3 wasn't scary to me, but the first and second had some pretty insanely scary moments. All of that was due to the atmosphere that was created. With 3, I enjoyed it, but I worried that focusing on the multiplayer was going to hurt the rest of the what was built. Kind of like the co-op in Resident Evil.
I'll confess, if they released a Definitive Edition of the Dead Space trilogy I'd be in for it.
But right now, I want to see Visceral try a variety of different projects. Or at least something else original. I'm enjoying Battlefield Hardline well enough, and despite the game's marketing the actual gameplay is certainly a departure from the modern warfare norm.
Interesting perspectives. I almost forgot Dead Space 3 had co-op... didn't play it, didn't want to, hate other people.
Either way I do certainly agree that the original was pretty scary. I finished it late at night and wasn't able to sleep that night... kind of had a panic attack, honestly. I've gotten through many other horror games just fine, but that one pushed some buttons on me.
I understand that sales for Dead Space 3 weren't that good (like, worse than the original two) so the series is probably over. I'm really glad they wrapped up the story at least.
I was thinking about this recently with Silent Hill and Dead Space to a lesser extent. I could be off but there doesn't seem to be much room or desire in a large company like EA for middle budget games with a modest return (or even a long tail return). I think you could easily pull off a mid to low budget Silent Hill game but since Dead Space has a bit more action in it would be tough, but possible. Tension is such a big part of these games and can be done with less assets. Dead Space 3 was great with all the different locals and grand space scenes, but I didn't need it to satisfy my gaming itch. I think they really tried to broaden the audience with Dead Space 3 and ended up watering it down and didn't get the big return they wanted. Go big or go home I guess.

The Co-op is good actually! I played a bit of it last night with a friend and it's a fun game to sit back and run through due to the changed elements of the multiplayer. The only thing I really dislike the fact is that the single player game completely locks you out of an area (possibly more, only 30% through) if you do not have a partner, which is incredibly immersion breaking. Having a "2nd player is needed to access area" displayed when you try and get into a ship that's viewable and a location you can travel too sucks.
The crafting has definitely grown on me, I can't say that I like it more than the previous system of just grabbing a weapon and upgrading it. I loved using most of the weapons in previous games and this new format spawns some pretty useless ones. It does it's job of giving the player what seems to be more influence on their weapons, but most just lack the "umph" I'm looking for.
Also, while the planet is pretty slick looking, I really would have liked to spend more time up in space amongst the caravan of derelict ships. I feel they could have fleshed out so much more story with what happened to the fleet, individual stories of their crews and so forth. But so far I'm really enjoying what I've played, is it as good as the first two? Nawww, but it's still fun.
I really enjoyed 3 while it was in the derelict ships, and I liked the first part of being on the snow planet. What I enjoyed mostly was the 'retro' feel of all the designs--it made zero sense for ships and armor from, say, the year 2150 to look like they came from the 1950s, but I liked it.
There are only 3 Carver missions, and they are all variations on the cut-and-paste dungeons used for the other side missions. They really shine for their narrative.
Regardless, whether they have any bearing on the story or not being the completion freak that I am, it just irks me seeing something I can't get to because of reasons outside the single player game or story. If you need something like that, then I believe the player should have no clue of it's existence unless they seek co-op play. It just breaks the immersion for me.
I really enjoyed the first two games, but the third one did not sit well with me. I feel like the combat lost something when suddenly I was taking on a whole bunch of enemies at the same time, I hated the cover system, I didn't like the weapon crafting, and I feel like the intensity level was at "10" way more often. The story beats - especially the ridiculous love triangle - was less engaging as well. Also, the fact that the game did not save at all during side quests was immensely annoying.
I wouldn't say I hated it, but it felt really average to me. I have a strong desire to play through 1 and 2 again, but with 3 I felt glad it was finally over the first time I beat it.
Three felt... unnecessary. It's like they wanted to take it in a new direction but only committed to it halfway. It suffered because it was trying to have one foot in the old and the other foot in the new. I would have rather them committed to a full blown Gears of War experience than trying to keep flipping back to their horror roots at awkward intervals like they did.
ALSO I hated the ending. Seemed way overdone to me. However I loved the main antagonist. He was a really unique character and it felt really rewarding to finally take him down. I am sad there will never be a new Dead Space game. One of my favorite game franchises ever.

Agreed! If you're going to do something do it well! Like you said, it just seems that they didn't know what they wanted with this game judging from some of the mechanics. Is this a creepy horror? Or is it a cover based shooter? In my opinion, just stay with what got you there in the first place and expand in ways that ADD to the game itself. Also, I honestly don't think this is the last we will see of Dead Space. I know that they said if it didn't sell well they wouldn't touch it, but with the recent comments from Visceral about wanting to return to the series, I think we might get something from them. Not anytime soon of course, but possibly in the far future.
This is only somewhat related, but I just recently saw a trailer for a movie called Infini. Which sure looks like Dead Space: The Movie
