Gamer Podcasts

Yeah, I loved how you guys went point by point on each decision and could often cover multiple angles and compare. Sorry to the GWJCC guys, but unfortunately it seemed they often couldn't even remember what had happened during their decisions, especially for the earlier episodes.

Pixel by Pixel is a keeper. Great discussions.

Edit: Game design round table is also great. Woo! Two new gaming podcasts for my rotation.

I agree - it was a rare sub-par section. Of course, when I listened to it I had just finished the game so that it was all very fresh. If they had all played it as the episodes were released, there's a lot that one can forget. I played the last three episodes back to back.

I've been looking for more game podcasts, and PxP as well as GDRT sound great.

I've really been digging Idle Thumbs lately. I had no idea they also did a book podcast. I should give that a try, since they've mentioned a lot of books I'm interested in as well.

I do get tired of all the game/nerd podcasts that tend to have a revolving cast drawn from the same small group of LA comedians. Way too often the episodes just turn into the crew riffing off each other/trying to top one another in an exhausting and not-as-funny-as-they-hope way.

I thought this was worth sharing if only for the fact that it's the only piece of content I've seen TB produce where he's not being a fan boy, hyperbolic, overcritical, and/or complaining how bad he is at something.

I wouldn't agree with your assessment of his work as a whole but yeah, that was an interesting video. It is unfortunate that the elements of his "community" that still use his comments are so incredibly stupid that it requires him to make stuff like this once in a while. I don't even bother going into his comments and if I have feedback for him, I just send it to him on Twitter. As someone who is hoping to launch a small YouTube project next month, I am really concerned about having to deal with this garbage.

I would agree with your first point. I was just making a generalization of what I've seen, which is mostly just WTF of games that I'm interested in. About your concern, only worry if you don't take negativity well, but it seems like you do. Use criticism to better yourself, and praise to humble yourself.

I handle criticism OK publicly but not so much in my own head, though I am much better at it than I used to be. I've decided that shouldn't be a barrier to me doing this thing and that the only way to learn and improve how I handle it is to jump in but yeah, should be a journey.

I don't have anything against the man, but god damn he verbose. 25 minutes to explain a fairly simple point?

So, Weekend Confirmed: both Jeff Mattas and Ryan Calavano were apparently laid off from Shack News. Jeff had apparently been slated to be on the episode when they tweeted last Thursday so it had to have been a surprise.

This comes after the guys were practically begging for positive reviews on iTunes for a couple of weeks. What the heck is going on over at Shack News? Is this the beginning of the end of the show? Is this a symptom of a larger problem for Gamefly?

I was glad to hear from Xav again, but I am seriously going to miss Jeff M, who had become one of my favorite contributors to the show.

Sad to hear. I finally cut the cord a couple months back after Terrible Garnett & Female drunken sexual harassment happy hour started making >50% appearances, but I really enjoyed Jeff Mattas and I hope he's on a better podcast sometime in the future.

Sad to hear Jeff go, but that was one of their very best episodes. It was mostly civil, and they called each other on their BS.

I love Jeff, hope he lands on his feet.

Apparently GameFly laid off as much as 1/3 of their staff, though it wasn't clear if that was in their editorial division or across the whole company. If I were to hazard a guess (and that's all they are), I would say that either the general decline of the video game retail market is also negatively impacting the rental business (that plus I keep hearing about people getting fed up with GameFly's lousy service) and that GameFly's attempt to get into the mobile publishing business was a bust. The only game they ever talked about was Writer Rumble which seems to have come and gone with little fanfare and they haven't said a word about it since. Given that Garnett who hosts Weekend Confirmed was also the guy in charge of mobile publishing, I'm wondering if it hasn't worked out. I hope Mattas can find a good home soon and GameFly can right itself.

If anyone's interested, ccesarano was kind and awesome enough to invite me onto his GamerTagged Downloadable Content podcast to yammer about the PS4. First time I've ever done such a thing but it was a lot of fun!

Jeff Cannata (from Weekend Confirmed and the recently shut-down Totally Rad Show) just put up a kickstarter pitching his new show called (probably temporarily) "Jeff Cannata's New Show":

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

He wants $20,000 for everything needed for a few pilot episodes, which he is going to use to pitch around for a good home. I like the guy well enough, I may even donate, who knows.

I really love loving Jeff Cannata. I'll probably toss a bit of cash his way if it can help him get a show of his own.

I really like Jeff and will probably back to see what happens, but I wish the pitch was a little more concrete. Right now it's just, "I want to make a show about stuff I love. Give me money and we'll see what I make of it." Not that I necessarily doubt his ability to deliver, but the pitch gave the impression that it's still very early in concept.

I suppose I could become an executive producer and make sure the show becomes what I want it to become

I like Jeff too. Backing.

I'll have to pass. He has his moments but 'Indi' Jeff is the only one for me :).

I mentioned this in the "loath" thread, but I had the same thing after the most recent ep. I just found Garnetts conduct towards Andrea Renae to be disgusting.

Not a podcast but a youtube series RollPlay is D&D game being played over google hangout.

Looks like he already flew past that goal - wow. I'm excited for Jeff's project, but there's nothing I really want to get from the Kickstarter and he's already well beyond his funding goal, so I'm going to wait and see.

That's kind of how I approach Kickstarter in general now, actually. Unless there's some exclusive I just have to have, or if I think the project is struggling, I'll just wait for the actual thing to exist.

I really like the fact that Cannata is doing no physical rewards with his Kickstarter and is totally owning that. From what he's hinted at on Twitter, he's basically doing this because of overwhelming demand from former TRS viewers who want to see him do something else. He knows he has brand cache and he's using it smartly while also keeping his costs down by not having to worry about fulfilling physical goods. He's laying it all out without confusion and making sure people know exactly what they're getting. That's ballsy for Kickstarter and it's really cool. Is it crazy I considered pledging his $250 tier just so I could use the half hour Skype conversation it guarantees to ask him the best ways to promote my new YouTube show? It's probably crazy right?

I don't think that's crazy. Paying a consultant would cost you at least that much. At least this way you know you'll like the guy you end up hiring.

Also, isn't there a T-Shirt option? I thought I read that on the Kickstarter page.

Dan and 30+ straight minutes of Dark Souls chatter made last week's Weekend Confirmed a pretty great one for me.

I dunno, he annoyed me a lot. Mainly because his way of playing the Souls games is opposite from mine. I like to explore for myself, find out the secrets, be surprised. I prefer not to min/max off some faq, at least not until my second or third play through. Of course, not only is he a faq min/maxer, his way of playing through the game at a low soul level but just boosting via equipment and upgrades was a bit of a revelation. Now I know why occasionally an invader will utterly destroy me even when we should both be relatively low soul levels.

I don't think last week's WC really worked for me. Dan has an interesting perspective, but I think the 'cast got lost in the weeds without any real direction, and it turned into the "what games does Dan like" show. Yoon seemed especially quiet.

I think they were adapting to the last minute loss of Cannata, and were doing the best they could with a plan B.

Billy "Plan B" Berghammer was back?! I'm sold!

Well, I seem to be about the only person here that wasn't a fan of Indie Jeff on the show, so I guess it makes sense that I'd be the outlier here too

ccesarano, PXA: Listened to some of your show, will finish it tonight. Good stuff!
