Tribes: Ascend Catch All

So is Rabbit just a light armored thing? Or can you be competitive with medium? Never tried it before, but figured that would be another easy to understand mode to move into.

Big changes for Tribes.
Sounds great, and I love the clean, new UI. It doesn't sound like they're going Battlefield's route of strict progression, which I hate. I'll have to wait for the update, but I don't think I have an issue with any of their changes.

Also, Steam Group. I'll leave it public for a day, then set it private. A good stopgap until they add Tribes to the Steam store.

Let's play tonight, 9 EST. Vent is encouraged.

Sweet was looking forward to some new weapons for some of the classes.

If you spent gold or XP and tokens, do not worry it will all be refunded and you will be able to spend it all again however you want using the new system.

Due to the depth and breadth of changes in this update, users will start fresh in the game with no items purchased. Gold and XP will be refunded based on previously earned XP, Tokens and Gold in the game (such that your time in the game thus far is rewarded). This will allow each user to choose how to allocate their earnings optimally under the new system without being constrained by your previously made choices.

The spinfusor for the Soldier now costs me 42,000? Come on. That was what I was learning with because I thought that was the most common weapon type across multiple classes.

I think I only have like 35,000 points that I got refunded.

I'm hoping for equivalency in terms of XP and gold, we're they cut down so I won't be able to unlock most classes right away?

Yeah, this sucks for new players. They completely took away what I know.

Irritated. I know it's beta, but they should have had a reasonable way to get back to similar things that you had before. No way I can afford the gun+anywhere close to any other upgrades.

Eh? The friends list has always shown all friends, not just ones that are online or playing.

Interesting, I had the 30 day beta opt-in and ended up with 6k gold (which is what it was originally, I think) and 100kish points.

The furthest I got with any class was 12 or 13/18 with the soldier.

Also; I found a way to view your friends list. You have to select play and then join friend's game. It's not really the handiest way to check things.

When I clicked "Friends" on the main menu it doesn't display a list of friends, just "Join Friend" "Add Friend" and "Remove Friend" whereas pre-patch you just clicked friends and the entire list popped up.

It seems, to me, that if you click a button labelled "Friends" it would be reasonable for it to display your friends.

Before the upgrade, I was able to join silentsod's game the other night. It was CTF, and I really don't think I understand all the game stuff to really get into that yet, though. So I went back to my easier/less complex modes.

Double!

Thanks for setting this up tonight, Cyrax, I enjoyed getting shot in my face by you

I'm finding movement and whatnot a touch buggy since the patch. I also had a Katabatic flag grab where the game glitched and returned the flag to their base while my UI showed me as still having the flag in hand.

I was having some environment pop-in, which I use to only see when the level was first loading after I joined. I might post more impressions later, but right now it seems most of their changes have been for good, except a few UI usability things. Like silentsod said, they've gimped the friends list, and things in general take more clicks/time to do. Suppose I'll just have to get use to those. Thanks for playing tonight, Arovin and silentsod.

I ended up playing for a few more hours and am still having a blast. The one gameplay change I don't like is there are no heavy movement speed increases available any more. There's a post on their forums about the new GUI which I hope gets read and the feedback taken into consideration. You can't even hop into a quick match of your choosing in two clicks any more. The XP tweaks make it take 4 million XP in order to unlock everything which seems really steep for people who don't buy any "gold."

Other than that I can't wait for my new mouse to arrive because the one I have has a broken microswitch so any full auto weapons, tactical strikes, or anything with a held mouse press has a slim chance of working. It's been going on for a couple of weeks now, though I had to make sure it was the mouse and not something else.

The only new weapons that seem to be really decent are the MIRV and the Infiltrator's stealth spinfusor. I really enjoy the new global XP idea, it makes it so that even if you've maxed out a class you can continue playing them and earn XP towards other classes. The weapon prices seem entirely crazy, but they have to make their cash somewhere I guess.

But it's a real turn off on the game. I'm almost level six, and all the XP I've earned isn't enough to buy the soldier's spinfusor. Makes me want to stop playing, when before this change, I was about ready to buy the pack.

Maybe my perspective as a noob doesn't matter, but you'd think I'm who they'd want to attract.

It's a fine line from feeling like you have a chance to getting stuff to tempt people to buy stuff a bit faster, to soul crushing prices that make me think even if I bought a booster, it would still take tons of time to earn enough for stuff I wanted.

I agree that the prices are absurdly high on the weapons, especially something as iconic as the spinfusor. Hirez has lowered XP prices before, let's hope they do it again, for everyone's sake.

When they did the rollback I ended up with a little over a million XP, converted from the 22,000 tokens I'd saved up. I've spent about half and have all the classes unlocked as well as substantial upgrades for most. The booster definitely gives you XP damn fast, but I think the max these weapons should go for is 100,000. 170,000 is an awful lot of playtime, even with boosters. I am REALLY enjoying the infiltrator's spinfusor. You can tie up an entire defense by taking pot shots at flag guards then disappearing again.

I've got 32K XP. I get 200-400 XP* per round at best playing TDM, and I often finish reasonably high.

The first gun for the classes all seem to be 42K.

That's stupidly high. They don't seem to get that the stick on the carrot needs to make the donkey think he's close to getting the treat.

*Edit after playing a round or two.

I like the changes and am glad they pared it down to nine classes and give a starting player a variety of classes so they can actually be effective in their chosen role.

I finally broke down and bought a rifle for $10. The rifle sucked; not going down that rabbit hole. Uninstalled.

edit: They certainly deserved that $10 though, for all that I've played.

The $30 beta opt-in was the best deal, as far as I can tell, and I don't regret it. It also seems to me that the weapons are all useful in their own way, just that a lot of them are tricky to learn and use. The Doombringer's chaingun, for instance, is really more of an area/route suppressor than a dueling weapon and the Doombringer is weak at close range duels.

That said, with the way XP is doled out even with VIP status I still earn 600-1000XP per CTF match which is incredibly low compared to the cost in XP of weapons and perks.

I keep thinking about doing that, but for $20 with the coupon I got for signing up to the Hi-Rez account. But this kind of model is keeping me from pulling the trigger.

Maybe this is more of the way it works in Korea, I don't know.

OK, confused: I joined a game right at the end, got 1200 points. Did no real work. Then 500+ points in a "meh" round, then the points started trickling down to my normal 200-300 per round of TDM. Do they do some kind of boost to the first games you play in a day?

You get a first win of the day bonus of 1000XP.

I was accepted into the beta today but when I load the game I can't see the mouse cursor and when I try training there are no textures and all the polys are black. Does anyone know where I can find a support forum or file a bug report?

There's an option button near minimize and close on the launcher that should help. You can verify the integrity of your files, and if that doesn't work, send a message to Hi-Rez support.

I found it but the validate button is not working. I'm re-installing now but after reading this thread I'm not going to get upset if it doesn't work. I already have LoL and Super Monday Night Combat draining my wallet.

One thing to bear in mind is that unlike a AAA beta things are very much rough and changing in the Tribes beta. For instance the most recent patch broke skiing a little bit and occasionally kills your momentum on a smooth looking uphill slope. It's something I've had to get used to.

And some of the maps are functional, but probably not really dressed up with final detail.

EDIT: These are horrid TDM spawns. Let's just spawn enemies one right behind the other. I've been on both sides of spawning in and having somebody that's just barely starting to move from the same spawn point right in front, which generally results in a spinfusor to somebody's back. I've gotten to where I spawn and immediately look behind me because a lot of times, there's somebody there. That's actually worked out in my favor a time or two.
