple of years now and this will be the first show that Netflix didn't have that I actually want to watch!

I don't know how to do the linky stuff, but I would submit the following:

Tucker & Dale vs Evil

its gory (not overly realistic, more campy gore) and is really a good send up of the slasher movies of the late 80's / early 90's. Its got Alan Tyduk of Firefly/Dollhouse fame doing his normal excellent acting and its just a good fun movie.

I'd also recommend:

13 Assassins

Finally, I had to watch this one:

Hobo With a Shotgun

Its so horribly campy its good (sort of). It's also got a fair amount of gore, of course the over the top kind like Saw, but at least enough tongue in cheek that it's not too revolting like Saw and Hostel can be (and their progeny).

I started using the PS3, but got a Roku HD2 for $60.00 and its much nicer to use for this. Have watched some other stuff as well, but nothing that springs to mind that I'd recommend.

Hobo With a Shotgun is ridiculously gory.

In "About Damn Time" news, the Instant Video app is finally out for the ipad.

I've found that Amazon Instant Video also has a bunch of classic Doctor Who series free for Prime. Time to catch up!

Do not tell my wife this. Do not tell my wife this.

Unfortunately they aren't the entire seasons, as a lot of episodes were lost to TV affiliates that would re-air the reels then trash them (no one cared about preserving film reels of TV shows back then). So for instance, season 1 has only 4 episodes, but at least they're all part of a 4 part story arc. Still, it'll be nice to see some of the old series.

I've consumed a few more and have a couple to share:

"The Innkeepers" - a 2011 ghost story movie that is a "slow burn" with a decent payoff and an ending that allows for discussion of "what really happened"

"God Bless America" - a movie written and directed by Bobcat Goldwaith (yes, THAT Bobcat). It is a very good dark comedy about the ills of today's reality tv and "those darn kids today".

I've also been making my way through Red Dwarf. No idea why, as I have the DVD's sitting on my shelf up to the "Back to Earth" 3 episode special of a couple years ago.

Well true that some of them are missing because of this, the Amazon seasons also fail to include many episodes that do still exist. Like the very first serial.

As an aside, I think audio has been recovered for all of the 106 episodes that are still missing.

Yes, a movie by

Good stuff.

I have a ton of stuff in my Watchlist now, mostly after a visit from my cousin. A few popular shows I remember hearing about before, and some stuff I just never got around to.

Doctor Who first off, which I'm into the 2nd new season of, and have talked about in that thread.

Arrested Development, which we watched 3-4 episodes of while he was visiting and it's hilarious. Looking forward to more.

Dead Like Me, which the wife vaguely remembers watching and I remember her and others talking about it a few years back.

And several others which I've heard are good and been told to watch by multiple people: Pushing Daisies, The West Wing, Downton Abbey, Friday Night Lights, and Farscape.

And a couple others that I remember but might like to check out again since I haven't seen them in years: Alf, Roswell, 21 Jump Street, Fraggle Rock, Chapelle Show, and the X-Files.

And they also have HD versions of The Best of I Love Lucy and the original Twilight Zone. I know there's some of those episodes I've seen through the years that I would love to watch again in HD.

Suffice to say I'm full up on TV to watch, and there's a slew of my favorite tv shows returning to prime time around Sept 24, so I'm never going to watch it all at this point.

And watching Doctor Who has me curious about Torchwood, and the Sarah Jane Adventures, both of which are available free. Any advice on those or should I ask in the Doctor thread?

Never watched the Sara Jane stuff, but Torchwood was pretty good. Especially if you like Captain jack. Not as good as Doctor Who overall, still fun for the most part, but pretty campy as well. Think "Chris Eccleston's Series" level of camp.

Although I still haven't seen the Torchwood season set in the US. I don't think anyone has that on Instant streaming, do they? I think it's series 4 or 5...?
