Baldur's Gate 3 Catch-All

Had an amusing glitch/mistake. Trying to hide a secret and it requires a diplo roll of 21 or higher. Passed cause bards are broken. Later conversations just continue like I told them regardless.

I think they honestly forgot that someone would pass.

Or there is simply a bug in the conversation logic. It happens.

Only Glitch I noticed is when a couple of my party members mentioned Gale.

I never ran into him in this playthrough.

The chatter here and among coworkers was enough to get me to cave and pick this up.

Given my extreme lack of free time I will optimistically be able to play maybe 15 minutes a day, which has me finishing my first run through in…June? We shall see.

Now to fire up the character creator and spend the next week deciding who to be.

Keep in mind that picking your race and background has only a small impact on the playthrough and for the strength of your character. You can still "win" the game playing a gnome barbarian even though optimally you'd be slightly easier playing something like a half orc. So I'd say pick a race and background that interests you and just work on playing through.

I keep seeing people in this thread saying they are still in Act 1 because they didn't like their class and have restarted multiple times. If you don't like the class, you can "respec" at camp after meeting a certain character very early (like just after starting on the mainland) so there's no reason really to restart.

I hit level 12 almost as soon as I entered Act 3 and I've rerolled my main character at least 4 times when I find an interesting artifact or just want to try something new. I started as a Paladin, then went Hexblade, then went Bardadin, now I'm a Barlockadin! Getting to max level opens up a whole new game with regards to character min/maxing.

A lot of time (at least in my case), those restarts are less about respects and more about getting a feel for the game and how it reacts to your decisions and wanting a redo in your approach to narrative choices.

I never ran into him in this playthrough.

Give him a hand everybody!

Works fine for me but some enemies seem to have very high save rolls. I have the same issue with the

Spoiler:

See Invisibility potion

Seems to work for me - but keep in mind its not a super-long range.

It is also a line of sight cone more than likely. At least that is how dark vision works.

A bard at the circus

Spoiler:

Everyone was talking up Dribbles the Clown as the main attraction ... and you can get clown makeup from the Mummy ... I thought this was building up to either impersonating or replacing Dribbles. Sadly, no. (Not yet anyway)

I look like a Juggalo now tho LOL

Sorry, it's a variation of very stupid meme from a very stupid song by some other clowns.

Ahhh! Thank you.

Your joke went over my head. I may know what Juggalos look like but I don't actually know any ICP songs.

Well, well into Act 2 now on my second run, and going to Moonrise Towers before you find the Nightsong certainly makes one hell of a difference, that's all I'm saying.

It's really gratifying to see just how different it is this second playthrough. Playing as The Dark Urge who is struggling to contain their urge

Spoiler:

Sometimes I give into it, and I've just made the Goblins left from the camp slaughter themselves

adds one of the best role play experiences I've had in a PC game - it really does feel like they've accounted for that in what they have written, at least so far.

My 10 yo son and I found the barn in Act 1. I did not know what was in the barn beforehand.

Spoiler:

Dad, what’ does ‘rutting’ mean?
I was stammering an answer then he said ‘were they fighting?’’ And yep we’ll go with that

I watched the credits roll (and the scene after them) tonight. Amazing stuff. Stays good all the way to the end.

I have so many more thoughts, but I don't want to spoil people!

Completed House of Grief in the haze of COVID recovery.

Spoiler:

As you can guess, if you listened to my Baldur's Gate 1&2 recap, Viconia was a character I was anticipating could show up. I was utterly flat-footed when she did show up as the Matron of the Shar enclave. I had just done the Stone Lord stuff, so I had Jaheira and Minsc with me, which was nice for this beat. I spared her for old times' sake, let's hope that doesn't come back to bite me (other than the loss of the obviously terrific gear she must drop.) Shadowheart's choice at the end is pretty brutal, I let her make all the decisions and I loved the scene at camp afterwards where she just weeps. Jennifer English just knocks that scene out of the park. A satisfying button to that character's story. Sad, but satisfying. It definitely has me wondering what's in store for the other companions at the end of their threads.

Up next for me in Act 3 is Lae'zel. We need to find the way to the House of Hope next...

Getting in there isn't too bad, but make sure you bring your A team, and make sure they're loaded for bear.

The House of Grief and its leader was sad for me, given my

Spoiler:

playthrough in BG2 was to Romance Viconia and turn her away from evil. It's sad because if they didn't follow my personal canon, that stinks, but if they did, and she "died" but eventually lived, it means she went back to her darker ways.

For House of Hope, no Spoilers, but bring some Fire Resistance. Again, not exactly a spoiler since you are in fact, going to a house in hell, which tends to burn...

I have quite an interesting time this evening in Act II trying to

Spoiler:

rescue the Tieflings & gnomes in Moonrise towers dungeon.

The first time I tried to free them I got spanked - I hadn't really understood how it would work and - annoyingly - as soon as the gnomes escape, the entire dungeon guard come running if they've seen them and I got swamped thanks to some very annoying in game mechanics - seriously, can you never break concentration on enemy spell casters? - and my total lack of understanding of what was going on.

By the third attempt I'd scatter my party to cover both cells and judicious use of arrows / scrolls of darkness to cover the escape. It worked quite well and I managed to take out the two scrying eyes as well so they couldn't call in reinforcement, which made a huge difference. The only final annoyance was the first time I hid it all I dawdled going to the boat and two zealots some how jumped me and slaughtered all the gnomes and Tieflings there while I was too busy looting the dungeon office. Ooops.

It just reminds me - again - that Larian rarely set up a straight fight without other options to consider. It's funny I still keep getting this wrong, but I think it also goes to show that it really does occasionally pay to stop and think about what you are doing before you do it.

I think I am heading back in to my paladin after messing about with armored core and starfield.

Silly newb question: How do I use the shops? I have been trained by other games to pick up a bunch of junk and sell it to the nearest vender, but that doesn't seem like the play here. Is there no way to prophet from junk, and if not, can I just dump it somewhere and go forward being more judicious as I loot corpses?

So not everything you pick up has a lot of value. You also don’t meet the first ‘vendor’ in act 1 until you reach the Druid grove.

Specified vendors will trade or barter with you after a short dialog interaction. You can barter with a surprising number of NPCs in game though while chatting to them - if you can do this there’ll be a button down in the lower left of the screen that you’ll need to click to barter with them.

As a short rule of thumb, anything valued at 1gp isn’t worth trading. So don’t pick it up. Weapons are cheap but plentiful and good items early game, but tend to be quite heavy. Gems & jewellery are light and always worth pilfering. Magical gear is the highest value stuff in the game though - especially the rare and very rare items.

So long as you are exploring and opening every crate you can find you’ll accumulate enough stuff to sell (or straight pick up gold) to be able to afford most stuff you’ll need or want.

Pickpocketing - if you can handle how the game does this - is a very good way of getting more money but I always find it more aggro than it’s worth. The victim will always realise, and beeline to your thief and immediately accuse them of stealing. I’ve never really got my head around how it works. I find it not worth it to be honest, and I’ve never struggled to buy the items I want.

Yeah, I've made it to the grove and found several people willing to barter, but I have a ton of junk now. Sounds like I just need to be more selective with my looting and stick to food and valuables.

You can turn on straight trading, there's a toggle between "barter" and "trade". You can mark stuff in your inventories as "Wares" - with a vendor in "Trade" mode there is a button to "Sell All Wares" to easily dump all the junk.

If encumbrance is a problem, you can view everyone's inventory at once (TAB on PC), sort by weight and move heavier stuff you want to keep/sell later to your stronger party members. Last resort is to dump excess weapons and armor that have been picked up - they are very heavy and they are everywhere.

Follow Sorbicol's guidelines to stay out of trouble.

If you decide to pickpocket,

Spoiler:

obscure the vision of others with a spell or potion while you do it. That way, there will be no witnesses.

I'll also add that I am "pick up everything I can carry" guy. I ended the game with 30K+ gold... so you can be more judicious in looting and you won't be short on funds.
