Gamer Podcasts

I started with Michael Abbott's Brainy Gamer podcast. He's very infrequent but I find his enthusiasm and articulation endearing. I listen to Rebel FM because those dudes know games and have good chemistry. They seem like they could get very immature, but they balance things with a consistent earnestness. Which of RFM or GWJ I listen to first in a given week would require some analysis. I know it's formulaic, technically, but I feel like I'm in ye conversation. Well done.

I keep trying to like the Game Informer podcast, but that group lacks chemistry and I get a feeling that they're shilling.

ok I listen to gaming podcasts all day every day, heres my rotation:

gwj, obviously
giant bombcast (3 hours and always good?!)
rebel fm (anthony and arthur. yep)
the comedy button (the guys that used to do gamespy debriefings)
the instance (its for WoW, love or hate it)
we're alive (a modern zombie radio drama)
the gamespy debriefings (over and over again)
the geekbox (just for ryan)
and i used to listen to all of the IGN casts but now I hate them to death for constant spoilers and having no respect for their audience

I had the privilege to hop aboard Tom Chick's podcast again and it was FUN.

Fans of GFW Radio may like to check out This Year's release of the 2008 GFW Best Of podcast. Kind of bittersweet since this is the final year of the podcast. Also, a sad moment when they announce the shutdown of the magazine and discuss some of the highs and lows.

I listed to that on the treadmill and it was excellent. I actually highly recommend This Year in general. They have compilations of a number of different podcasts both gaming related and not and they're extremely well put together.

I still can't get over the "Merchants of Cool" segment. Hilarious!

You know, Bombcast gets dings sometimes for going wildly off topic, but this week's rants about Zombie 5K, Miller beer "smooth pour" tabs, and knife vs. baseball bat death-fights had me falling out of my chair.

I say bring the OT. Those guys are insane.

It was pretty awesome.

They also tore apart Spec Ops: The Line. I am suddenly not interested in this game.

And I learned something new about the Harlem (Chicago) Globetrotters!

What I like is that they know they don't have a lot of games to talk about but they're still like "Nope, 3 hour show regardless" and they're just great at picking some crazy topic from the ether and running with them. It's one of the greatest things about that crew.

Seriously, one of the greatest podcast episodes I've listened to. I usually save the Bombcast for when I run, they are always interesting enough to keep me distracted. It's tough when they get on a roll, though, jogging down the street laughing out loud.

Yeah, I can understand the people that get mad at the Bombcast for the off-topic stuff, but honestly if they strictly adhered to a typical gaming podcast format (Games, News, E-mails) I'm not sure it'd have the same punch. Half of the reason I listen to these guys is because the off-topic stuff since it's usually hilarious but also because it shows how much of a tight knit group they all are. The way everyone plays off each other is done really smoothly and the other members can run with jokes without having it be forced/disjointed.

I spend every Wednesday in my cube trying stupid hard not to laugh my ass off, with this week being especiallyhard with the knife v bat issue.

Think I'll have to check out Rebel FM as I'm currently looking for other gaming podcasts. Already listen to GWJ, Three Moves Ahead, and Quarter To Three. So, why not toss another podcast on there?

EDIT: Wow, wrong thread.

The Bombcast this week was indeed great. Their dumb tangents reminded me of a good Idle Thumbs cast. I'm sure Blind_Evil is going to want to punch me for saying that

You know, if you watch the quick look they put up, Jeff ends up saying that since recording the podcast he had more time to spend with it and says the story is actually pretty good. So it sounds like it's one of those games you check out when you see it used or on sale for like $10-$20

Thanks for the tip on Rebel FM, hadn't heard of that one but it's great! Kind of Giant Bombcast-like with more focus on gaming. It is now in the rotation. I'm gonna need a longer work commute to get these all in....

Nah. If anything it makes me question myself more. I haven't heard any Thumbs rants that I can relate to, is all. Punch top Miller cans? Yessir.

My problem with the Bombcast wasn't that it was off topic, it just wasn't entertaining for me. At least, not in the hour I listened to an episode. I haven't had the desire to go back to it.

But that's more of a personal style. Most podcasts that just sound like a bunch of guys sitting around talking at each other I don't like, but then again, I enjoyed Talk Radar for some reason.

Listen to this week's cast.

Actually, don't listen to this weeks episode if you don't like to listen to

I didn't really enjoy this weeks episode because they just said a lot of things I don't agree with (but does't everyone). The more I listen to them the less I like them. They seem to all have personalities that I would not get along with.

Weekend Confirmed's Garnett did a 180 on Spec Ops this week. It was really quite distasteful. He had one of the devs of the game as a guest last week and, frankly, spent the whole episode fellating him. Regardless, the game discussion was pretty interesting. This week he spent half an hour dumping on the game. Now, even if he didn't like the game, he could have adopted a kinder tone. As it was, it felt like he must have received a bunch of complaints about the previous episode and needed to prove his impartiality. Was weird.

Yes, I had the same feeling.

Thought I could repost my tweet here:
No thanks to the Official PlayStation Blogcast for their random Mass Effect 3 spoilers. f*ckers. #unsubscribe

Ever heard of spoiler tags?

My rotation of podcast is the

Giantbomb cast - It's the best podcast still around
Idle Thumbs - Whenever they have it.
Comedy Button - such a great podcast.
Geekbox - mainly for ryan scott.
occasional rebel fm but I can't stand Arthur and think he ruins the podcast.
occasional gwj - I don't listen to them reliably for a long time.
8-4 play - I stil really enjoy it.
Retronauts - I still enjoy it
Game Informer - I like the topics and the roundtables.
Weekend Confirmed - I enjoy Garnett
Active Time Babble - I enjoy it.
All Gen Gamers - It's a really good podcast.
DGR - I listen occasionally.
PCGamer - I enjoy the PC Talk
Three moves ahead - It's entertaining.
Radio Free Nintendo - I enjoy it.

There's a bunch of others like Super happy funtime show, Most Popular Girls that I will occasionally listen to as well.

I haven't even listened to Weekend Confirmed yet, but that is disheartening. Last week's pushed me over the edge to go and buy it, and 9 chapters in I'm actually enjoying myself.

Granted I still stand by what I said in the Week Ahead thread, and that for most GWJers I'd consider it a Steam Sale purchase and not a full blown $60, but it's a solid enough game.

That's just depressing.

Despite the Garnett over the top trademark moves, there's a good discussion about it with some counterpoints from other people.

I just don't understand why he (Garnett) felt he had to be such an asshole about it. I generally enjoy him on WC :(.

Okay, after reading the previous posts about Weekend Confirmed, I'm getting the feeling you guys would like for him to tone down his dislike of the game with part of the reason being he was so positive on it the week before when the dev was on?

Personally if he really doesn't like the game (and in this case he REALLY doesn't) I would prefer him to speak his mind regardless of his opinions. I certainly wouldn't want anybody in the games media filtering themselves based on their interactions with game devs.

He could have presented them in a way where he wasn't so hysterical and over the top. Thankfully, as I said, his guests were there to counter him and make it an interesting discussion.

It wasn't that he didn't like the game, it was the way he presented his opinions, like he felt he had something to make up for from the previous week's episode. Anyway, have a listen, you might agree.

So we return from hiatus with an episode that is half about movies. And here’s the obligatory list of topics: Lego Games, Lumines, Motostorm RC, PSVita, Apple / Steve Jobs, Diablo, 3DSxl, Handhelds, Nintendo, Anarchy Reigns, The “more, more, more” mentality, Industry trends, Transfomers (Movies), Alien(s), Horror films, Keanu Reeves, Cabin in the Woods, Dead Space 2, Tomb Raider.
