Giant Bomb Bomb-All

Just a PSA, I noticed that the Giant Bomb Aftershow is being seeded into the Giant Bomb Presents RSS feed. It's Jeff & Ben taking online questions & live calls immediately following the weekly Bombcast recording session. Usually runs about an hour or so.

Free to Subscribe to on iTunes, etc. Quite enjoying it thus far.

Does anyone know if Jeff made it to Pax, or more importantly, how his wife is doing?

1. His wife is ok, "it's benign". According to this announcement on Twitter.
2. He's going to PAX.

Yea!

I've watched all of them including today's.

I'm caught up now. Yeah, pretty much exactly as expected.

Spoiler:

Maybe once they lose this game, they just move straight on to XCOM 2. Since it'd be canon then.

I read the comments of today's Ryckert episode and it sounds like another doozy. Almost scared to watch it. lol

Oh lord.

It actually managed to make me mad. Not fun.

Ha! I like the rotation. Alex is very capable, Abby tries, but is inexperienced, and I'm pretty sure Dan is a tool of the aliens.

You all got me going into that with the right mindset, so thanks. I was expecting something much more petty and vindictive that what happened, which looked to me (not knowing X-Com at all) the sort of sad and pathetic thing you've been hoping that one guy in your tabletop group would grow out of since you were both 22.

For someone who, I don't know if this is common knowledge, really likes wrestling, he doesn't seem to understand how "heeling" actually works.

This is the stuff behind a paywall, right. As curious as I am I dumped my subscription *because* of Dan.

Eh, that wasn't nearly as bad as his previous outing.

He played better, but his awful behavior has hit the tipping point. I mean...the thing is, this is a riff on an exquisite corpse, right? What Dan is doing with trashing the squad is almost exactly antithetical to that. What's next--the neat little side thing that Swery is doin' work goes away because another Dan Ryckert gets killed so it's time to rename him to Dan Ryckert, too? I don't feel like he's treating it as a group effort, but rather as something where "he" has to shine or it's Not Fun For Him. It's super frustrating and while I'm probably a GB lifer (my subscription goes through like 2020 or something) I'm pretty close to noping out on Dan Ryckert build-his-brand content.

I'm reminded of that D&D game they tried to run...

It's basically a version of one of the four Ryckert jokes, but just to slake your curiosity, in their series where they all trade off playing the same X-Com save:

Spoiler:

They all made units based off themselves, which, natch, get killed. Ryckert started the latest ep by selecting the highest ranked remaining unit, and recreated himself, and tried to recreate another of himself over the Brad unit. He played, like his last session, doing stupid stuff for the sake of protecting his unit, and then gave his unit a bunch of consumables at the end.

It wasn't funny, it was childish and weak, and no one can blame Ed for noping out, or you for noping out, because it's just a drag.

People are all over him in the GB comments section too. It will be interesting to see if it's a wakeup call for Dan that the act is starting to annoy people to the point where they are considering tuning out.

Reading these comments, it makes me wonder how Giantbomb performance reviews are done. Does game performance count? Is Jeff ever going to have to take Dan aside and have a conversation about his professional behavior while playing a video game? I bet their job introduces some odd HR scenarios.

There was one comment by Ben, I believe, about their "Face to Face" meetings which he described as a weekly performance review.

It's interesting that a GB mod is leading the "this isn't cool" movement in that comment thread.

Jeff knows who Dan is, and more importantly, knew the insanity that is his essence before they hired him. I remember Jeff and Ryan talking about him multiple times in the early days of the site.

If Dan was doing something wrong, Jeff would have told him by now. He's the ultimate heel, even if it annoys multiple people (including me).

I wonder if the audience finally getting fed up with it and starting to skip content with Dan is enough to get him to have a chat with our boy.

Or it could turn out that this is all bluster and internet yelling, and their subscription and view counts stay the same.

Jeff and Brad (with some Ben help) went deep on that turd PewDiePie in today's Bombcast. That was a good take.

That's pretty shocking. If not for Alex they would have completely glossed over the Palmer Luckey stuff during their GOTY shows last year.

This past year has shown many, who previously preferred silence, that remaining silent actually speaks volumes.

Jeff pretty much copped to exactly that in today's show.

These are indeed trying times. Both Dan and Jeff have made strong anti-Trump tweets recently, which was shocking since they both seemed to try to have completely apolitical social media presences for as long as I can remember.

These days I feel like if they don't speak their views people will simply speak for them, and attribute whatever beliefs they want to project on to them. You see it on the GB comments all the time.

Jeff has been adamant about GB as a whole not taking a firm political stand on things. I understand that choice, it's easier to ascribe something to a personality-driven site and stick around if they're a blank slate. They've commented a few times on things and you could kind of infer where they stood.

But that's how bad things have gotten, Jeff's turned.

Which I think is great.

I am often reminded of this from Jeff Dot Zone. (Also note the hilarious username of the asker.)

He's a little more succinct this time around.

Holy sh*t.

New Jeff is pretty great.
