Gamer Podcasts

Oh! Because I'm crazy. I didn't see the regular version when I looked earlier.

Well, good. But I'll need to un-sub from the premium version so I can hear Mr. Business' ads.

EDIT: Aaand I'm apparently not observant when looking at the Giant Bomb site, so nevermind.

Hey does anyone else here listen to Three Moves Ahead? I've tried downloading the latest two episodes but using "save link as" on the Get MP3 link makes Firefox save an HTML file instead of the podcast mp3. I can still listen to it by streaming the file but I usually download and listen while playing Elite.

Does this download work for anyone else?

I don't know why it doesn't work because I've downloaded the podcast hundreds of times using this exact method. Something broke in the past 2 weeks.

Right-clicking the Get MP3 button works fine for me.

I sure hope so!

I just tried in Chrome, Firefox, and IE and it seems to be working on my end... Do you have any extensions you installed in the last few weeks (especially Quicktime) that might impact how pages are laid out? Does it only do that in Firefox? If it's not the result of a funky extension, let me know what version number of FF you're using and I will forward a report the Idle Thumbs guys. (I just tried it using version 38 and it seemed to work.)

Until then, here's a download link for this week's show.

I'm new-to and really enjoying 8-4 Play these days. I love the x-pat perspective on Japan and Japanese gaming/games. It's definitely my new favorite gaming podcast. Hearing them talk about playing the recent release of Xenoblade Chronicles X in Japan is rad because now I'm very excited for the US release.

No new extensions but I did update to Firefox 38.0.1 a couple days ago. I use Adblock Plus and NoScript but those were never an issue before and disabling them didn't change anything.

I think it is something to do with that specific webpage. GWJ also uses libsyn for file hosting but if I Save As on that link it works fine. If I Copy Link Location I get this:

http://traffic.libsyn.com/gwjcc/GWJ_...

Now the odd thing is that if I try to Save As on TMA my browser tries to download an HTML file. However if I Copy Link Location I get these instead.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/threemoves...
http://traffic.libsyn.com/threemoves...

If I Save As on either of these links it works fine. The only difference I can see is that the TMA page has some kind of streaming flash player that uses the same link as the file download. I think this is confusing my browser because if I try to Save As on that page it tells me I'm downloading an HTML file and what it actually gives me is an MP3 with zero bytes of data. But if I copypaste the link onto another page like this it works fine.

That still doesn't explain why it works for you guys and not me.

The link redirects to the MP3 using a 302 status response, but is in itself an empty HTML page. Saving it just saves that empty page. You can grab the "real" URL from the location bar once the MP3 starts streaming in the browser. Maybe another browser will handle it as you expect.

They all work fine for me, whether I'm right-clicking the link itself, or following the link and right-clicking the page.
I use Chrome.

But I still don't get the real URL.

Here is the GWJ download compared to the TMA, the URL is what I get if I click through.

Copy Link Location: http://traffic.libsyn.com/gwjcc/GWJ_...
URL: http://hwcdn.libsyn.com/p/5/a/e/5ae3...

Copy Link Location: http://traffic.libsyn.com/threemoves...
URL: http://hwcdn.libsyn.com/p/b/b/e/bbe8...

The only difference between the two sets of links is that when I Save As on the GWJ page it gives me an mp3 and if I try to do the same thing on the TMA page it gives me HTML.

Hey that works, if I click through the Get MP3 button and right click on the background behind the mp3 player the only option I have is Save Page As. That does save the MP3 properly.

So that part at least works as intended, the only mystery is why the Get MP3 button is broken for me.

Spoiler:

Chrome > Firefox?
*dances off stage*

This is probably the first major issue I've ever had with Firefox. I did some additional testing, the link works fine in IE. I restarted Firefox in safe mode without any addons and the problem persists. I tried another computer in the same house and both browsers work the same way, so the issue is something about Firefox or the TMA website that changed in the past two weeks. If the TMA website didn't change at all then Firefox 38 must be to blame. But then Micheal says HIS Firefox works fine and I use the same version, so maybe the TMA website just hates Canadians? I guess the only sure way to test it would be for you to download Firefox and try the link yourself.

On a related note is there any easier way to download the Giant Bomcast than going to each individual webpage and downloading the MP3s directly? On a PC that is, I know that sort of thing is much easier if you have something like itunes.

Well, Troy is Canadian, so he would not let that stand.

I've never used it, but I believe that's what Juice is for. It simply manages subscribing and downloading, and then you can play the podcasts in the audio player of your choice. As far as I can tell. http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/

D-d-d-ouble post!

Hey all, some friends and I are getting together to make a MTG Podcast and I was wondering if this is the right place to ask advice on how to make it? This is our first time making a podcast so I'm certain we'll have questions. If I'm in the wrong place I'll move on. Thanks.

I'm not sure on the threadiquette of discussing that here (maybe a mod will stop by), but feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I may have answers!

Oops, I was asking in another thread and I was directed to a gaming podcast thread but if this isn't the right one I'll remove or whatever is required, sorry.

Also, thanks, I will probably take you up on that offer in the near future.

Oh, I mean I literally don't know. I have no idea if this thread will work or not. For all I know it's fine!

.

Well, I figure I'll find out sooner or later.

I think this would be a fine place to ask, especially since some of the guys do their own podcasts and request specific feedback each episode.
There's this article from 2008. I thought there was a more recent one, but can't find anything.

If you want to go hard core, you could try an RSS configuration for FlexGet. I still find YAML inscrutable, though. I've also used the Zune desktop software for this in the past.

I have recently come to realize that trying to put out a research-intensive podcast plus train for a triathlon, bike race and 1/2 marathon over the summer leads to some time management issues.

Yay for understanding listeners!

If your podcast catcher is setup like mine, you may find yourself downloading the last few months of the GWJCC whenever you start it up next.

Due to the new server etc. presumably.

So I got around to listening to the first part of DLC's E3 podcast yesterday during work, and there were moments where I was literally too distracted to even comprehend what was on my monitor. I visualized myself throwing big, gorilla fist-sized rocks at the heads of Spicer and Cannata and guest.

Look, I understand. Nintendo's E3 Press Conference wasn't as good as years prior. They had a limited amount of content that could appeal to a mainstream audience. I understand they're not exactly delivering what everyone wants. But in the same breath that you criticize them for releasing games "in the same five franchises", you then criticize them for not releasing a new "true" Metroid game. A franchise that most other publishers would have abandoned by now because it just doesn't sell compared to the franchises that they keep releasing new titles for. And let's just completely forget that Splatoon, a brand new IP that is beyond excellent, released just a few weeks ago. And let's also feel free to keep calling titles like Gears of War first party IP for Microsoft but completely ignore that Xenoblade Chronicles is almost the same thing (I mean, at least Nintendo owns Monolithsoft).

I mean.... it's hard not to sound like some sort of Nintendo Justice Warrior when everyone's arguments are either easily refuted or just plain dumb. I would love to sit there and say "Yeah, all of these games are for niche markets and aren't going to work for a mass audience". But that's not what you're arguing. You are arguing that Nintendo is bad at their job.

And I just....URGH!

So that's my first truly negative experience with the DLC podcast. I now want to shove Spicer and Cannata's heads in toilets and hit the flush until they apologize.

...okay not really. Just... very angry.

Personally, I thought Nintendo's press conference was great. The game selection wasn't my wheelhouse, but it was light and fun and there absolutely needs to be room in gaming for a major company to be doing this stuff. I mean for god's sake, they had puppets! You can't hate on puppets. It's the law.

Also, Chris, just listened to your Pre-E3 show and thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to listening to the E3 proper recording on my drive home today. (Btw, pretty sure it was Bill Abner who referenced having to fight off Best Buy's rank and file for demo time at past E3s. God, but those were some fun shows.)

I dunno, at this point N can probably do no wrong for you (exaggeration I know). On the other hand, Spicer and Cannata are hardly what I'd call big Nintendo fans (despite their frequent protests to the contrary). And, really, you can't expect anyone who isn't already on the N train to be particularly excited about anything in Nintendo's briefing. I wouldn't really expect the typical N fan to be excited about Gears of War either.

Anyway, I refer you to the Magic Hour podcast for your regular reassurances that all is right in the world of N ;).

Chris, I dunno man - I was definitely a little bummed on the heels of the digital event. In reflection, my negativity was a result of the sense of disappointment being so fresh. If we had recorded our follow-up today, my tone would be completely different.

I was definitely saddened by the reliance on amiibo (even though I love those darned things!) and focus on 3DS titles. Those puppets were AWESOME! If, perhaps the order of games shown in the presentation had been a little different, I might have come away feeling different. Or, if they'd just let me play 3DS games on a big screen.

There are and were games for EVERYONE on the WiiU. Splatoon is AMAZING and I would be happy to be able to focus on that for a few more months. SMTxFE (or whatever it's called) looks a heck of a lot better than I thought and XenobladeX is going to take years to complete.

My final thoughts on reflection, and by hour two of the last podcast, I think I'd leveled out enough to express it. Awesome Nintendo Directs all year long are going to result in less than amazing E3 announcements sometimes. It's the trade off. We get the news spread out, while MS and Sony can show amazing things all at once for the next year or two.

XenobladeX would probably float my boat as a JRPG fan but when I have a PS3 that is always going to have at least an order of magnitude more JRPG content than the WiiU, there is no way for me to justify the expenditure on an entire platform.

Anyway, sorry to hear about your disappointment! I'm surprised to hear you say anything close to negative on the amiibos, I could hear the love in your voices in the episodes I listened to :).
