Gamer Podcasts

Hey, sorry to hear that Ramblecast will be put on hiatus. But good to know it's for the main reason of wanting to focus on other content. Best of luck!

The latest episode of DLC, a semi-weekend confirmed reunion at PAX, has reminded how much I dislike Garnett Lee. He seems to have a lot of fans in this thread. I don't get it.

From as much as I listened to, he was showing his worst side on this show. It really seemed like he had a chip on his shoulder from being outside of the games media for so long, like he thought he had some special insight into the industry and that everyone else on the panel didn't "get it". And from there it degraded into the most overwrought topics imaginable for a podcast, like whether or not VR is going to be a thing, and money vs. time when choosing between video games.

But I do miss his energy, and I do miss his ability to get people talking. Even if it's just to defend against whatever inane agenda he has for that day.

Yah, VR discussion is getting pretty tiring at this point.

My issues aren't about what is being discussed, but how it's being discussed in this case.

I found it uncomfortable listening. Garnet seemed to pounce on anything Andrea said and immediately attempt to tear it apart. His opinions may just be the opposite of Andrea's but I've noticed before that he doesn't tend to give her any quarter.

Fair enough. Guess I'm not that interested in VR until it becomes far more ubiquitous. At least not in terms of the level of coverage it gets.

Bad Garnett! I miss him but I do agree, he was not at his best on DLC this week.

Maybe he was drunk?

That certainly crossed my mind, Garnett was always at his worst after a few drinks.

The PAX reunion made me realize that I now like DLC more than I liked Weekend Confirmed. I really feel like Jeff is better suited to leading a conversation; he doesn't interrupt people and doesn't always have to get the last word.

The high production value and large rotating panel of WC is missed, although DLC seems to be getting some good guests lately. Three people is a pretty solid number for a podcast.

Andrea hinted at him being drunk early on.

DLC is pretty good on the whole but the guests are very hit and miss.

I really like Radio Free Nintendo. I find the regulars to be really down to Earth and seem to have great chemistry together. A long-time host just left the show recently, so it's been going through some noticeable growing pains the last couple weeks, but I have no doubt that they'll soon find their groove. Obviously, it's a Nintendo-centric podcast, but they will occasionally speak about newer releases.

I agree on Garnett Lee. I remember listening to a Weekend Confirmed (which I loved) where they were all drunk, and I tweeted him to tell him that I found that episode a bit annoying and shouty, to which he replied something a bit condescending! After explaining I wasn't trying to be horrible and loved the show, he was a bit more understanding, but it did make me realise that towards the end of Weekend Confirmed that he didn't seem to be able to handle opposing opinions with much poise. I also specifically remember that in that show he seemed to be a bit sarcastic to everything Andrea Rene said, which was my main annoyance.

I like the guy and his passion for games, but I agree that he can get a bit muddled in his arguments sometimes. I do miss Weekend Confirmed. Although I had equal annoyance for when he brought Marcus Beer in the show. That guy is just...bah!

I might give DLC a go though, if I can fit it in!

I probably sound like a broken record but I think that DLC has really come into its own (after a tough start with the failed call-in format...).

They've had several WC contributors as DLC guests (aside from the PAX panel): Garnett, Andrea, Nikole Z, Xav, "Indie" Jeff Mattas, Andrew Yoon (who has sadly since passed away), and (for better or worse) Marcus Beer. Probably others that I have forgotten.

It's really interesting to hear what the WC gang has been up to every now and then. They've definitely scattered to the wind.

Oh, I had no idea Andrew Yoon died! That's terrible to hear, he was great to listen to on WC!

I had only caught on to gamer podcasts and Weekend Confirmed for about the last year of their run and I had enjoyed it quite a bit, but it had always seemed to me like it was Jeff's show.

I tried to give Garnett on Games a listen but I couldn't handle it.

DLC on the other hand has been solid ever since they ditched the call-in segment, which was quite a while ago already. Spicer plays the snark role and although the snark or the jokes don't always land it never comes off as coming from a truly negative place.

I agree about Christian Spicer. He's never mean spirited. I listen to DLC every week now.

I'm listening to the DLC Weekend Confirmed Reunion, and I'm really enjoying it. I've always liked Garnett's perspective, and I never found him as annoying as others.

I don't think I'll re-subscribe to DLC, though. There's just too many things that irk me about the show, from Jeff's lazy acronyms (Downloadable Cannata, Downloadable Christian, ugh, really) to the silly songs. I can get over some of it, but for whatever reason I just can't get into the show.

Totally with you on Garnett on this episode, he actually seemed really restrained and one of the sensible ones on the episode. Always love to hear his sheer enthusiasm for games shining through.

Hah.. it's like we didn't even listen to the same podcast. Different strokes I guess.

I've only just started listening to DLC after having listened to Jeff Cannata's other podcasts for ages. (We Have Concerns in particular is one of my favorites). Gotta say I love the dynamic between him and Christian

I love Jeff's initialisms and the segment songs. One of the great things about Jeff vs. a lot of other podcasters is that he doesn't take things too seriously.

I just wish he'd get rid of Tabletop Time.

I don't care for Tabletop Time but I really respect that he puts it at the end of the episode instead of in the middle somewhere. Makes it easy to just stop it when I'm done. Really, I like DLC in spite of the jingles and Jeff's other inanities than because of them. Maybe I just like Christian a lot :).

I'm a big Garnett Lee fan. I've always found him to have the ability to have one of the most adult and insigntful discussions on the gaming hobby. From my perspective, he was off on the DLC episode and seemingly in a negative or drunken mood.
I wonder whether he regrets getting out of the gaming discourse scene and his emotions bubbled to the surface.

I'm on the same page with you. I have subscribed and unsubscribed to DLC so many times it's crazy. I'll listen to one and say it's not bad but... not stick with it. Maybe it's the Skype-ness? Jokes not landing? Dunno.

Sorry to hear you are shelving the Ramblecast ccesarano. It's probably good to focus on the things you are most enthusiastic about. It sounds like there have been other things going on behind the scenes and, although I don't know what, I can probably guess. There does seem to be a strong tendency to demonise people these days, if they have an opposing point of view or even if they honestly try to see both sides of an argument.

I agree with you about listening to or watching more BBC news .

Thanks Higgledy, and to Flax who mentioned it last page. I'm going to try and start streaming at the end of this month on Sundays, so I'll keep you guys informed on that.

Unfortunately other real life factors have made working on anything difficult as well.

Ramblecast was great and thank you for your work on the show. So sorry to hear negative external factors influenced the decision to go on hiatus. Hope life treats you better soon.

Chad

Had no idea they dropped the caller stuff in DLC, may have to give it another listen.

I don't like Garnett Lee. He holds no opinions of his own. He just spouts what he thinks the listeners want to hear. That's how I experience him.
