Giant Bomb Bomb-All

I removed the Bombcast from my podcast list today. Not any big reason, I just finally released myself from my OCD of needing to know what the guys are up to all the time. I still have the Beastcast and watch videos, but I've lessened that as well. I feel lighter, free, like the world is my oyster. I am the oyster king.

I have traded the Bombcast off for the Critical Role podcast... I've been wanting that for awhile since I could never get around to the youtube videos/ twitch streams.

I'll probably come back again as I tend to do.

Felt the same way when I stopped listening to GWJ.

...

Yeah, I did that too as well as Idle Thumbs. I just realized that my favourite avenue for learning about games is Giant Bomb videos, and all the journalists/critics I've collected on Twitter. I don't need hours and hours and hours every month of the same information presented by different people.

I think part of this is that I switched my goofy comedy podcast priority over to MBMBaM and The Adventure Zone. The McElroy brothers keep their stuff short enough that it's manageable.

I'm getting deja vu to the games podcasts thread re: Weekend Confirmed. XD

Did Dan ruin that too?

A podcast hosted by Garnett Lee doesn't need Dan to ruin it.

Dan is one of the four things keeping me listening to the Beastcast.

Yeah, I'm the same way for most of my gaming podcasts, although I kept Idle Thumbs since they tend to focus on different material. Part of it is just that my interest in gaming has waned significantly. But most of it is, like you say, no matter how much I like the personalities, there's so much more material I could be listening to instead of dozens of takes on the exact same games and game news.

I don't listen to gaming podcasts anymore.

They should revise Spookin With Scoops with Abby. She reacts so well and is so funny, it would be nice if she could play even good horror games.

Watched the newest Exquisite Corps. The intro was fantastic. Watching them play was incredibly painful. Basic stuff like

Spoiler:

Alex needing to capture a sectoid, having a sectoid with 1hp left within single movement range, allowing for an easy capture, and he has the soldier with the arc thrower shoot it instead, then later runs the arc thrower right next to a full health sectoid and goes for the stun. Skipping grabbing the meld container because they seemed to think grabbing it would have ended their turn instead of being a free action. Taking a long range shot because they hadn't realized that you can move then shoot, but not shoot then move.

I really wish they'd had someone who knew how to play in Vinny's role so they could be more of a guide on the basics, instead of having the two of them constantly fumbling around for stuff like "how do I change targets?"

I'm not sure if this is more or less frustrating than watching Drew run around the Platform E forever, but it's right up there.

Poor Pvt Degeneres' death lies solely on the heads of her commanders.

Huh, I'm starting to have to actively avoid Dan content. For quite awhile he had toned things down, but I've encountered 3 videos/podcasts or so lately where I had to just turn it off. He seems to have turned his ignorance card up to 11 lately. He's also been really stressing his taste in games where anything with story and characters is bad.

He had toned things down pretty well for like a year there. I don't know what it is as of late. Maybe it's just me and being frustrated with ignorant people as of late.

No, it's Dan. He's terrible.

In the days when he was with Game Informer he made some really entertaining stuff. They were a bit more buttoned down in style though plus Tim Turi was somehow able to keep Dan under control. Dan's Half Life Super Replay was pretty hilarious at times. Now Dan is just this dervish of chaos and the content is suffering for it.

I agree, he's suddenly come back to his ignorant stance hard with the Wal-Mart and such. He needs people to remind him that he's being like Paul.

As for the story thing. I don't think he's been saying story games are bad, just that story is not what pulls him into games, so if a game is all story, there is no appeal. I think that's fine. I mostly ignore story in games except for rare exceptions where it's good. I don't even give most games a chance anymore, if they're not respecting my time with good dialogue in the first 3-4 sentences, then I won't ever read another sentence in their game. Not worth my time to read an elementary school story.

Still enjoying Exquisite Corps, and loved the recap, but I agree with Chaz, it was so frustrating to watch them screw up so many basic things. I'm not usually bothered when they're bad at games, but something about the turn based strategy game format makes their blunders particularly excruciating.

Don't make me agree with Dan, but man video game stories are a low damn bar.

...did Brad offer up Guns & Roses as a corrective to the glamy metal horsesh*t of L.A.? If so, that's...insane.

I don't take Dan seriously enough to be annoyed by him. I'm seriously far more bothered by how bad everyone is at all these games. It's frustrating but also something that we've all discussed before in this thread ad nauseam. Then I watch the Mega Man feature where they're just shooting the sh*t for a couple of hours and I remember why I love Giant Bomb. *shrug*

Whoever came up with the Ken Burns' Civil War style recap idea for The Exquisite Corps deserves a raise. Even if it was Dan.

It's clever, so it seems unlikely that it was Dan.

True. I don't think Abby's going to have much competition for whose are the most funny though.

I'm still firmly behind Rorie, or anything he is in. Yes, he has a patented ability to not pay attention. Yes, he cannot focus on even the broad details of whatever is being played at the moment, and will then rehash something that was just said to the exasperation of the rest of the crew (especially Jeff)... but GOD DAMN IT, it's so perfect and I swear he does it on purpose.

On a somewhat related note, Kingdom Hearts sucks y'all, and this new series is reminding me of why I thought all my friends in high school were crazy.

This week's Bombcast featured basically the same discussion about satellite radio and the Guns n Roses station that they had just a few weeks ago, and the same conversation about the Sonic ISP they have every few months or so. Generally I like their free-ranging non-video game discussions but at least this week I'm starting to think it wouldn't hurt to make things a little tighter.

Fair warning: Dan is in full heel mode in Exquisite Corps Part 3. Spoilers ahoy:

Spoiler:

I really hope he was putting on an act, cuz man, the whole "I want me to be safe", and then carelessly leaving everyone standing around in the middle of nowhere, not paying attention to where aliens were thing was pretty over the top.

I was actually kind of pleased when his "me first" routine resulted in complete and utter failure. I don't know that people were leveled up enough that losing two KIA and one seriously wounded will be a mortal setback to the overall run, but it won't be a help.

Really looking forward to Abby's reaction to the sh*t pile that Dan left for her.

Thesis: Dan is the Donald Trump of Exquisite Corps.

Yeah, that was the highest extreme of Dan mode I've seen yet. That video is pretty much the culmination of this entire thread(they suck at videogames, Dan sucks).

Yeah, that wasn't even fun. I skipped to the end maybe two moves into the actual mission. "Oh, he screwed it up, of course he did."

Between that and the PUBG mess, I'm starting to go from "watch pretty much everything they do" to "watch almost no GBEast content because Dan's in it." (The MatterFall video was good, and Dan was in it--but Dan was being an idiot while Vinny and Abby were being cool.)

I don't hate Dan like a lot of people do but I do think he meshed better with the GB west crew. Going from Austin to Dan on GB East is quite the turnaround. I really miss the Austin, Vinny, & Alex dynamic.
