FTL

I don't know if I like this game; it always takes a lot longer than I think it has, so I'm tired a lot these days...

Had a rough run last night where I lost 5 guys on boarding parties. First was my Mantid Boarding Party of Doom, where I forgot to take my laser off of autofire. After that, it was discovering that the hotkey for teleporting guys to a ship and the hotkey for teleporting guys from a ship are different. Then it was the flagship teleporting away with one of my guys still on board. *sigh*

Guess I'll have to try again tonight!

Am I just dense or something? I can't seem to upgrade my ship in time to really be worth anything in later sectors. The ONE time I made it to the enemy flagship I had a defense drone and 2 puny lasers, and that was only because I got lucky with random events. To say that didn't go well would be an understatement.

I'm always skirting the edge of the safe zone with the incoming enemy trying to hit as many areas as possible, but even then the amount of scrap I manage to get goes into repairing my hull or upgrading systems, or fuel. I never seem to have enough scrap to purchase the drone controls I desperately need, much less better weapons.

and yes this is on the you die all the time setting of "easy."

Well beat my first easy game. Steam says 10 hours. Now on to normal.

Spoiler:

I managed to unlock the stealth ship too. Not sure if it's any good. I had my engi ship at a good spec I think. I had 2 Ion Blast II, a Heavy Laser II but most of my victories came from my two Rock boarding party that went to town on the enemy crew while my ion blasters kept their weapons offline.

That last fight was a really tough one my strategy up to that point was really different than what was needed to actually beat the F$#@er. Still, being able to teleport into the weapon that was firing those 3 missiles and take it out was very helpful. I only realised which one was firing the missiles after a while though, so I got pounded quite a lot.

Still, I won even if it was on easy, I'm still happy I won.

If you are using the starting ship then don't go for drones... it's too expensive unless you get really lucky with drones being given to you and even then getting the system and the upgrades to make it worth while are still expensive and a waste of power. Try to get your shields up to 2 at the beginning then go for more weapons... an extra set of lasers and maybe a bomb of some sort.... then third layer of shields.... make sure you have crew for the 4 main systems.... I haven't beat it yet though so maybe I'm doing it wrong.

You're on track. 8-12 hours seems to be "first victory" time, at least if you start on Easy.

Might be worth sticking on Easy until you unlock more ships too.

Some of the ships require multiple events, in Homeworld sectors that rarely appear. Dying to a random system when you've done 2 of the 3 steps to unlock a ship will be heartbreaking, and you might not get another chance for several games.

I'm only about 3 or 4 hours in and it feels like all the excitement I had is now draining. I just cant get passed sector 5 :<

Yes, the spirit of this game is to win by any means. Including sitting there letting your shields, piloting, and engine guys skill up.

Grinding to make the game less difficult then it was meant to be? At that point your altering the designed difficulty curve which I feel makes the game so great. If I won, I would feel like a cheated a bit. Obviously that just my personal opinion.

Build up your shields, and after you hit enemy weapons once or twice, go for their engines. Makes it much easy to pound the crap out of them when they can't dodge.

15 hours in. I've made it to the boss a few times, but got destroyed. Not giving up though. Love the game and the soundtrack.

Hmm, could do. I feel like I should take tonight off. My eyes are blurry today from staying up late playing this on a work night.

But, assuming my resolve sucks (which it does) and I wanted to get some more ships, is there a guide on what I have to do to get each one? The description when you hover over each one isn't really sufficient.

Still, not sure how else I'm going to beat the game without my ion blaster and boarding party, so if I don't get those next playthrough, I could be in for a short game.

Thanks

Now to plan out how to get said ships... anyone got them all yet? Favourites?

It's mostly luck. The missions show up or they don't. And sometimes you run out of systems in the sector or the sector you need next doesn't show up on the map.

I'm sure Erik has them all with 200 hours.

I have all of the A versions. Still missing 2 B versions. I haven't played as much this week after getting some new things on the Steam/holiday sales and dabbling there instead.

Engi A is still one of the best, and easiest ways to beat the game. It gives you the basic tools you need to beat the game from the start with the droid and ion. You just have to find a decent laser or beam in all those sectors and you are good to go.

Zoltan A is probably the "best" ship. 3 Zoltan crew for extra energy, a fantastic 2-dmg-per-room beam, and that Zoltan shield you can only get on their ships... very very nice.

Hahah! Victory on normal after 27 hours played!
Score: 4617
I also got the Technophobia achievement because I decided early on that the drones were simply too expensive and then ironically gathered more scrap than ever without ever again finding a drone system in a store.
Now to switch to easy and unlock some more ships.

Sheesh, well done =) I'll give it another try today

Out of The Kestrel, Engi, and Fed cruiser I think the Fed cruiser was the easiest so far (for my playstyle, whatever that is).

Looking forward to trying the Rock ship next. The simple layout looks like fun for a few rounds of Boarding Party Breathplay.

I can never get very far, but I think the Engi is my favorite so far. (It's the only one I have unlocked)

I made it to the second phase of the boss with that one.

I liked the rock ship. I beat the game my first time using it. It was probably a bit of luck more then anything but having 3 rock crew mates at the start really helps against boarding parties and fires. The rock plating is nice too.

OK kids. This is the first PC game I've bought in about 3 years, mainly thanks to the Conference Callers gabbing on about it.

Turns out I kinda like it. Weird thing is that structurally, it really reminds me of one of my favorite games of the 8-bit era, The Wild Bunch on my beloved ZX Spectrum.

If you're really interested, you can grab a Speccy emulator and the game and have a go yourself!

Woo hoo! First normal win! Only took 22 hours of play time, so pretty good I think

Did it with a federation cruiser with fully upgraded engines, level 7 shields, fully upgraded artillery beam and level 7 regular weapons.

My weapon loadout was 2x Burst Laser II and an Ion Bomb. The Ion Bomb was the key to beating the boss. During phase 2 I had it auto-firing at his drone control, which pretty much knocked them out of the fight, and for phase 3 I set it to auto-fire at his teleporter, since the flavor text when I flew in said something about a teleporter weapon.

I also got some very nice augmentations for free and ended up using an Automated Reloader, a Weapon Pre-Igniter and a Shield Charge Booster.

I'm having a fairly decent run right now with my Engi...

My only fear is that my weapons aren't really that powerful (lvl 2 Ion, lvl 1 heavy laser, and a pegasus) and my hull is pretty damaged. I hope I find a store soon.

EDIT: I do have like 8 crew members, an anti personnel drone, and 75 scrap though.

So what you're saying is "plenty of resources to offload should you find a store"

Yep. If only I could sell extra crew members into slavery.

I had probably my best run ever using the Slug cruiser.

Laser -> Anti-Bio

Later turning to Laser Mk III -> Anti-Bio.

I was swimming in scrap. It was glorious.

Ooh my gosh, I had the same idea!!! Who needs 8 crewmembers anyhow??

The engi ship is good. Engi med bots are very good, starting with a drone system is nice and the extra drone slot is pretty good as well, but losing the 4th weapon slot can hurt a lot. The engi ship's advantages make the early stages of the game easier than many of the others.

Right now I have everything unlocked except for 1 ship, which you need a sequence of random events to go in your favor to even have a shot at getting it.

A tip: friends let me know that defense drone mark 1 is superior to mark 2 in most cases, and especially against the final boss. Shooting down lasers is nice but shooting down missiles is critical, and the mark 2 drone can get stuck re-loading when a missile is incoming. And it costs 4 power instead of 2. I've haven't used the mark 2 drone for a long time now and I never miss it.

I disagree. Defence Drone IIs are much better in every way. They move and shoot a lot faster so it's harder for them to be distracted.

Defense II may be better, but I don't consider them "costs 2 extra power" better. The main point of a defense drone is to keep missiles (and incoming boarding drones!) away, and the Defense I does that quite well.

A Defense I drone is actually the thing that I typically want most to get early on in a game. You just take so much less damage when incoming missiles are being shot down instead of ignoring your shields and damaging your ship.

Well if you're limited by drone parts and have enough power to use it, the DDII is a no-brainer. But if you have enough parts lying around, two DDI are much more effective against missile heavy enemies.
