Giant Bomb Bomb-All

Yeah, wow, he really sounds like he's at the end of his rope.

I am still blown away by the Letter of the Year award. Such a wonderful way to start the GOTY Discussion.

I haven’t listened but is this like the Apology of the Year award from 2014ish?

Nope. Literally, like "F" or "E" or "Z".

Some of those letters just don't hang.

Am I missing something? Inside joke with Giant Bomb? Why would Jeff liking that game signify that he's depressed or something?

I don't quite get that either. He has spent a significant amount of time talking about that game. That doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Yeah people saying "He likes that game? Must be depressed" is deeply weird. He's talked about it a ton on the podcast and has clearly been having a great time with it in most ways. He has criticisms of one part of it, and the rest of it he seems stoked about.

When I got to his number 1 my reaction was "Oh right, of course!"

Well at least I can be sure that the GWJ letter of the year would be P.

I also think it's reasonable to give a game a 4/5 on release but grow to like it more as time goes on.

That said, there is some validity in how much he whines about games being stale/unoriginal all the time, and then casually dismisses tons of games within seconds only to gravitate towards whatever the latest AAA shooter is.

The validity would be that he prefers AAA shooters, not assuming that he's depressed or burned out, right? I'm with the others in not understanding the connection between his game preferences and making assumptions on his personal life.

Yeah, just saying that's the reason I started to drop my attention and subscription to GB in the first place. The clincher was when he played Destiny almost non-stop for months while complaining constantly about it, while at the same time casually dismissing tons of indies without even looking at them. It made the podcast unbearable.

I don't think anyone can make any assertions on the mental well-being of someone you only know through video game podcasts.

I resemble this comment and I don't like it. I'm someone that will spend hundreds of hours playing a game and hate it whenever I'm not playing it. See all my hours in Overwatch, Marvel Heroes , and currently Super Auto Pets. I also almost always dismiss any game that calls itself or gets called indie, especially if it gets a lot of love.

As a J-name person, I approve of this year's letter win.

I simply think his melancholy runs deep and his 2021 GOTY list pretty much exemplifies that. "Yeah...games. Yeah, stuff. Yeah."

Each to their own, I think he's been burned out for a long while now but it's his career, ya know?

It had very little to do from him picking Infinite, though that was Iso's initial point. His whole list feels ho hum, which is more what I was alluding to.

Or that could have something to do with:

The release cadence and quality of video games felt a little herky-jerky all year. Many of the big games were things that had been delayed into their eventual 2021 release window, and a lot of stuff launched in weird states of not-quite-ready. The video game industry's transition to working from home happened in 2020, and things were probably smoother by 2021, but... not the sort of thing you'd actually call "smooth."

On the GOTY stuff, he has seemed very much not melancholy. Personally, the Venn diagram of my tastes and Gerstmann's is practically 2 separate circles barely connected by the words "Mortal" and "Kombat." However, I appreciate his measured perspective, largely appropriately adversarial to the industry at large. He was ten-thousand percent correct about Fallout 4.

Jan earned moment of the year twice in the same moment. Maybe three times if you want to count each strap individually.

What do the giant bomb people mean when they say "tip". " I'm on a game boy tip" or "not my tip"

I'm guessing it's an American thing? In the UK a tip is where you put rubbish, ie a rubbish tip.

"Tip" in that context just means that it's a thing you're into or feeling at the moment.

"I'm on a game boy tip" = I'm currently really into playing game boy games (or just into the game boy console itslef)

"Not my tip" = That's not something I like.

Man Jeff really doesn't like Dying light 2.

I decided to look back at a game he loves for comparisons sake.

I remember him reaming Guardians of the Galaxy as well, a game that people have really seemed to love. I would say with all of the changes around Giant Bomb, his increased involvement has been one of my least favorite. Which is weird, I liked him on Beast quite a bit.

Just to clarify: Jeff Bakalar

I honestly thought you were talking about Gerstmann.

Personally, I love the mix of personalities and differences in opinions. That’s one of the reasons I always enjoyed the East Coast more than the West Coast. The West Coast always seemed more… stuck in their ways, for lack of a better term. I appreciate the contrasting viewpoints and finding myself agreeing with different people at different times.

Totally agree. I always had much more fun with East, while West seemed to like what they liked and there wasn't a ton of wiggle room. At least you'd have an Abby in there talking about Nancy Drew or what have you. It just seemed like a more diverse, eclectic group of opinions.

I haven't quite finished the last podcast, but I've really enjoyed all the GB game of the year discussions.

MinnMax, Easy Allies, and Nextlander are currently giving me what Giantbomb used to.

That new GB theme is really not easy on the ears.

Nope. It's horrible. It might be the last of the thousand cuts for me, honestly.

I dig it. Bored of the regular theme I guess.

I find it absolutely atrocious but it’s only a few second at the beginning.

I think it sounds like 2021.

I was really pleased to hear people willing to bat for Guardians of the galaxy.

Yeah, I'm with you. It sounds fine to me, pretty standard glitch music, imo.

I was enjoying a "Best of giant bomb" video and they included an ALBUMMER clip and suddenly all the joy and light was sucked out of the room.

The new Arcade Pit episodes have been hilarious. Looking forward to more shenanigans.

GT7 Quick Look is up, Jeff is lukewarm on the game (quelle surprise!!!)
The lack of a 'sim nerd' staff member is evident.

I say this with love for the guy, but what exactly does Jason do?

When they still had an actual office that needed behind-the-scenes production it made sense, but now that they are a website for Zoom/Skype calls, I don't know what Jason does. Jan seems to be the one that runs the podcast technical duties.

Jason doesn't offer a lot during any of the podcasts either.
