Giant Bomb Bomb-All

But if they're just going to roll over because of persistence (Brad, I'm looking at you and your bullsh*t Destiny nuclear option) that doesn't speak very well of their editorial process or credibility.

It's a war of attrition, and I can see Dan easily getting Death Stranding on the list simply because the rest of the crew wants him to shut up. It's like the infamous Destiny Defense but less articulate.

(This is assuming that Death Stranding isn't a good game, or is a good game but the story makes no f*cking sense so the rest of the group doesn't really enjoy it since they have no idea why they are even playing. My bet is on the latter.)

It's pretty impressive that this thread can debate Death Stranding's worth as a GOTY contender and Giant Bomb's reasoning for supporting and opposing its inclusion on the GOTY list when the game isn't even out yet and none of the staff has actually played it or had a chance to express an informed opinion about it

That’s either an indictment of this thread or Giant Bomb.

Mark my words: Brad's defense of Destiny 3 will be unforgivable.

I've been a Ryckert apologist for years. His affable idiot character (IS IT?) has a place and leads to some good jokes.

But I reached my limit with that podcast after what feels like hour 27 of Kojima love from him this calendar year.

In his defense, I think if Death Stranding isn't good, he won't die on that hill. But his criteria may simply be he doesn't like how it plays (see RDR2).

I'm looking forward to cutting my Dan time down to e3 and goty. That's probably the right amount of Dan.

I'll miss you Vinny, Abby, and Alex.

We're just preempting it now so in December we can just quote what we already said. Saves time!

Let's be real, unless the game is absolute and utter trash, it will absolutely be at least discussed, if not a main contender for one of the categories.

But no one's talking about Death Stranding's worth as a GOTY contender. We're talking about Dan's absolute and demonstrated Kojima fanboy-ism as well as and past examples where one person's obsessive love for a game has led to hours-long stalemates during the GOTY discussion.

Death Stranding could be anywhere from incomprehensibly terrible to gloriously revelatory and I'd still be willing to bet Dan will defend it to an absurd degree. Whether that means getting it on the GOTY list at all, getting it to the TOP of the GOTY list, or trying to keep it off one of the Most Disappointing categories is immaterial to the feeling of "Oh Jesus Christ, this bit will be a sh*t show."

It took me a second to figure out if Russell was some in-joke and then I realized it's Abby.

That's my foible, it just seems more respectful since there's already a need to differentiate Gerstmann from Bakalar.

I'm glad others found "It's not about politics, it's about (the political act of) war!" really bone-headed, because....yeah, Jesus...

I would say these awards are largely meaningless so I'm not sure why people get so bent out of shape over them. If it's just about dragging down the quality of the podcasts for a week of conversations you don't really enjoy then it would seem there would be an obvious solution to that. I skipped half of them myself last year when they lingered on conversations I didn't really care about.

The "I didn't think it was political because it isn't about real people" this last Beastcast wasn't much better.

If we're only going to talk about meaningful things we should lock down this thread and most of this board.

Dan is too dumb to make any sort of cohesive argument on his own that others won't brush off and tell him to sit in the corner. Especially if he has no support.

Besides, Death Stranding will be deceivingly light on story and character and most be a Norman Reedus model slowly walking through a barren open-world. Dan is under the impression that Sony gave him unlimited money while Jeff stated on the Bombcast that isn't true and this game has a decently modest budget with a timeline. Kojima has to make good on this game in order to command a larger investment on his next.

At the same time, this sort of thinking is so widespread, I can barely hold it against him.

See, we're discussing the poor understanding of "politics" in wider culture. Serious business. Also, this isn't sarcasm, I mean it.

I mean really, there's multiple meanings when people say politics. Dan is essentially saying that he realized there were literal political things in it like government, politicians, war, but less that there was a specific political message in it. Still kinda dumb, but not everyone goes into every piece of media looking at the meaning. I doubt the majority of people going out to see action movies are thinking about the subtle messages in those films, they want funny lines and big explosions and there's nothing wrong with that.

Dan does need to put some more thought into the issues in some of the media he's into though, like the weird creepy sexism in MGS.

God that was annoying.

Naw, he conceded those things when called out on them. It was spectacularly dumb, and coupled with his alleged love of the series and its creator, he really showed his ass.

Listening to old Bombcasts - Ryan and Patrick era. Ryan is still really good at being an MC. Brad is okay but man Ryan could throw in a quick comment and turn on to another topic. Jeff was less saltier too.

He was and always will be the best.

You would thing that, after all these years, I would be tired of Lockdown.

Never.

If you value your ears or your time, don't bother listening to My First E3 Three Episode 1. They recorded it during dinner and you hear lots of gross chewing sounds and Ben talking with his mouth full. About halfway through the episode Jeff comments to Abby and Ben about how much people hate it when you eat while recording a podcast, which just prompts them to eat more aggressively. It is gross and bad, and doing it intentionally as some sort of ironic joke doesn't make it any better. Also, not that My First E3 was every especially substantive, but there was nothing worthwhile in here, no funny jokes, no sincere discussion, no chatting with some person we don't usually hear from. It was my misfortune to set this as my morning commute listening this morning so that I wasn't in a place where I could safely switch to something else.

ear prison

I have great respect and sympathy for the misophonic among us, and I certainly second the recommendation to stay away if that's you.

However, as a person who isn't particularly bothered by such things, I thought it was exactly in line with the fun, light hearted behind the scenes/slice of life stuff they've done on that particular podcast over the past two years.

You can always tell when Jeff is excited about a game or angry about something because there is a filter in his head that malfunctions and he uses the "f" word constantly. In describing playing the Doom Eternal demo he uses the term "f*cking" every 4th word. No real point I'm making, just a funny observation after fifteen years listening to him.

I noticed that too right as I walked by my three-year old as I was getting a drink...

Yeah, I definitely have to be careful with my almost three year old. On our weekend shopping trip, I used to listen to podcasts in the car over the speakers, but got tired of having to pre-check what ones were up next to make sure none of the swear-y ones were coming up. Even at double speed, I don't trust that he wouldn't pick something up.

Now, I just put in one of my wireless ear buds for the drive, and turn on the radio for him.

Dan, the self-described major Zelda and Nintendo fan, said that Link's Awakening is the second worst Zelda.

I can't.

It’s a valid assessment.

Link's Awakening has a special place in my heart, but having replayed it within the past year, it's a little rough to go back to. Part of that's due to the limitations of the system-- having only two buttons means a LOT of menu time switching items, and the non-scrolling screens means the Peggy Boots doesn't improve the pace of play nearly as much as in ALTTP-- but some of it isn't.

Whoever designed Eagle's Tower can take the next bus directly to the center of the sun.

I can think of at least three that are demonstrably worse, though.
