AMD 6950 In Game Weirdness (Black Screen)

In a couple of games -- most recently the Guild Wars 2 beta -- I'm getting some kind of weird performance issue with my AMD 6950 card.

1) If I have depth of field on I get no in-game screen but can still usually see any UI components.
2) If I turn depth of field off, I get the game screen back, but then sometimes part of the world will become unavailable to me. If I turn in X direction (that is unavailable) then the screen goes black. I can pass through the black and then on the other side I get the game world back. The same part of the world always seems to be unavailable, but since I can't see what's there I don't know if there's a common denominator to what I would be looking at.

I have 12.4 catalyst drivers (have updated, error occurs in both versions)
Have tried turning off any overclocking. Temps seem ok.

Initial thoughts?

Initial thoughts? Well, since you asked.

My guess is that you can blame it on the drivers (AMD drivers always do goofy things and newer versions often introduce issues. I had a problem with ME3 where the drivers screwed up texture loading.) That doesn't sound like an issue where your video card is going bad.

If it were me, I would do a driver wipe with driver sweeper, reinstall the current version that you have been using. If that didn't work, I would go to a legacy driver version - maybe a couple of driver revisions back in the cycle. Do you know if this problem started popping up after you updated the drivers? That whole driver wipe thing sucks because it ends up taking hours and half the time it doesn't work. I would just buy an Nvidia card. That's what I'm doing for my next upgrade. I've had enough of AMD's drivers.

I'll keep googling around and seeing if I can come up with anything.

Edit: What were the other games?

If the whole driver uninstall followed by Driversweeper and a reinstall dance doesn't fix it, consider yourself SOL until AMD gets new drivers out.

I too am switching back to Nvidia the very moment I can catch a GTX680 in stock on Newegg.

This devilry of Drivesweeper worked.

Feel free to go ahead and close this ticket!

(still getting an Nvidia)

Hurray! That's the second time that has worked this month to someone on here with an AMD card having issues. I'm not going to update my drivers until I have an issue seeing as how some people are having issues, and I haven't run into anything recently (granted, I haven't been playing too much these days.). I'm still on Catalyst 12.3.

It's always satisfying when you take the time to do that, and it actually works.

Glad it got sorted. My 6950 just started having a cursor corruption issue on the primary monitor (out of two). Looks fine on the second monitor. If you turn mouse trails on, it comes back to normal.

I've been pretty lucky with my 6950. I don't have anything consistently screwed up.

That said, I just had a really annoying Nvidia driver issue on my HTPC that came about due to a Windows update. It brought back a known flickering issue on badly encoded TV channels/content I'd worked for a long time to get fixed on the old driver. The old fixes wouldn't fix the new driver, so I had to go back multiple driver revisions to find one that wouldn't studder/flicker on some channels.

Thought I was going to have to reimage.

So both have their issues, but I do tend to have less problems with Nvidia.

If you're not having problems then... you're not having problems and there's no reason to bother with any of it.

Mine has been rock solid since I bought it.

Ugh, just loaded up the Kingdoms of Amalur demo a few minutes ago and what do I get? Nothing but UI elements once the game engine loads. Still running 12.3 drivers.

True, I downloaded the newest drivers last week and haven't had any issues.

Same here.

I believe there was a specific error with that demo (and perhaps the full game) with AMD cards. Something needs to be turned off in the game, but I can't for the life of me remember what it is. Check out the thread here, there will be info, or do a Google search.

Sounds like a specific error in someone's ability to code a game and make sure its fixed to keep potential customers.

I may check it out later / redownload the demo.

I had the same problem with my 6770 in the Guildwars 2 beta.

I was completely black except for some UI elements on most resolutions.

I slid the general graphics slider all the way down and set the resolution to my native desktop res 1440x900.

I was able to play most of the game but every now and then at different view angles at different areas, I would get a black screen.

I see there are some newer drivers available as of 4-25-12 so I guess I'll grab those. It is still very disappointing to have this annoying issue.
