Torchlight 2 Catch-All

Not sure what happened but my girlfriend and I played this in the past over LAN with no problems. Yesterday we couldn't see eachothers games no matter what we tried. We ended up making Runic accounts and played on the internet mode for about 30 minutes until her comp crashed. After, that the runic authentication servers would not let her back in. I then logged out to test and I couldn't get back in either. The error message was something along the lines of "Could not authenticate with servers". It was a very frustrating experience.

For the LAN mode we made sure we were in the same workgroup, firewalls off, and even disabled all network adapters that weren't currently in use. I have no idea why it wasn't working.

Were you both patched to the same version of the game? I had issues seeing friends' games when someone hadn't let Steam update them yet.

I think so, but not positive. We both have the Steam version and I couldn't find a way to manually check for updates.

Been playin this since early in the winter sale, using the synergies mod that some others are using and played it both multiplayer with them and single player quite a bit so far.

Really enjoying it. The experience with synergies mod si really nice on veteran difficulty.

Can't recommend synergies enough to add more to the vanilla game that just makes it more exciting and less ... boring.

So: Synergies from the get-go, or vanilla playthrough first?

I'm going synergies from the get go. It's the same game, only with more stuff, and more challenging on veteran/elite. I'm playing veteran.

I get the impression a vanilla playthrough first would bore me to tears and i wouldn't want to do synergies then.

EDIT: also playing with remastered mod. Improves the game 100 fold imho.

I would like to get in on the Steam group as well.

Holy cow did they do some good things with this game. Tonight was the first time I really played it. Now, granted, I've got Synergies installed, so I don't know what that does in comparison to the vanilla game, but it's the fun that Diablo should have been. Items are interesting from about level 3 on! There are loads of different bad guys that all do different things! Greens and Blues (and even Oranges) drop early and often! It's like Diablo2 + Fate + Median XL.

Double thumbs up; I'm kind of glad I hadn't played before, because now I'm experiencing it for the first time.

Is there a good resource/page covering some basic builds? I find the talent tree structures and descriptions quite confusing. Have the Outlander, Mage and Berserker on level 11 now. I like how they made them feel so unique.

Also, is there in internal CD to the "x% health on crit" of the Berserker? I swear that during frenzy or double crits half of the crits don't return HP.

I get a good amount of information here but as far as builds and such go, I generally like to figure that out myself. A little google-fu should help you find some decent builds. Good luck!

I don't care so much about a build but about which powers are good/bad. There's been some talk in this thread about which powers people prefer for certain classes.

I'd say pick skills that feel nice. The game isn't a cake walk, but it's not super diffcult either, so you can more or less what you want. I'm a fan of passives over actives.

Yeah. If you are going like hard-mode, the builds can be handy... but normal difficulty, you can experiment a bit without trouble.

I am playing on Veteran and google-fu has yielded that the Runic Games forums actually have a bunch of decent guides and pointers.

Now the next problem: how do I play with other GWJers or friends? Importing my Steam friends into the Runic account didn't work.

You need to give it like 1hour for it to update everything.

Or else, hamachi or a virtual Lan could do the job.

It should work. There were a lot of issues at launch. But by now it should be working smoothly. I think the instructions say it could take up to 24 hours but it shouldn't be that long.

Mine took like a week back when it was new.

remember to check synergiesmod.com daily for updates before you start your session if you're using synergies.

Development is progressing very rapidly and smoothly on many fronts with it, and check the patch notes.

Most of the synergies added stuff is now moved to it's own town you can access instead of having it divvied up all over the place in terms of synergies specific merchants and stuff.

And yea, you find a lot more interesting mobs and fights as you play through in syngergies than in vanilla, vanilla is very vanilla on the battlefield comparatively.

Also some synergies merchants sell respec potions, so don't be afraid to experiment unlike vanilla.

Also, the necromancer class is unique to the synergies mod and in constant development with every patch.

I installed both of these mods on your recommendation and WOW! They make a huge difference - I loved the game before but now I am starting a new game with each class on Veteran - SO. MUCH. FUN. I am not prone to hyperbole, but those mods make the game far superior to D3 and possibly D2 in my book for a single player experience.

It shall be your responsibility to inform the lazy such as myself that there is a new update - include the link as well because typing http://www.synergiesmod.com/ may be too exhausting for me :).

Did some first time coop yesterday. Was fun and it's great how they made the coop work so well!

I guess I will have to start new characters after installing these?

Also, is there some class/spec that compares to the trap assassin or poision necromancer from D2? Currently playing a poison outlander which is kinda like the latter, but just want to check with you veterans.

Finally getting around to playing TL2 and it's awesome! Can someone add me to the Steam group?

Do you lose your current characters after going with the synergies mod?

Can you only multiplayer with other people who use the synergies mod?

I installed the synergies mod yesterday and created a necromancer on veteran difficulty. After 4 hours straight, I can say that TL2 is even more fun and challenging than before. I just wish that the necro's skill trees weren't half empty and that the skills that do exist had more variety. That said, the spectral dragon and undead fury are beastly. Maybe even a little overpowered (for now), but that's fine with me.

Fuzzball is the expert, but I believe they are updating new skills pretty frequently for the Necro.

No you don't lose your current characters, but I don't think you can play nonsynergy MP, but I may be wrong.
