Upcoming Indie Games to Keep an Eye On

Symphony will be available for download on August 6th from Steam, Origin, GameFly, GOG.com, and GameStop's Impulse.

More info at The Verge.

Cult: Awakening of the Old Ones - Reminds me a little of DF, but more of an RPG. 6 days left in the Kickstarter. Dev blog.

Not sure if this is strictly "indie", but a new naval game using the Mount & Blade engine warrants a post: Caribbean! (more info).

The game is developed by Snowbird Game Studios (creators of Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword title) in close cooperation with the developers of the original Mount & Blade game – TaleWorlds Entertainment. Using the improved Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword game engine, Caribbean! offers one of the most engaging melee battles system and advanced horse-riding mechanics, including some exciting new features:

* Sea battles with intuitive and easy control system;
* The real-time boarding fights that throw player in the centre of the action;
* Detailed management and customization of both the fleet and the crew;
* Complex siege system allowing the players to storm forts, harbors or entire cities;
* Different kinds of artillery: shipboard cannons, mortars and howitzers;
* Random events system that keeps players question their decisions during their voyage;
* True ‘Carribean’ atmosphere of the vast and dangerous world;
* Unique NPCs whose design based on the real historical figures;
* Various multiplayer modes featuring the sea and land battles, boarding and sieges.

Mount & Blade: Pirate Version? I can get behind that.

I am TOTALLY on board with Caribbean! Loooove age of sail stuff. Thanks ebarstad!

Platformines: Minecraft + Diablo + Borderlands + Terraria.

Good mash-up, but the gameplay doesn't excite me. At least they have an open beta to try out.

Unmechanical - coming to Steam on August 8

an adventure-puzzle game about an adorable but indifferent robot's quest to find its way out of the innards of an underground beast, and to find out what happened and why.

Simple and intuitive mechanics make the game accessible to highly varying groups of people and the mysterious style and setting will tickle your curiosity. Puzzles range from simple to hard and satisfying

Alright, I'm interested.

That soundtrack sounds eerily familiar, but in a good way.

You got my Trine in your Machinarium!

Looks pretty interesting.

Congratulations on your new Little Inferno Entertainment Fireplace!
Throw your toys into your fire, and play with them as they burn. Stay warm in there. It's getting cold outside!

Burn flaming logs, screaming robots, credit cards, batteries, exploding fish, unstable nuclear devices, and tiny galaxies. An adventure that takes place almost entirely in front of a fireplace - about looking up up up out of the chimney, and the cold world just on the other side of the wall.

Aren't we in an informative mood, today?

No, seriously, that also looks cool. I love me some World of Goo.

So, have any of the games in this thread come out yet?

Krater. Pitman was also just released in a new indie bundle-type thing.

Speaking of which: Gamedev Bundle - Made by a bunch of redditors. The games actually look quite interesting.

And then there's Botanicula, which was mentioned. And Legend of Grimrock.

On a quick count, I'd say the ratio is somewhere around 1:9.

The Real Texas which I mentioned earlier was already out when I mentioned it, so it was kind of cheating to even mention it in this thread.
There's been a recent-ish review of it on nightmaremode.

Project Ginshu

Project Ginshu (working title) is an independently produced first person open world strategy puzzle adventure game we are building. Set in an impossible universe, you explore, build, defend and plant as your character is on the way to a new home.

- Mystic Revelations: witness the unraveling of a visual acid trip through IMPOSSISPACE, filled with exotic shapes, geometric patterns and appropriate soundscapes, cocooned by the people who brought you Masagin.

- Build: connect countless prefabs to scaffold defense bases and living spaces.

- Explore: discover pre-made and generated places as the Cosmonaut travels through the Doubt Field, from asteroid clusters to floating skylabs, walking on ceilings and floating in zero gravity.

- Defend: defend your bases against the Mechenna, machine-like animals created to scare off unwanted visitors hoping to find Dora Do'El.

- Plant: farm tools, defenses and building material from plants and fungi - with care and attention, you may harvest fantastic yields.

- Invent: discover artifacts and use them to puzzle together new types of plants using your trusty ASAP (Autonomous Sequencer and Planter).

- Automate: assemble robot parts to create mobile assistants able to help with warning, harvesting, defending and building.

- Teslafy: maintain a balanced energy budget with power plants, solar panels, electric arc transmitters and megabatteries.

- Three game modes: Travel (play the story), Trip (play a quick round with a generated map) and Settle (open-ended play on a generated map).

I've got two very interesting looking games to share. I didn't see them posted anywhere when doing a search of the site. I posted about Papa & Yo in the PS+ awareness thread. The Papa & Yo dev diary is really, really cool. I'm sold. I definitely get a Guillermo del Toro vibe from the game.

Papa & Yo (PS3) -

weareminority.com wrote:

Papo & Yo is the story of a young boy, Quico, and his best friend, Monster. Monster is a huge beast with razor-sharp teeth, but that doesn't scare Quico away from playing with him. That said, Monster does have a very dangerous problem: an addiction to poisonous frogs. The minute he sees one hop by, he'll scarf it down and fly into a violent, frog-induced rage where no one, including Quico, is safe. And yet, Quico loves his Monster and wants to save him.

As Quico, players will build their friendship with Monster by solving puzzles together and adventuring through a magical, surrealist world. Players will need to learn to use Monster's emotions, both good and bad, to their advantage if they want to complete their search for a cure and save their pal.

Cradle (PC) -

cradle-game.com wrote:

Cradle is a science-fiction first-person quest with freedom of movement. The story is built around the relations of the protagonist and a mechanical girl, who by enigmatic circumstances find themselves together in a yurt among the desert Mongolian hills. The player is to restore the lost functions of his companion's mechanical body parts and together reveal the mystery of the neglected entertainment park found not far from the yurt.

Cradle sure is gorgious. Sounds like it's going for a Myst sensibility.

"Flying Cafe For Semianimals" is the best studio name ever.

Ha! I totally missed that. You are correct. That is an awesome name.

The Kickstarted for Castle Story (dev's website, check dev diaries for progress since early this year) just went live less than an hour ago and already has $15,000, with only a $80,000 target. I'm tempted by this one, as I've been following it for a while now.

I don't think I've seen this posted before:

"Worlds is an action / aventure / stealth game, which will plunge you in many strange worlds. The game offers a lot of liberty, and you'll find out that there often is more than one way to accomplish your missions..."

RPS wrote about it here.

Demo here.

The trailer makes me want to work on my low-fi Deus Ex inspired cyberpunk corporate espionage game idea...

Yikes! I see it crossed $150,000 already. I'll probably back it once the next payday rolls around.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare - a first-person medieval combat game.

Played this at PAX East, fun little game. More bloody than War of the Roses.

Talked to one of the guys in the booth and he told a cool thing about their engine: The hit zone is all along your weapon; so you can get glancing blows on people. They also have siege type games play with different siege equipment that can be used (no idea if War of the Roses has any of that).

Will be keeping an eye on it.

I stand by my Front Page post yesterday. It's a great time in gaming.
