Check out the video with nice gameplay footage.

Sounds and looks really good -

Action combat with no animation lock
Shared open world areas that can be soloed
Instanced 5 man dungeons
Tieflings, Drow, Half Elves, Elves, Humans, dwarves
Foundry player created content tools
Wizard, warrior and thief with tree branches to specialize into other areas (shadow thief, control wizard, etc.)
Due out by the end of this year

GW2 may have a worthy challenger and TERA probably has another nail or 2 in its coffin...

yah, now to get a new computer so I can actually play it without lag...

TERA was dead on arrival here but no one will believe till they see it first hand

The Foundry sounds amazing to go along with the MMO part.

THE FOUNDRY = GAME MASTER IN VIDEOGAME FORM

Cryptic’s proprietary user-generated content is also going to be present in Neverwinter right from day one. The full ability to make NPCs, stories, dungeons, and other content will be right there and built into the UI from day one. Entire campaigns can and will be created by the players, highlighted in the UI and fully-integrated with the community to promote and help out the best content creators. This is the system that was tailor-made for D&D and, Cryptic finally gets their chance to bring the two together.

There will also be a full crafting system for player gear and economy, and a very vaguely mentioned pet system that Andy really seems to want to talk about. Guilds and the like are in as well, but they aren’t ready to talk about just how they fit into the game. The UI, it’s worth mentioning, is really built around the content of the game as well. You will see upcoming events in different areas (little things like creature hunts, contests, and the like), directions for where you should be questing, and reminders for upcoming public events as well. Plus you’ll see all the top-rated Foundry content and trends across the community.

I have a noobish question about Neverwinter (I've only played Oblivion): Is the Foundry like Oblivion mods?

Edit: NVM looks like my question was answered in that quote, thanks.

I think it's more like that player-created content thing they tried in City of heroes (the Architect or something like that?).

It is like the Architect system in CoH but even more like the Foundry in STO as they are the same team, or at least share code and enhancements.

I couldn't quite handle NWN1, but NWN2 hit the sweet spot for me, and it was one of the first RPGs I ploughed through like a beast. I'm definitely excited for this game.

Even though I don't play MMOs anymore.

Preordering Torchlight 2 gives beta access to Neverwinter

It does but it also means you

1) Cannot get in on a 4 pack through Steam
2) Activate your key on Steam

For me these 2 things killed it. I'm not going to pay $5 to be in a beta for a game, not worth it. Also, even if it was worth it, living my whole TL2 life outside of Steam makes me sad.

Lifetime subscribers to Champions Online will receive access to the Neverwinter closed beta.

I believe I'm not the only one here who has a lifetime sub to Champions, so hopefully I'll see some of you in the beta. Also, I was surprised to learn that Cryptic is still selling lifetime subs to Champions Online for $299.

Huh. Looks like DDO for Munchkins.

anyone in this beta?

i have been ignored

They just announced a new class based on a 2 handed weapon fighter.

I wish I was in the beta...

For those that are going to play, get the Feruary edition of PC Gamer magazine. Nice write up of the game as well as a code for free mount.

This game looks amazing but then I realized it is produced by Cryptic. I'm afraid I'll enjoy the first 5 hours or so and then quickly get bored like I did with Star Trek and Champions Online.

They also made City of Heroes/Villains....so I'm not too afraid, plus it will have user generated content like the previous Neverwinter games.

Thing about Cryptic is that if you like the system a game has, it'll be comfortable for you indefinitely. I can drop into Star Trek and I know it'll be fun for ten minutes or four hours. They are really good at picking a formula and sticking to it. Star Trek panders to the fans, but it does it unashamedly, thoroughly, and with attention to detail and respect for the fan base.

I just wish someone would pick up Babylon 5 or Firefly for a space MMO. Firefly would be great - bar fights, shootouts and desperate space fights.

There's rumors going back and forth that the Firefly mmo is going back into development. Was waiting to see if it panned out before making a major post about it.

The current drama of the back and forth with the Firefly MMO.

Exciting, thanks!

Neverwinter Founder packs go on sale tomorrow, as well as beta weekend info.
February 8-10
March 8-10

Man, founders packs are becoming the norm with online games now.

Pay $200 and you get "Exclusive access to ‘Menzoberranzan Renegade', a Drow playable race like the legendary ranger Drizzt Do'Urden, complete with unique racial abilities and tattoo".

That's a lot of clams... do you think this is a way to limit the number of Drows in the world?

I love the Starter Pack that is valued at $49! Really? You think those couple of probably worthless items are really worth the full price of most AAA games?

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to trying this game out. But just stop with the over-inflated prices. And don't tell me that a pack is worth more than what you are actually selling it at. If it was actually worth $49, you would be selling it for $49!

Not to mention you know they'll be selling that race availablity at a reduced price later on.

I do have to keep reminding myself this is being published by PerfectWorld.

Well, and I recall the f2p conversion for Champions Online was typically light on value for subscribers and free players alike.

Update on founder's packs. They had to delay them while they fix some issues I guess.

Founder's Packs are up today. I purchased the $59.99 version, as I just didn't see the value in spending $200.(plus going on vacation soon, so don't want to take money out of my vacation funds ) Plus like ranalin said, they'll probably be selling the race/class as well as the armored spider mount at a later time.

Very excited to play - I got to play at last year's GENCON. Was very polished. I did spring for the high end Founders Pack as I am a sucker for Drizzt and overpriced doo dads that make me feel cool for about 10 minutes before I question my reasoning

I really really want to like this game. Its D&D and the 1st 4th Ed D&D rules from the sounds of it. But... by the makers of City of Heroes? They were pretty inventory light and D&D in essence is all about the magic items.

I really need to see some actual gameplay footage before I can commit to anything other than the $19.99 starter pack. Droping $60 isn't the issue, the problem is they don't have a very good track record IMO. That and MMO's have constantly disappointed me the last few years.
