Gamer Podcasts

Rob's no. 1, for sure. I really do think I'd listen more if Klepek stepped away.

Well, fortunately, that's not happening.

I had to quit listening to Waypoint's podcast. I found it to be too much of an echo chamber. I like Patrick a lot, but I feel like he shines the most when he is challenged and forced to come up with really specific articulate arguments to prove his point, which is he very good at.

SO yeah, I miss hearing him on the Bombcast.

Beastcast beats Bombcast, who's with me?

The Bombcast goty episodes have been all I listen to of that show for a while now. One episode in, maybe end of Feb and I'll be done.

The Waypoint podcast moved way up my list of things to listen to every week over the course of 2017. Part of that is definitely Rob, but a bigger part has been Austin realizing that he doesn't have to take over every conversation and talk over everyone else on the podcast.

Also, I loved their GOTY stuff. It was nice to have at least one podcast do something different for GOTY shows.

Oh yeah! I missed those actual podcasts over the holidays. Need to go back and download those.

I really like all of the Waypoint crew but 2 podcasts a week is just too much for me. If they had time stamps I'd probably pick-and-choose topics of discussion but instead I just tune in when I here there's been a particularly good line of discussion in an episode.

Also... Did anyone enjoy Cane and Rinse in the end? Any converts?

I listen on occasion. Depends on the mood. I dig it though.

I tried it and bailed after 2.5 episodes, just not for me.

My personal favorite is the Co-optional podcast by totalbiscuit (cynicalbrit), JesseCox, and Dodger (dexbonus).

Mostly because it's less about serious in-depth gaming-discussion, and more "gaming friends hanging out talking about crap for 4 hours". They usually host the show with one extra guest, and discuss about games they've played in the week.

Each of them has a pretty distinct personality as well as taste in game genres, so there's usually a good coverage on different types of games.

It took me awhile to get used to Jesse's vibe (I knew about TB from starcraft, and watched dodger on twitch stream before), and he *was* my least favorite host. After about 2 years of listening now, it just feels wrong not to have him on the show

Added 3 podcasts to try out because of this page. Thanks.

Aside from any political beef I have with podcast hosts, I just can't fathom the idea of wanting to listen to four hours of *any* podcast.

Background noise. The house gets quiet from time to time

Also for me personally: 3 hours of commute daily is a pretty huge motivator to listen to long podcasts

I guess I get that - I just want different podcasts to be playing; I only listen to the same ones in that kind of binge when I've added a new one and I'm catching up on backlog

I love Cane and Rinse. I only listen to episodes for games I'm familiar with, though (which kinda makes sense, considering how in-depth they go). Really like them. Guess you can call me a convert!

Funny I'm the exact opposite. I really dislike those podcasts under 10 minutes because they mean I need to be constantly changing them, which means taking my hands of the handrail and risk faceplanting :/

I need a car. That's the moral of story.

Pocket Casts (at least for Android) is great for setting up playlists - I've got about 30 hours queued

Ok if that is the case then I'll have to give it a more serious listen. Also toward the start Rob didn't really seem comfortable in the show so I'm glad that changed. Maybe there is enough diversity of thought now.

I had fallen off Waypoint when their "inside" references and jokes had started to be three layers deep. I dont know how it is now but there was a point back then where they were way too deep into their own mythology.

Huh that's good to hear. I started using pocket casts very recently so don't know my way around it fully. Thanks for the info

Nintendo Power is back in Podcast form. Comes with a lengthy interview on the development of Breath of the Wild so I have a feeling this might be decent for Nintendo fans to follow.

Was a pretty good listen. They're also keeping it to about an episode per month so that works out pretty well in my rotation.

The rest of my current rotation then:
Waypoint Radio
Idle Thumbs
Idle Weekend
Retronauts
Upper Memory Block

The last two are mostly digging through the archives for games/topics I'm interested in. The other three are for general opinion / news (even if it's a bit heavy on Rob and Danielle).

And in case people forgot to check it out, Checkpoints is my favorite video game podcast. Just look through the list of guests on all the 100+ podcasts, and it'll grab your attention.

I just want to thank Tanglebones for enlightening me with the playlist feature on PocketCast!

Now to load all the podcasts mentioned here!

"Waypoint" and "Checkpoints" are two different shows right? I only see waypoint on my software unfortunately. Might need to download that on my PC and give it a try

Yeah, completely different. Checkpoints is an interview show.

Especially four hours of Bain. The transphobic, fence-sitting, honourary-fedora-wearing cockwomble.

Jesse Cox is ok though. Dodger I find rather annoying unless she's co-let's playing adventure games with Jesse.

@Cces, Eleima, yeah Cane and Rinse is a pick and mix show for sure, only grab episodes of games am done with or know I'm never going to play but have an interest in. Like a CC spoiler special, but one a week and 10x as long

Also enjoyment depends on the guests, who vary quite a bit throughout.

I have a soft spot for it probably because they discussed the merits of Speedball 2 for approx three hours

That Checkpoint show intrigues Tuffalo, will have to check out an episode of two, any recommendations?

Just go through the list and find a few game devs or game industry names you recognize and start there! That's what I did and then went and listened to all the rest. I haven't run into a bad interview yet. Everyone has really interesting things to share about how video games have had an impact on their lives.

ahaha that's a super colourful image you paint there. I do find these types of audio experience extremely biased towards personal preference (audio books and podcasts alike), so I can definitely see where you're coming from.

I listened to Waypoint on my way home. Not bad. It didn't quite grab my interest, but I don't have anything specific against. Will probably try it for another week.

Yup, that's the one I was alluding to without going into detail

I have literally no idea what pyxi is referring to and now I know I never want to.

Same here, unless it's a history thing about the fall of Rome or whatnot.
