I would recommend medium or even large maps, it will take you a few games to beat it, or one really long game, but it gives you more time to build. The really small maps are more for expedited play and to do well with it you will need to have your economy and moves decently planned out and not waste any time. in larger maps you can take your time building up and fortifying. sure the ai will always be super human fast and might conquer half the galaxy without you noticing, but you can build up and defend yourself against him and start destroying him. In sins, it is almost always easier to defend than it is to attack. You get alot of defensive structures that can hold a large force at bay or even decimate a large force with little to no loss. This makes the game take longer but you can see the results of research and ship levels pretty clearly and begin to make mental notes to yourself about what structures are really needed in the beginning compared to what is needed at the end. What ships are great and when are the best deployed. For instance I rarely use the mothership capital in most games, instead I do the battleship and build a colony ship to go in afterwards. I buy a mothership towards late game sometimes when i (as visari) start using all of my colony ships for starbase creators. A lvl 1 battleship capital can take asteroids and such by itself with few problems, a lvl 3 (or 2 depending on race) might be able to take on a full planet neutral force by itself even. building attacker ships to go with it reduces its damage and time so you dont have to wait for it to heal itself between taking systems.

Vanilla Sins is ... ok. But if you plan on playing rebellion, I would highly recommend switching over to diplomacy because rebellion is diplomacy with more stuff added on. The jump from vanilla to rebellion might be like the jump for civ 3 to civ 5 (maybe not so dramatic, but you get my drift).

Rebellion 1.0 is out in a couple days. Grand old comp stomp next weekend?

Friend request sent to Strangeblades. Zellbrige, I tried friending you up as well but the name listed in your profile doesn't turn up anything on Steam's search.

I friended you up but my Sins copy is tied to Stardock/Gamestop only. Does that matter? Anyhoo, I'd be up for a non-Rebellion game this weekend.

Not really, sins uses ironclad for matchmaking I think, though I think the steam versions communicate with each other a bit.

Thanks for the tips. Large map it is then with all the fixins turned on. I just drank a beer and am ready to go.

You weren't drinking before? Well of course there's your problem! Alcohol = winning strategy.

Did they say when they were sending out the Steam codes for those who preordered?

You should already have the code if you pre-ordered. The beta was all done via Steam.

I found my Rebellion code on stardock.com -> My Account -> My Downloads

Rebellion was announced to be Steamworks back in... Feb maybe? Several months ago. Even mentioned in the OP of this thread.

What's the point of Steamworks if you need another login to matchup in multi? :?

I think rebellion uses steam's friends list and can join games via steam, but trinity released on steam still uses the old one I think. And from what I saw, the rebellion one is kind of a hybrid, I think it retained my friends from original sins online but people can still join my game via steam I think. We have only done a few multi games in rebellion, and the last one was a bit ago.

Ah, so the Beta unlocks into the full version?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the same code, because when I go to the Rebellion page on the Steam store it says I already own it.

It is the same code. Steam will download a patch it will become the full game.

Sooo.. Are we starting up the Saturday Game again?

Same. LRM spam here we come!

So if I buy this through Stardock (so that I can get the 10% discount) will I get a key for Steam?

Or better yet, is there a way to get the 10% discount through steam itself?

Unless something has changed from the Beta, you can use the Stardock key in Steam. So I think the answer is yes you purchase at Stardock and then use it in Steam.

I find it kind of silly I couldn't get the deal on Steam, however once purchased through Stardock it was painless to unlock on steam using the key I was given.

If there was pain, it was overwhelmed by the joy of thinking of my fleet of LRMs.

im in for a saturday game.

I'm afraid of LRMs.

I bought this.

I've never finished a Sins game. I usually got about 2 hours in, at which point options paralysis really set in. I want to learn how to play this game.

Anyone have any tips? I'm busy on Saturdays for the next couple of months, unfortunately.

I decided to reduce my map to small, stick with vanilla sins (don't want analysis-paralysis) and spend every second, colonize as fast as possible and keep expanding my fleet. So far, so good. Will be posting screen shots later.

The more planets I conquer and leave undefended the more money I will have to replace military units lost in inevitable battles. That's my reasoning. So go west young man.

I am also reading this wikia which is pretty darn helpful. Strategies can be found here.

Depending on when you guys start, I'd love to join too, but I'm concerned my ping might screw up your game. Interest in seeing the outcome at the very least--take plenty of screenshots!

Edit: I'm newly single and living in Hong Kong in a new bachelor pad. Playing Sins until 3-4 am would be awesome.

I'm just playing solo for now. Play a game and we will compare how badly we get our butts kicked. With screenshots!

We used to start at 1:00p EST on Saturday. I think that is still the plan (see Steam event) . I would show up a bit early so that we can get a handle on the number of players.

I would join you guys but I have a BBQ in the evening here so no go. Enjoy!

You keep saying that we are going to play Saturday, but I have been seeing a lot of you on during week nights, and more importantly, without inviting me! I feel cheated!

Hopefully my new headset will come in today or tomorrow for a rousing game of sins. I compstomped last night, 8 normals 4 teams, as TEC Rebels. Funny thing, I forgot to make teams permanant and the moment we crushed the last team, my comp teamate immediately declares war. It was such a dick move that I totally would have done in its place.

I've been dabbling in Rebellion single player the last couple nights to get the hang of it, as well as to try to knock the rust off. A lot of the changes are only revealing themselves as I play. It's good stuff though, definitely a good step up from the last version.

Is this game worth it? I've been contemplating the purchase for a while now...
