Tribes: Ascend Catch All

And my keys go to SpyNavy and Tamren. I'll pass them on when I get home tonight. Enjoy!

I just got into the beta and it seems pretty fun so far. I'm just playing F2P which is limited to 2 loadsets. There is definitely some potential in this.

I can't figure out how to set up my binds. I don't use WASD, so I started rebinding stuff, and I dug myself into a hole of indecision based on not knowing the game style enough.

Liked this, but it needs a ton of polish. Is there a server browser or is there only the play button which dumps you into a match?

So far just the join queue button. I have been surprised at how low the user count has been at times. At least on the west coast servers. Maybe all the games were full but I have seen matches start 4vs4.

Anyone want a Closed Beta key? First person to PM me gets it.

EDIT - The code's been claimed.

I've got two codes for those who want them. Also my in game name is Edwin so add me to your friends list.

I'll take one, assuming they've got servers I can get a good connection to over this side of the pond.

What are people's game names? (Added you Edwin.)

I have a feeling this game will be absolutely awesome with a solid team working together.

I just checked and have a key as well. Still haven't played this or Super Monday Night Combat.

Forgot to mention, Add me as "StylezXP"

"RiverRatMatt" here. Do they have clan tags yet?

Apparently I have 4 keys. Cool. I'll figure out how I want to give them away tomorrow.

Edwin's a genius. Post in-game names, how quaint!

Regarding the game, it was fairly unpolished (no surprise) for about the first three weeks. Now, in the past week or so, the game's menu isn't barebones and buggy, they've added a new mode, made many gameplay tweaks, and best of all I now no longer get disconnected because of my connection. I can't wait until this is released so everyone can play it and form a GWJ community. BF:BC2 was the last MP game I felt this strongly about.

edit:

Tribes didn't want to register your name. You sure that's it? Maybe it's the dash?
So I re-entered it without the dash and it was accepted. Hope that's you!

My name in Tribes is "Elycion" (yeah, who would have ever guessed?)

I've done nothing but single player training mode so far, I'm hoping to get some multiplayer time in this weekend.

The changes to the spinfuser since last patch have been substantial. Slightly higher AOE has made it much more appealing. I hope they bring back the bomber and mobile base from T2.

My only complaint is that unlocks are going to take forever at this rate, but I think I'll drop 10 bucks to unlock a class.

Doh! That is me. I don't even know my name I guess.

I'm listed as SignusX. I also have another beta key if anyone wants it.

At the time of their recording some weeks back, I think PCG said classes cost around $7.50.

That sounds about right Cyrax. It took about 5 hours of gameplay to hit 1200 tokens for me which means 40 hours of gameplay roughly to unlock one of the 9800 token characters. Or... 8 bucks.

That's ridiculous. It might be free to play but certainly not feasible to FTP.

Edwin, I used the key Sygnus-X sent me, so you can send yours to someone else.

Isn't that kind of the assumption here? F2P is set up to give you a taste at free to try to hook you into buying things. If you really want to keep it free, you have to really work at it to unlock useful things that you could buy quickly.

How else are they going to cover development costs?

I'm kind of interested in this. There are four shooters coming soon (Tribes Ascention, Firefall, Super Monday Night Combat, and Blacklight Retribution) that all look like promising games.

And they're all FtP. Amazing.

I'm in the Blacklight beta, but haven't been able to play much because of a video issue that either will cause the game to freeze, or worst case freeze my rig. Might re-check it with yesterday's update. Excuse the tangent.

Thing is this game is worth 20 bucks easy, the issue is unlike in TF2 those that do buy the classes have a HUGE advantage over the basic classes. Already you see teams running Juggernauts and pathfinders that can totally shut down a base with the one hit kill fusion mortars.

I'm in as Certis.

oilypenguin (come on, obviously).

In as Inzpire

So I forgot how much I loved to play Tribes.

I was even downloading the ToR client (again. Thanks, EA!) during one of my games so my ping was 250 and I had to lead my shot for half a mile. It felt like 12 years ago =)

There is a difference between "giving you a taste" and "its almost impossible to grind this out, why not give us money instead? hint hint". Just imagine what FTP DDO would have been like if it followed that system. "So you grinded 40 hours! Now you can play a paladin!".

MannishBoy wrote:

I would be more worried about maintaining server populations. If no one is playing the game, no one is going to buy the game. When this comes out I'll play a couple hours because its Tribes and all that. But if those couple hours fail to hook me I'm uninstalling this from my computer and not paying them a cent. If too many people follow that pattern then this shiny new FTP Tribes game is going to sink faster than a lead titanic. Hopefully it won't end up like Tribes 2 with zero new blood.

Make that five. You forgot Planetside. (thought "soon" is arguable)

It is free, it is Tribes, it is fun. It will not fail. Additionally (like it's necessary), I'm not aware of a single FtP game that has failed that's not niche.

I do agree that the time investment for unlocking classes right now is absurd. But, they've lowered some of the costs of classes so not all are valued equally. They're probably doing this now so that people who didn't buy into the beta can try out other classes, or they want to suggest a class balance monetarily, and they will certainly do this after launch, conceivably just like how LoL has weekly discounts. They've also implemented a "First Win of the Day" bonus to XP and tokens dependent on how well you did in that map, making leveling and tokens easier to obtain.

Right now at LvL 5 (1/2), I have 1655k tokens, which I'd estimate was around 3-4 hours of gameplay. I've played more, but disconnecting so much earlier in the beta didn't allow me to retain my progress. I also get a tiny token boost for being a VIP playing on the open servers. Basically, I progress faster by default. Right now, normal classes are 9800 tokens, and discount classes are 3600 and 1800. So, maybe ~20 hours to unlock a high value class. But, it's still beta.
