Torchlight 2 Catch-All

Pages

So I figured I would go ahead and make a new catchall. So what do you think the unknown classes will be? I'm pretty excited that they are moving a tad away from the fantasy and more towards the steampunk.

Yay!

So where does this stand in relation to the MMO they were working on?

It's a new game, separate of the MMO.

I assumed that you would be able to import characters forward as well, but the all new classes bit makes that unlikely.

I don't see how that would work considering they've stated that they aren't going to use the same classes. At least i saw it on a website somewhere but i can't find the exact quote at this point in time so we'll have to go with secondary information..... like this interview at PCGamer:

PC Gamer: Shall we move on to the new classes you’ve got and talk about the customisation?

Travis Baldree: We’re only announcing two classes at this point and, man, I hesitate to say what their names are, because they were arguing over them!

Max Schaefer: These are working names. These are not the actual final names.

Travis Baldree: I’m going to check my email, because I’m pretty sure someone had some names down! We’re going to get in trouble with our art teams if we say the wrong names. So the two classes we’re going to be revealing are the Wanderer, who’s almost kind of a… hell, we’ve got a class description here somewhere!

Max Schaefer: There was some push to call him the Nomad, or the Wanderer…

Travis Baldree: I guess they’re called the Outlander, now. Who has, what’s a good way of describing this so that somebody also doesn’t kill me? It’s kind of a Dune Fremen sort of character, someone who’s on the fringe and has survivalist tendencies, various facility with ranged weapons and low magic. The other classic is the Railman, who’se like an engineer melee warrior class that basically, on the frontier, trying to push forward into unpopulated areas, and they’re responsible for constructing the means of getting there and also the advanced fortifications and they also have to be able to protect themselves. They have some of that steam-punky mechanical bent from Torchlight.

[edit] Tannhauserred!!

[edit 2] Oh, and seens as i didn't read the full interview, the next paragraph states that you can't:

PC Gamer: Are you bringing over the original classes from Torchlight into Torchlight 2?

Travis Baldree: The original classes from Torchlight will actually not be playable in Torchlight 2. We didn’t want people to feel like they were retreading the same ground with a class, we wanted to introduce new stuff. We’ll probably represent those classes in the game so that it feels coherent, but we’re not going to ask you to play them all over again.

In your face slowpoke! That's what you get for wasting times with citations and tracking down interviews to inform others!

Rumors abound that you can't import characters forward. Which I suppose is good. I'm curious if they try to address the issue with Diablo style parties just being a grab fest/speed run.

How many players max for coop?

Well I still would like to see a "retirement" thing pass on to the 2nd game somehow. Obviously you can't do the same classes but I'd be surprised if they scrapped every item. Just want to be able to pass along that uber gun/sword/whatever to the 2nd game.

I'm going to guess a spot for each class.

Player numbers hasn't been determined yet and it may be 4-6 or 7. It's all in the interview.

Agreed. I'd like the option to pass on the contents of the global storage chest.

Assuming TL2 will have more than 3 (as seen in the original), that sound's about right. Regardless of how many classes the new game ends up with, hopefully multiplayer will allow at least 4 players.

So, is the MMO based on Torchlight 1 or this? Seems weird to announce a sequel and then base another game off the first one.

Max Schaefer: There was some push to call him the Nomad, or the Wanderer…

Roamer, wanderer, nomad, vagabond... Call him what you will.

It seems like a logical progression to me. First you get the mechanics of the game working - world creation, graphics, textures, combat functions, etc. Then you add multiplayer via LAN or internet, with larger open areas as well as dungeons. The next step is to add the ability to receive new maps from the server, and interact with larger numbers of players ... and then you're almost to an MMO.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one. I had fun with Fate, and then with Torchlight. It will be interesting to see what price point it lands at.

Happy and excited comment! Also... tagged.

Confirmed: The Littlest Hobo is a playable character in Torchlight 2.

I want this. Co-op is about the only thing that could make Torchlight better. Can't wait!

Your ninja-edits have been foiled! Give up, old man! We have you surrounded and your dog impounded. Don't try and talk your way out of this because you'll just fake to a miss.

*Rapped to a beat-box background tune

Hrm. I reckon we can think of a few things that could make torchlight better.... How about..... more interesting fighting mechanics. It could be something along the lines of how the witcher worked for melee combat but where you can choose learn new chain moves as you level up and shift around their placement in a fight-choreography panel... The interesting thing with the fight choreography is that different combinations of moves result in different modifiers.. e.g. Slash, hack, hew would give a +1% to damage on two hits and +5% on three hits....

Then you could add in other types of choreography to different classes with acrobatics to rogue-like characters that allow them to jump into the middle of the fray, slay/assassinate a creature and jump right back out again with a few clicks.

Ranged weapons could chain together attacks to activate bullet time (experienced by everyone in Co-op)....

(Didn't try a mage character in Torchlight but...)
Magic could have a melding system where your elemental and chosen powers can be fused into new ones through modifiers - using both mouse buttons either in sequence or together to trigger different types of the modifier.
e.g. You have an ice shard projectile and a firewall defence. One of your modifiers, activated by pressing mouse2, is a combination effect which results in a spray of ice that melts as it hits the floor, causing enemies to slip and stumble. Modifier 2 (mouse3) is a stacking effect whereby your ice projectiles become explosive on impact, causing both types of damage, though perhaps at a reduced rate.

I'm sure we can think of more

Also they could make the last eighth of the game not be hideously painful.

If this turns out to be another game that is on sale all the time I will be super pumped. That will make it so easy to get everyone I know into it. That in addition to the fact that it is more Torchlight has me excited.

Very excited about this title. Torchlight is one of those excellent titles that I can fire up and play for 30 minutes and be completely satisfied with the experience.

Co-op is a wonderful addition. Has there been any information yet about how co-op will work? Do you need to lobby up with someone or can one simply walk into (mordor) another persons game?

Torchlight = Alpha MMO (sp only)

Torchlight 2 = Beta MMO (sp & mp functions)

Torchlight ___ = MMO ("real" game)

That's my take and I think they're smart for doing it this way since they're a startup and all. They're bankrolling by selling us cheap, good products and using us as testers along the way.

I think Torchlight 2 will be specifically testing the 'instancing' functions of the MMO. I can also see them releasing a third game next year with PvP.

Exactly what went through my head when I read that.

Kind of funny how they are going to end up having an entire series before Diablo 3 is even released.

Woot!

I am very excited.

Max Schaefer: As Travis also mentioned earlier we have increased the customisation of your character so you can pick genders and hairstyles and stuff. Since we didn’t have that the first go round we would have had to completely reconstruct those characters anyway to add the facility to do that. So it’s a good opportunity to do some new stuff.

YEEESSSS!
