Gamer Podcasts

Even though not directed to me- that's good feedback. I do a podcast as well, and am sure that my mic is not a strong influence on the cast.

I've downloaded two months of Weekend Confirmed episodes. Wish me luck.

Haha, hit and miss my friend. The most recent one was a bit of a miss for me actually.

That drunk English guy was funny for a while until I had to turn it off because of him. Also, they kept calling the Mass Effect enemies "Reavers" and coming up with the same stupid post ME3 fanboy plot points they want to see in the next one for what seemed like 10 minutes.

I haven't got around to playing ME3 yet due to dead 360 and it annoyed me being told I shouldn't care about spoilers for a game because it was "already" 8 months old. And how about WiiU owners?

Having said that, Playstation Blogcast spoiled ME3 only a month or so after it came out so they get the prize for spoiler douchebaggery.

Wow, looks like Totally Rad Show is over?!!?

Diggnation and TRS gone. Two of my favorite online shows now retired! Looks like TRS will go out a bit more gracefully than Diggnation did, though

Very sad to see it go. Really got to know their tastes over the years so I could always gauge my interest in stuff based on their reactions. Now I need to find another source to keep me up-to-date on the latest films. I've watched almost every single episode of TRS since the beginning, it's the one online show I made sure to watch every weekday. It was interesting when Alex was on Tabletop that he didn't mention Totally Rad Show in his list of things he worked on, and I wonder if they had been talking about ending the show for awhile so he didn't want to end up mentioning a show that no longer aired.

They had a heck of a run for a web series though, and I'll certainly be keeping an eye on whatever else the three of them do together or on their own.

Sad Panda face over TRS.

Damn I loved that show.

Clearly, Jeff had to end TRS so he could devote more of his time and energy to the GWJCC.

A little off topic, but does anyone have good recommendations for movie review podcasts? TRS really is how I kept up with new releases. Not as worried on the video game side, although I'd be interested if anyone listens/watches anything else online that was maybe similar to TRS? Ideally something in the shorter (20-30) format that TRS switched to; I really don't want 1-2 hour podcasts if possible.

Which is why I've given up on lots of podcasts (especially for board games). They all like to push well over an hour. I'd rather have shorter, more focused shows than the long rambling shows most deliver.

I never watched TRS cause I didn't have time but have they said why it's ending? Seems to have come out of nowhere.

I linked it earlier but Now Playing has been the movie podcast I've been listening to and enjoying. However, they don't seem to always do recent stuff, but they do a lot of retrospectives. It has that same effect on me as the GWJCC where I want to be a part of the conversation.

Well I know that they put up new video content every day, so I wonder if it got to be too much work in the end.

Jeff has also been getting some traction in casting for plays and such too, and I imagine that's a demanding schedule.

It's been going for almost six years now. Sounds like they've decided to end the show while it's still going strong and move on to other endeavors. With focus on non-content segments like the various games they play (which I do really enjoy... I'd be okay if the show was mostly "Versus"), obvious late-night tapings and the fact that their video game reviews have become more "first impressions" than full reviews (which I'm okay with), it's easy to tell the show has been losing the battle against other professional work they have lined up.

I'll second Now Playing as a great podcast, but they don't really seem to focus on new stuff much at all. It seems like they'll only cover new stuff when they can tie it in to one of their retrospective series (Prometheus for Alien/s, Skyfall for Bond, Avengers for Marvel).

Glad some of you have enjoyed the new podcast (The Game Design Round Table) that Dirk Knemeyer and I are collaborating on!

Episode #2 (the first one with real, meaty content) is now posted. This week Dirk and I had Rob Daviau on as a guest and we discussed a variety of topics from Risk: Legacy to running an indie studio to some design dissection of some of the games we've been playing lately.

You can also check out Episode #1, where Dirk and I provided an intro to who we are, what we've done and what we'd like to get out of this project.

We'd love to get your guys' feedback in case there are any aspects of the show you really like and would like for us to build on, or would prefer us to handle differently.

I seriously think this week's Weekend Confirmed was one of the best ever. Marcus Beer is an awesome guest! Has strong opinions but is brilliant at having real debate rather than just a shouting match. I knew of him but didn't follow him much because I don't care for most of the outlets he works for but I would love him to be a regular on the show. I still like Jeff Cannata quite a bit but this panel as a whole was one of the best they've had. Fantastic listen!

I enjoyed Marcus as well. He really added something to it, even if I can see the frustration at his casual "It's an 8-month old game get over yourself" attitude.

Not sure how he qualifies for real debate. I found him to be extremely obnoxious and rude to the other panellists, the way he kept interrupting them to let him finish, but then would do the exact same interruptions when they finally got their say made the cast extremely hard to listen to. I'll definitely be skipping any future time he's a guest, which is annoying as I haven't missed an episode going all the way back through the 1up yours days.

When he interrupted to say something along the lines of "Finish up your point so I can totally destroy you" was when I turned it off.

Maybe it just seemed more like real debate compared to what debate usually consists of on the show. I found it to be much more reasoned and calm rather than just shouting.

Wow, I am surprised that you liked him so much. I found him extremely detrimental to the podcast. He had a very negative "PC master gaming race" vibe to him, and it was laughable that he even tried to shrug it off because he apparently bought two SNES consoles. Well good for him, but having two SNES consoles does not give you enough credibility to start crapping on everything the video game industry is doing these days.

Guy had a real chip on his shoulder. Give me back Cannata. I don't ever want to listen to this other guy again.

I laughed at his "I have a $2000 Alienware rig" comment. He's so 1337!

He actually spoiled ME3 for me! Not that I was ever likely to finish it at this point. After all the Internet butthurt about the ending, I guess I figured it wasn't worth it.

I found Marcus a bit abrasive for my tastes. I'm fine that he has a different opinion, and it's good to have some diversity on the cast, but he really seemed to come off as thinking everybody else was simply "wrong" about things that are entirely subjective (like Borderlands 2 in the GOTY discussion - really?) When you're talking about something like a video game, sure, there are some objective things you can talk about, but a large portion of it is really subjective, and I think it's important to respect the opinions of other people.

Now all that said, I smiled a little when he ragged on Zelda, since I agree that there seem to be a lot of Nintendo fanboys in the game media who give that stuff an automatic pass.

A lot of that stuff came across as dry British sarcasm to me rather than true snark. Maybe I have an ear for that, maybe I misread him entirely. Personally, I'll take him over Rene or Spicer any day. But hey, to each their own.

Garnett needs someone to interrupt him because otherwise he obsesses endlessly over the most minor things, or goes down a never ending rabbit hole of tangents. I think 1UP Yours worked because they had a bunch of guys who had strong opinions and didn't always wait for their turn to speak.

The way Marcus was acting on this show reminded me a lot of how Jon Davison used to be on 1UP Yours, except Davison wasn't nearly as dry in his delivery.

It wasn't Garnett, it was the other guest.

I found he would start off on his rant but then have nothing to back it up. I actually enjoy hearing rants or just passion in general but he had no meat in his arguments. And the ME3 spoilers were unforgivable.

Okay, last time I'll shamelessly plug my own work.

We just posted Episode #3 of The Game Design Round Table today! This time we had Bill Abner on to talk about trends in games, our thoughts on the design of games we've been playing recently and what Dirk and Bill have been working on over at Conquistador Games.

And with that, we now return you to your regularly scheduled podcast thread!
