On the one hand: Cool!

On the other hand: We clearly do not know how Tribes is meant to be played.

How so?

I think it's referring to this

I am a representative from the Tribes 2 competition community. www.teamwarfare.com - I have been playing Tribes since I was 13 for over 10 years. And it is the only game that I continue to enjoy and learn about.

I mean no disrespect. But none of you, none, have any concept of what Tribes is. It is an incredibly difficult game that has a high learning curve. Nobody wants to admit that they are an average person that couldn't understand "vehicles weapons and flags". On the surface, the game seems to be an easy thing to understand, its just a video game. But when you get really good at the game you will realize what Tribes gameplay really is. An incredibly difficult and fun blend of skill, speed, and strategy. Its kept me interested for over 10 years. I am still a student of the game.
...

Indeed. Although I mangled my quote.

Wow.... Really? That's a bit extreme. I doubt we will see this guy in a free to play Tribes.

Looks like Hi-Rez is going with a 'League of Legends' approach to Tribes: Ascend, getting you to buy loadouts.

I don't play LoL in part because I don't like that approach. Sell me the game via a demo, then get out of my wallet. Then get off my lawn, you kids.

I'm also not a fan of the free to play model unless it's done right. Sounds like selling load outs is the worse way to go about it.

They should of gone the Team Fortress route where they just sell hats and weapons that you can have just by playing.

FTP = free to suck. I want a game where we can run our own servers without interference.

When they're building the game around extracting cash from you AFTER you start playing, instead of before, it f*cks everything up.

Why'd they make it look like Halo?

And, isn't Tribes 2 already free? I'm pretty sure I got it for free for that play-date thing. Also, maybe I just didn't have any concept of what Tribes is but I didn't like it very much.

edit: Damn it, Hypatian already made that joke. That's what I get for not actually reading the thread before I post.

Once you learned how to "ski", you were MASTAR!

Yeah, I came in here to beat that dead horse as well.

Here's a video:

Oh, fun! I'll be there.

FtP, good, that means I can try it. I never had too high of an opinion of Tribes, and especially not so after the playdate. Sure, I don't/didn't know what I was doing (how to play), but a super-fast FPS only seems to appeal to me in video format.

I like the look of that.

EDIT: Youtube commenters are cute and apparently young enough to still smell like milk:

Blatant copy of Section 8: Prejudice. Will not buy.

And even if it weren't a wrong statement to begin with, Section 8 is so slow compared to this.

Well, while we're doing the whole video posting thing:

As someone who plays Section 8 and rather likes it, to call a new Tribes game a copy of Section 8 is clearly out of their mind. And yes, Tribes is way faster, as Total Biscuit mentions.

I saw this at PAX. It looks amazing and the gameplay seems pretty slick. You can actually fly the damn shrike!

Well, it's getting to the stage where a lot of games like Tribes was out before a lot of current internet dwellers were born. It doesn't make them less wrong, just ignorant.

Heh, like someone just called Deus Ex 3 a clone of Alpha Protocol.

I guess it's like music or films. Does that mean that gaming is 'established' now?

Anybody pay to get in the beta of this? I'm tempted. Tribes 2 was, until Gears of War, my favorite multiplayer game.

Got my beta email.

I owned one of the original games back when, but never really played a lot of it. So this is more of a new game to me vs a lot of Tribes vets around.

Anybody play on a regular basis yet? I see there's a channel in Vent.

I try to play at least 30 minutes a night. I'd play more if I wasn't getting constant disconnects. Besides that technical issue, I really enjoy Ascend. I couldn't really connect with the play style of Tribes on the GWJ play date we had last year. About 10 minutes after the tutorial in Ascend I had a good grip of the mechanics and physics behind them. For any newcomer, I'd thoroughly recommend the Jumper class. He has the best maneuverability, or "feel", of any class imo. With the last patch they made it possible to try any class when you use the practice mode.

I watched Total Biscuit's YouTube clip of this and my interest went from zero to maxed out. Is it worth paying for the beta though? Or should I wait through this soft launch for actual release?

And how fast is the in-game curve curve? In League of Legends you can kind of estimate how long until you have enough in game currency to buy a new character. Anything similar here?

Think he also has a Gamescom clip as well.

After watching the TotalBiscuit video above last week, I decided what the Hell and bought the pre-order pack. I never got into Tribes back in the day but this looks like a ton of fun and I was willing to take the shot. I was given extra beta keys because I bought in so the first two Goodjers who PM me get them. Would love to try this with some people.

I did the same as Parallax after watching that video, I also have a couple of beta keys as well and I do look forward to playing this with Goodjers.
