Yeah, when I was a kid back in the '70s, The Monkees tv show was in regular syndicated afternoon rotation. I remember coming home every day after school and watching The Monkees and Gilligan's Island. I likely know most all of their songs by heart as a direct result.
Here's a couple faves that don't get as much airplay.
I always liked "Steppin' Stone". But nothing beats "Last Train to Clarksville." They were so much better than a band manufactured for a goofy TV show had any right to be.
I saw the Monkee's in concert last year. This makes me sad. I'd tell my 4 year old (who was at the concert and loved it) but a) he doesn't need to know and b) he's been kind of obsessed with death lately.
The Monkees' Greatest Hits was the first album I ever had as a kid in the 70s. The TV show theme song talked about how they'd "maybe come to your town." and I remember being bummed out to learn that they'd been broken up as a band for years already.
When there's only one left, does the song change to "Hey, hey, I'm the Monkee"?
Only at night, when he's crying alone in his bedroom, you jerk.
When I was a kid the people who grew up with the Monkees were the right age to have the positions of power at networks to syndicate it and re-run it. I watched that show hundreds of times after school. Now, at 34, I couldn't tell you the plot to even a single episode, although I do enjoy their music.
Wow, I can't believe that this happened. I loved the show and their music is better than what I expected for a TV show.
Aw, man.
I love the Monkeys.

That sucks. My mother used to think this guy was hotter than all four of the Beatles combined.

Sad day.

I like it when they made good music.

Really sad. These are my personal favorites. Thanks to my mom's childhood crush, I heard them a lot growing up.
Man they looked like they were having fun as a band.

Another reason I'm headed for the special hell:

Stone thongs are almost as important to preventing the spread of elves as lead toys are.

If you strike me down, I shall become more fabulous than you can possibly imagine.
Quite sad indeed.
