Tribes: Ascend Catch All

You guys can add me as well.

Tempestblayze

I'm in as JStengah.

I'm on as PXAbstraction. Stylez and I have been playing this a lot lately, I'm really getting into it.

A friend of mine got me a Beta key, but I don't think I'll have time for it. Anyone want it?

I'll take it if no one's claimed it!

If there are any available keys please let me know!

Not liking this whole unlock classes take on Tribes. I can't just jump into heavy armor with mortars and a plasma rifle and go destroy bases.

Very true, but thankfully Juggernaut unlocks very quick.

I too just got a beta key. Username is Swarfigo.

I just got an email:

CONGRATULATIONS!

You have been selected to be one of the first people to play and give feedback on Tribes: Ascend, the fast-paced action shooter from Hi-Rez Studios.

This e-mail contains an activation key that you may use to get started as a member of the Tribes: Ascend Early Testing Program.

Woot!

Good timing too, a new patch came out today. Be sure to list your username so we can friend you up!

Brand new beta key free to the first person to ask for it.

I got a beta key from their facebook promo so I'll be bringing this down overnight and on some tomorrow.

Never played a Tribes game before so it'll be interesting.

I'm having a lot more fun with this after deciding not to try and make it Tribes 2. I then decided to pick up the pre-order package. After playing and collecting tokens for a few classes and using most of the gold from the package I've almost unlocked all of the classes. The bonus for VIP plus the 30 day boost bonus means lots of tokens.

I've added everyone who listed their name in the thread. I love Tribes and I'm really enjoying this one. Join me!

Also, there's a sixth shooter in Dust 514.

off-topic,
Looking at videos, Blacklight Retribution seems pretty bad, agree?

Hey! So have they created some kind of friends list or grouping capability yet? I might have missed it on the control panel–only just installed last week before my business trip (this week) but I really like what I've seen so far. Just been playing the default class (soldier right?) and learning to ski again. I loved T2 like a... uh, lover!

Do they use your HiRes username for friending? If anyone wants to play, I'm still new around here but can totally vouch for my coolness.

PS3 exclusivity is going to ruin any chance of success this game ever had. I seriously cannot fathom what CCP was thinking.

MS didn't want to play nice,
PC's have mouse users, PC users can already play Eve Online.
They are trying to reach new markets.
You are overestimating the number of people in Eve Online. It is not WoW, they don't need that many people.

Also, why does PS3 exclusivity ruin it's chances? Everybody says this but no one says why.

Wynd!

Damn you! I've played a few rounds against you and you seem to have your cap routes down pretty good

I have one class left to unlock. My recommendation if you enjoy this game is buy the $30 booster. You get plenty of gold to unlock classes, or if you want to hang on to the gold to see what they release later on, the 30 day booster will get you well on your way to unlocking the classes. I'm only one class away from having everything unlocked at this point and still have 1400 gold leftover for whatever is next out of Hirez for this game.

At this point though I'm fairly confident in saying you can't expect to be at all competitive without buying in.

People who already play EVE are the ones most likely to be interested in Dust 514 in the first place. Releasing a tie-in game for a PC title and telling PC users they'll need to buy a console to play it is one of the more foolish moves I've ever seen CCP make.

RolandofGilead wrote:

Perhaps this is true, but trying to reach a new market while actively denying much of your existing userbase doesn't seem to me to be a terribly wise business decision.

I fail to see how the number of people who play EVE affects this? Other than the fact that EVE players are the most likely to know that Dust 514 is even in development. In any event, overestimation isn't an issue when CCP makes the figures public. EVE had a 4th quarter 2011 subscriber base of slightly over 350,000 with a peak concurrent user count of just above 63,000.

First it gives them the smallest user base possible out of the Xbox/PS3/PC possibilities, and secondly it sticks Dust 514 on the console with the most universally maligned online interface that I've heard of. In this community, as well as many others, I have always heard the same story: "If you want to play online, get a 360."

None of those things are true.

The games are connected in one universe. Whatever happens in Eve, happens in Dust. They probably need less than 100,00 new people to make it worthwhile.

I play online using both PC and PS3 and they're pretty much equivalent. You just go to the portion of the menu that lays out online portions of the game. What do xbox 360s do?

RolandofGilead wrote:

Find me somewhere non-EVE related that has active hype and community based around Dust 514. Don't look here, because the game hasn't even scraped up enough interest to merit a catch-all.

Yes, I'm quite familiar with the theory of how Dust 514 will work. What I am saying is that no business in their right mind attempts to achieve the minimum necessary for success, and that I believe their choice of console exclusivity is limiting their potential userbase both unnecessarily and unwisely.

RolandofGilead wrote:

Provide a large active group of friends to play with? From everything I've seen the Playstation Network is a dismal failure at this by comparison. A quick glance at these forums shows me no active threads regarding PS3 exclusive multiplayer titles. That's hardly a scientific metric to go by, but it certainly offers some backup to the word of mouth I've been hearing on the subject for years.

Don't get me wrong, I won't want Dust 514 to fail. Despite the disappointments they've handed me in recent years I still consider myself to be a fan of CCP. Unfortunately I think they're heading down an ill advised path with the development of Dust 514. Likewise I have nothing against Sony, I'm a huge fan of the SOE division and still play their games. I don't own a PS3, and that is solely due to the fact that neither Sony or any third party has managed to provide me with a compelling reason to purchase one.

Sony had to make an exception for their network, MS decided not to.

I can't comment on friends lists. I have never played with anyone on my friends list on any platform, be it Live, PSN, or Steam.

Last figure I found was 12.5 million Gold Live Users worldwide. You can add several million to that.
55.5 million PS3's sold worldwide and all of them can play online multiplayer for free.
Goodness, what a poor userbase they have.

Alright, I better learn how to actually play Tribes now.

Got killed by cyrax while trying out my recently unlocked jumper class. Man it seems useless so far

I was hoping to get a lot more confrontation during the game, but someone else decided to use the net at the same time, so I switch to engi to minimize the shooting and maximize the stand-still-and-hold-a-button excitement that is repairing turrets.

Stylez wrote:

It's probably one of the most unconventional and hard to learn classes. I've played the majority of my time as a Jumper. I just hit lvl 9 and have most of the skills unlocked, and I still have some difficulty with it. Besides getting use to the unusual crossbow, an arched shot, the real trick is mastering his boost ability, speed, and energy which necessary to compensate for his squishy nature.

Edit:

I've been playing quite a bit lately. I had some extra money in my paypal account so I purchased a 10 day booster. Those boosters sure do make getting tokens and XP a whole lot faster. I've unlocked Jug, Pathfinder, and the Technician so far. I do have 9800 tokens at this point and I'm thinking I'll unlock Doombringer tonight. Those forcefields sure seem useful on some of the maps.

Edit: Thanks Cyrax!

Is there a set night for Tribes play? I'm interested but I'm not sure I want to leap into playing it without other people who don't know what they're doing
