Hero Academy Catch-All

I've completed 4 games so far.

Haven't won a single one.

I don't know if this game is for me

Don't most games take some time before you can beat people who have been playing them? Feel free to add me for a sufficiently noob-like opponent. =)

There's plenty of us just getting our feet wet. Very little idea what I'm doing -- probably failing.

Are you enjoying it? Do you like strategy games? Are you picking up strategies? Keep going!

I like strategy games, but I am not good at them. Not even a little. I'm going to stick with this game for a while, hopefully I'll win at least 1 game eventually

Throw me a friending if you like: http://steamcommunity.com/id/omahastylee

I sucked at this game when I started and I generally am not very good at strategy games. I'm starting to pick up on it though. It's a shame Athros has moved on since he(?) is a great teacher.

To all the noobs, the secret to learning the game is the 'undo' feature.

Do what you're thinking, then hit the redo button, and try another combo/strategy. I picked up so much from doing this.

Also, (disclaimer, not sure if these are on steam or not, WHERE ARE MY OSX INSTALL DISKS?!?!) do the single player challenges. They teach you a lot about the subtleties of the different units.

Finally, don't be discouraged. Some of this is skill, but a chunk of it is luck of the draw on your units too.

At the end of the day, just enjoy it. Sometimes the interactions in game between units is the best part, and the outcome - win/lose is secondary.

For the record, playing on my notebook against my wife on her iPhone right now.

She's yawning loudly and wants me to come to bed, but she's already bought the color customization DLC and keeps taking turns.

Basic noob tips:

1. Don't be afraid to sacrifice a weak unit to kill a upgraded unit, super unit or doing big damage to the crystal.

2. It's annoying but you have to count what has gone through the deck or at least remember if they used scrolls (or the tribes meat). If scrolls are gone you be more calculated about the results and take more risks. There is a hero academy tracker app.

3. Anticipate your opponents moves, that means you have to visualize what they can and can't do.

4. Basic strategy is get upgraded tanks on the assault boost tile and put healers behind your tanks. Then attack the crystal on your high damage units.

This can take a LOT of the fun out of it. It may be why I lose so much, but I enjoy my games without the need to count plays. Plus, it's all about the fun, right?

That's very cool, I loaded it onto my fiance's iPad, but she complains it's 'too strategic.' Maybe if we play together I can get her into something meatier than Tiny Birds and Mega Run.

Wow, seriously, the Sniper has a firing range of 8 squares?

Can't wait to get these. OSX disks found! Boot Camp imminent.

Thanks to the really awesome m0nk3yboy, I now own this game. Is there a steam group I can get an invite to? I'll have to bone up on my nerd lessons and then jump into some challenges with you all.

Thanks again m0nk3yboy!

m0nk3yb0y got those copies from other generous Goodjers! Let's call it the Sparkle Ponies effect.

It's all good, I let Black Sabre know that he was the recipient of the Goodger Collective, I was just it's conduit

I'm actually doing some additional gifting too. It's weird when it's not ponies.

Picked it up last night and started a few games. Really digging it so far. I can see why this is so popular, especially on iOS.

It is amazingly awesome on iOS.

Any of you Steam guys want to hit me up for a game (until I get my dual boot done) I'm m0nk3boy on the Hero Academy servers (had to drop the 'y') so feel free to hit me up. I tried to invite BlackSabre to a game just through the iPad tonight, but it didn't want to play, maybe I need to be dragged into the match the other way.

How did that work for you Lil Codger? Did you initiate with the wife's device, or could she get you on Steam?

Sadly that can be true. I wish Robot can just have it part of the game.

I love this game being on Steam and being able to play with more GWJers. I love the new team. Worth every penny.

Hi new peoples. Start games with me plz. Name's the sames.

And feel free to ask for help on strategy, as a lot of us have been playing this for quite some time on iOS.

Okay, thrown out a couple of challenges. Let's see how these things go.

I opted for the base game, it's below my impulse buy threshold. If other factions look interesting I'll pick them up as I go along, or on sale.

New people feel free to challenge me (shoptroll) if you want a punching bag

She loaded it and found me. Invited me to the first game.

I just picked it up too, feel free to beat me up as well. Strangely addicting, but I have no idea what I'm doing so far.

I believe they mentioned this on the Robot Entertainment blog that they believe it'd take away from the nature of the game by including that list in game. Although it can inform you as to your opponent's possibilities, you don't really need it for non-tournament play.

8 games in. 0 games won.

I think you and I should square off, one of us HAS to win a game, then. Wait, is it possible to tie?

Atras wrote:

In theory. If you have your last unit kill a shielded Tribe unit (thorns aura) with low enough health you could cause a tie.

I've never seen a unit die from the spiked shield. Is that possible?

Well I started this up last night and got a couple of turns in vs MonkeyBoy. So far pretty cool. Still trying to work out what the hell does what, but I really like the asynchronous aspect. It helps as I don't always have time to meet up with people so being able to do it this way is just awesome.

I'll have to go and add a bunch of people when I get home... is there a list, or should I just go back through the last few pages? If you want to beat me to it, I'm BlackSabre.

Alright, so I'm learning too -- and I'm 5-0 (admittedly two are against my wife).

Some thoughts from a fellow noob:

- Learn the strengths of your units. AOE (area of effect) units are good when your opponent has a crowd. Others do high damage. Etc.
- Watch physical vs. magical damage. Some units are more/less susceptible to different attacks.
- Use the power squares to your advantage. The defense and attack squares are quite valuable.
- If you take the time you can always "do the math". You know your opponent will have 5 moves (generally). Predict them. How many attacks can he get off? Will he have that last AP to stomp you (this is critical!)
- Healers are valuable. A unit not stomped is one that can be brought back.
- I'm not sure, but I think the TF2 team is a little hard to play, and the dwarves seem to have less units. The council seems easier to start with.
- Don't be afraid to use your items. Sometimes a 20% reduction in damage will keep a unit upright. Sometime a damage boost turns a ho-hum turn into carnage.

Just some random thoughts. Mostly -- have fun. Laugh, even when you screw up.

EDIT: Another thought -- just because you put a guy on the board doesn't mean he needs to rush to the attack. I've seen a lot of goodjers do this. There is a certain safety in pairs and triplets. There is also a certain danger there.
