Today's GiantBomb is only three hours. At that point, I don't even know what I'm paying for.
I want my money back.
Breaking News: today's Weekend Confirmed is the classic cast from 1Up Yours.

Hopefully that means it'll be a bit better. The bit where random developers that dropped by talked over each other? Not so great
I'd rather have Leigh Alexander again

I like the current year's stuff. Lots of good (and funny) discussions.

Define classic cast.

I assume he means Garnett, John, Shane, and Luke. That's my definition, anyway. Away I go to check!
Mark MacD and Skip too, awesome.

Yes, but a little hit or miss.
I liked some of the guests, but others, not so much
I've been enjoying the heck out of Giant Bomb's E3 marathon podcasts, but those MS Kinect guys from the first night? Oy Vey! I think 360 is golden, but even I couldn't stand thier shill.

Does Luke talk very much on it or is it more like the Out of the Game episodes he's on? The answer will determine whether I attempt to listen to it.

For me, there's been a 'critical mass' of nonsense in this year. I really enjoyed the discussions when it was merely too many people and the conversation was on a topic but had random stuff thrown in. At a few points it was way too many people making bad jokes over and over (that 'cross/ten' stuff from the fighting game, the rap, Johnny V learning to dance--I don't care), with Ryan trying to get them to actually talk about something. At those points I was just ploughing through, waiting for the right kind of disorder to return.

I sure am glad that I hate people enough in real life that I can't get worked up about podcast personalities and/or sports announcers.

Good for you. I don't hate anyone in real life, on podcasts or otherwise but I generally don't like what Luke contributes to the shows he's on so I was asking if he's a big part of this one. If he is I'll skip it because there's a crazy amount of awesome podcasts and videos to go through already, like another workday's worth of what so far has been amazing Giant Bomb stuff. I don't see what's wrong with asking that question.
Not long into Weekend Confirmed and already I remember why I wasn't so upset when John Davison isn't in the public eye much anymore - constant iOS fellatio. Even now that I have two years of experience with my own phone, this is way too much.

They were pretty bad, but it's not like those guys could have said anything negative about Microsoft even if they wanted to. Anyone working in a similar position for Sony or Nintendo would have been just as bad. That was just poor guest selection by Giant Bomb, especially considering the topics being covered were Microsoft and Sony. I've never seen the chat go that berserk over something before. It was pretty funny

How does it compare to Chris Grant (from Joystiq)? Is it as bad, not as bad, or about the same? His constant worship of iphone/ipad has almost made me stop listening to the Joystiq podcast despite enjoying Ludwig and both of the McElroys. (and I like my iphone)

I don't mind them liking a certain platform, what I dislike is ill informed dismissing of all others.
I generally ignore all that phone stuff.
I've never listened to more than 20 minutes of the Joystiq podcast, so I can't comment.
It's not really one of the reasons I like the Giant Bomb guys so much, but they're one of the few outlets that have a similar view as myself toward mobile gaming. There's potential, but the bar for quality is way too low* and playing games via traditional controls shoehorned onto the touchscreen is just kind of not fun.
*For example, even on our own iPhone gaming thread I've seen the Zenonia series praised as nice action RPGs. They were all on sale lately so I picked up 2 and 3 for a dollar apiece. I was flabbergasted by the lack of quality. The animations are jerky as hell, there are mistranslations and typos at least once ever four lines, the combat is shallow. I just don't get it.
I haven't heard John Davison, but in the case of Chris Grant it is not so much that he likes iOS. I'm completely fine with that and actually agree with many of his positive points about iPhone/iPad gaming. I've been really enjoying some of the 99c games on my phone.
It just seems that for the past year or so he finds a way to insert a 5-10 minute monologue about how iPhone/iPad gaming is the future into pretty much every discussion.
Speaking of podcasts and iOS gaming, did anyone else hear the throw-down between Arthur Gies and Ryan O'donnell a few months back on Rebel FM? Ryan hasn't been on the show since and he used to be on once a month.
It was episode 93, about 43 minutes in if anybody's curious.
I'd never heard an actual knockdown fight on a podcast til that glorious evening.
I remember that Rebel FM episode. It was pretty awkward at the end.
It's too bad because I highly respect the perspective that both Gies and O'donnell bring to the table, but I think they let their personal biases run away from them during that segment.
It was kind of like watching The Office. Entertaining, yet a bit cringe-worthy and sad all at the same time.
That was quite an episode. I think both Arthur and Ryan got too entrenched but it was interesting to see that long-running debate boil over like that. I doubt Ryan's been banned from that show, I think Area 5 has just been really busy lately. I hope to hear him on there again.
Like others have said, my problem is not when people talk about iOS gaming, it's when that is all they can talk about, when they compare everything else to it like they are supposed to be measured equally and especially when they dismiss anything else as old and outdated thinking. Though I own no iOS products, I definitely see the value they have as gaming platforms and they deserve to be called such as much as any other. One day when I can justify the cost, I will probably buy an iPad just for games. But the extremes some people take it to really make them seem no different than console fanbois on a message board. I'll give the new Weekend Confirmed a listen but it's a real shame if John Davison has gone that far into that position, especially since he's in charge of a site that's supposed to cover everything.
The part I found interesting was that the Giant Bomb guys kind of thought similarly about Vita and 3DS. Not as extreme as Davison may have put it but they all said that the 3DS and Vita are both really cool devices that will probably flop because the handheld market has "moved on". And these are guys who straight up said they don't care for most mobile gaming. That really shocked me to hear from them and it seems to be the dominant attitude in the games press right now. I was actually ready to pre-order a Vita after the Sony press conference but after hearing these opinions from personalities I trust, I'm now concerned about it hitting the market with a whimper. It would really sadden me if there isn't a place for dedicated, hardcore handhelds anymore.

I think the word "flop" is thrown around a bit too loosely around E3, every year.
I don't think any dedicated gaming handheld will reach Game Boy or DS levels of success again. I do think they can still move 50 million or so and we'll still be getting the types of games we love on them. The critical thing is, if we can get those same experiences and pay $5 for them instead of $40, do we want to? Eventually you figure there'll be a phone that does gaming controls right, and at that point I'd be on board.
Of course, Pokemon. They'll never have Pokemon, and Pokemon is important to me.
It would really sadden me if there isn't a place for dedicated, hardcore handhelds anymore and that the type of handheld gaming I enjoy is being replaced by disposable $0.99 experiences.
Agreed. I like my iPod touch for gaming in those instances where it's awkward to use my DS... namely on the treadmill. For 35 minutes a day I'm a big fan of iOS gaming (Sword & Poker, Monopoly, Stanza for reading an eBook, Sword of Fargoal, 100 rogues, Doom2RPG) - but only for turn-based stuff. I've yet to find an action game where I find a touch screen preferable to a good controller.
His response to both the Wii and Vita was "Yo, my iPad 3 will be able to do all that stuff and so much more." I'm being reductive, of course, but yeah.
Did you mean 3DS and Vita? Just asking 'cause I haven't listened yet.
Anyway, I've heard this same sentiment from a lot of podcasts, including GWJ, Weekend Confirmed and Giant Bombcast.
It gets more difficult to defend as the iOS/Android game market continues to mature. When you have a single device that "does everything", including gaming, it puts more pressure on dedicated portable game devices that only do one thing.
I can see where Vita and 3DS offer deeper gaming experiences, but on the same token I can also see where they're severely marginalized by smart-phone gaming. Esp. when you're looking at the compounded issue of paying $30-$40 for a single 3DS/Vita game vs. iPhone games that cost $.99-$2.99 on average.

Fixed!
I feel similarly to the Giant Bomb dudes about mobile gaming. I had a PSP and DS, and I enjoyed the games on both. I liked the PSP console-lite type games, but when I found myself playing them sitting on my couch, I realized that I can play a better version of those games on the console. With the DS, there are some amazing titles, but most of the best ones can be done on the iOS, where I'd pay a quarter of the price for them (at most). I may get a 3DS for Nintendo's first-party offerings eventually, but there's no way I could justify carrying around another device and keeping it charged for those.
That said, I have a Vita pre-ordered. I may cancel it, but the tech sure looks cool.

Just got done with the E3 Weekend Confirmed. It was fine, but the magic I remember wasn't really there. Maybe I'm spoiled by the Bombcast and how good they are at riffing off each other.
