Hero Academy Catch-All

Yes, you could say that.

AIGHT. Back in the game! After your continued conversations, I just sent out a bunch of invites.

Be warned! My play will be sporadic, as I'm on the iPad, which goes with my wife half the week. (that sounds like some sort of weird custody thing, right? I'll just leave it at that...)

Send me a game. BlackSabre.

What's your game name?

I'll just echo what Crockpot said. If it's async, it means just that. It's a format that really works for me being 13-18 hours ahead of some of the US Goodjers, but having said that, BlackSabre and I are in the same state, and we still very rarely meet up for 'head to head'.

The number of games I have going async (both Hero Academy and Ascension) represents about a 30 minute investment to go through everyone. That is my 'quiet time' before bed, and my wake up ritual in the morning.

If I get return plays while I look through the others, that's a bonus, but it's not something I hold out for.

I remember my great uncle playing chess via correspondence 'back in the day'. He was in London, and his opponent in Moscow. It would be days/weeks between turns. If he was still alive today, I'm sure this kind of gameplay would blow his mind.

Gotta go, there are some kids I need to vacate from my lawn

I'm a little surprise that async gameplay is a turn off for most people. I see this recurring problem that async games is stressing people out, which should be opposite from that experience. Here are some big tips for you:

Don't check your games all day. Turn off notification. Delete it from your iPhone if this is a problem then only play on your PC and iPad (I do this). Set a certain time of the day where you check for your turns (I do breakfast then before bed, sometimes when I'm watching TV). Don't stress if you don't do your turn within minutes. Hell, I go on for days without taking a turn and not even stress about it. You don't need this game distract you all day. Only agree to the # of games that you think you can handle (I do 2 games per a team). Don't be afraid to deny Goodjer and friend game requests. Don't get too caught up on bad moves and analysis paralysis. Sometimes bad moves is the only option. Don't be afraid to resign from a losing game. Say GG and be on your way. Take your time and relax. It's only a game.

Now having that said, I can understand if this isn't your cup of tea. But there is a lot people are just taking Hero Academy (and async gaming) to the extreme and just getting burnout over something that is suppose to be a casual experience.

Yeah, I kinda like the fact that I can just play when I feel like it. I've even found that I'll load up a match and just not see any good move, so i'll close it, come back later and then try again. That's the beauty of this style of game. No pressure, no rush.

I've done this exact same thing many times.. That's usually when i do the "reinforce" play and pull out more troops/heal up and consolidate.

Well I'm pretty sure I've lost a few of my games. I haven't actually been beaten yet, but it's coming. Pretty sure Sixteen Blue and Dyni have my number. Also, theres someone else who has my crystal down to about 1% health, so yeah, that one is lost too. Also, guys, happy to play again, if you beat me, just send me another game. I'll get better eventually!

I started playing when it hit Steam. Feel free to challenge me. I'll send out a few challenges to some of the recent posts for them.

HA account = jigsawhc

Well SixteenBlue claims my first crushing defeat. I have a feeling that 2 more are coming today. Johnvanjim is toying with me, I can tell. And Dyni has this big evil sense about him

Still, it's fun and I do actually enjoy it.

I don't know what you're talking about...

I can vouch for this, Dyni is mean.

+1

Yay, won my first match, and even took no crystal damage too. Woot!

Gratz! Got my first win in yesterday as well.

Busy 5 days, apologies for the slow rate of return, back at it now though.

Interesting article on how Hero Academy is reaching a new audience in China. They even made a exclusive team for the Chinese market:

We're introducing a totally new team of characters based on Jiang Hu, the alternate fantasy world that’s basically China’s equivalent of Middle Earth. Movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers are set there, and the Chinese audience has grown up on thousands of other movies, TV shows, books, comics, and games featuring its flying swordsmen, supernatural monks, and so on. We worked closely with Robot Entertainment’s producer and creative director to ensure the art style of our Jiang Hu Heroic Team fit the game, and that they played well with its original heroes.

Also they are getting a "Quick Mode" (author of the article noted in the comments):

Chinese gamers are notoriously impatient. During the first 2 weeks of launch, the top feature request amongst Chinese gamers was for a real-time mode. In particular, mid - hardcore strategy gamer in China like to play in bursts of 2-3 hours and desire quick response times from opponents. That's one of the reasons why we are launching a "Quick Game mode" with the Chinese edition in the upcoming update of Hero Academy - China Battlegrounds. Quick mode matches are a new kind of match that requires a 180 second response time between round submissions.

Hopefully this means we will get the same team down the road.

I've dropped from 18 simultaneous games to about 5 in the past few weeks. I guess the shine on this one is finally fading, eh?

It's finally fading for me, definitely.

I'm finding time to be an issue for me (sorry everyone on my playlist).

I'm lucky at the moment if I can get to catching up every three or so days. It's not through a lack of wanting either, life just got really busy, really quickly over the last month.

I've seen a drop off as well. If anyone wants to play I'm still putting turns in, but I mostly only do 1 turn/day for each game. So I'm slow.

However, I will admit that I went back to playing on the iPad after playing the PC version for a week. TF2 team is nice and all but the interface is still optimized for a touchscreen.

I notice that I play in waves with one turn a day. I don't really see myself permanently quitting for awhile until couple of other better turn base async strategy games replace it. I think I have room for only three in my life. I only play two right now (this and summoner wars). I wouldn't be surprise if the third will be Mechwarrior Tactics.

Three? I can barely keep up with this and Ascension. Which is probably why I haven't touched Summoner Wars after I downloaded it

I don't have 20 matches going at once like a lot of players. Usually I have 8 for HA and 4 for SW. It really only takes me a couple minutes to go through all if them daily.

I forgot about Ascension... I need to try it out...

I had a few problems with the game and my connection so it took out my momentum.

And like Thin_J said, usually when I sit down to play on my PC there's usually something a bit more compelling to play.

I'll get back to it in the new month though, it is fun.

I made a folder on my iPad for all my async games I'm playing, and I'm lucky if I get to them at least once a night.

I notice I go through games much faster on
the PC. iPad and iPhone has it's place but PC is easily my favorite platform to play on. I wish SW was on Steam.

Fading for me as well, looks like it peaked out with the TF2 team addition, which kinda tarnished the game balance a bit for me..

I'll keep squeaking games in every now and again and definitely finish the ones I've got going on, but I won't have the 30 simultaneous games anymore for the forseeable future.

I'm still playing some. Try to take at least a couple turns a day so no one is waiting on me. Hopefully the new class they announced will add some new life. I still have steam cheevos to unlock

From heroic schools in the east comes a balanced team who turns their enemy's powers against them. The mystical warriors of the Shaolin team have defeated countless enemies in their own land. Now they hope to test their skills at the fabled Hero Academy. The Shaolin's heroes reduce the strength of their enemies, and can combine their attacks for additional damage.

Team Bonus: Each unique unit that damages an opponent in the same turn deals successively higher damage.

Yeah, it just lost interest for me. I may come back to it at a later date, but for the moment, it just doesn't have enough depth to keep me there for a long period of time.
