Borderlands 2 Catch-All

Got to admit, I don't like how Borderlands does melee weapons. It's a loot game. It's about getting neat new items and using them to murder things. Your melee weapon is always the same, except when you find a weapon with a bayonet (in which case it does slightly more damage and the animation's different). It's boring to me.

Given that the Zero character has a high emphasis on the sword, it's possible, even likely, they're changing this up for the sequel.

They say will be able to, but really mean will have to. It's still a good thing in my book, which is why they get to say it the way they do.

I will be very sad the day Steam dies in 20XX, though.

They said in the Zero character profile interview that this is not the case. They said his/her blade materializes out of the handle whereas guns are completely constructed out of the holster. That apparently explains why there are no melee loot drops. How, I have no idea.

This game has just been disappointment after disappointment for you, Demyx. I think your Vriska avatar is stealing your luck.

I know it shouldn't, but the weapons materializing out of the holster is the type of retcon that bothers me in a really really nerdy OCD way.

I wish they'd limit it to certain makes, like the Tediore guns that you're supposed to just throw away. It doesn't make sense that you're materializing a makeshift bandit gun that's been scraped together out of spare parts.

Man, I missed that. Darn.

You'd think she'd be in favor of a game with tons of randomized loot...

Yeah, it's weird. I like toting around my trusty sniper rifle. Having it materialize out of thin air makes it like a fakey Matrix gun.

Huh? Retcon? Maybe you should join a friend in the first Borderlands and watch them switch weapons...

All of the characters have similar looking hostlers the in the first game that they kinda wave their hands over and materialize their guns out of.

Well there we go. I never played multiplayer so that explains it. So basically they're just giving narrative justification (and some extra graphical effect) to explain how weapon switching has always looked in every Unreal Engine based multiplayer game. I can get behind that.

Sorry for the ranting, it just seemed really weird in that trailer considering I never saw that before in the first game.

EDIT: Now I wonder if they're going to give a narrative explanation for texture streaming / pop-in

This time we finally find out that we've been in the Animus the whole time and we're actually Ezio Auditore's dodeca-great great grandchild.

It's also one of those weird "world building" things where I feel like they had to do it to "differentiate" themselves from the rest of the pack, or they needed someway to justify why your character is walking around with a gazillion guns and no backpack. It's also awkward because you still see a physical gun when you crack open a chest as shown in the trailer.

I'd probably be less bothered if they had established this back in the first game*. I don't care if they weren't planning for a sequel at the start and didn't have a "Borderlands Bible" to cover this stuff. The sequel isn't the time to be laying down basic world building elements like where all the guns come from.

By no means does this dampen my excitement, just... it seems one of those things where they let the writers loose and they flesh out some really minute detail in a very ham-fisted way which didn't need to be touched, probably because they were bored or overfunded. It's like how a lot of RPGs try and explain where magic comes from or how it works. It. Just. Does. No need to pull back the curtain!

Gearbox, why you gotta ruin my brainless shooty fun-times with unnecessary minute details?

* And I'm sure I'm going to be equally annoyed when I go play Mass Effect 2 with it's change from weapons overheating to using expendable "thermal clips"

I think they're saving that for Borderlands 3.

Aaaand it has been stuck in brain so now the:
Claptrap: Oomtze-Oomtze.. Wub wub WUB is my new work-phone ring-tone.

That's pretty awesome. Now where's the Steam pre-order page?

(Also, I still want PS3 cross platform play)

Scratched wrote:

If they follow through with this, Borderlands 2 may become to BL1 what Mass Effect 2 was to ME1. Or Assassin's Creed. Or Diablo. Or Dragon A... err- I believe I made my point.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's nice that they're doing it and assuring us is there, but really working towards the platforms you're publishing on is the sort of thing that should just be standard. They also said last time that the PC would get love and good menus, but wasn't overwhelmed by them, so I'm taking a "talk is cheap" approach until I hear otherwise.

Makes me hopeful that the BL2 PC version will be a lot better than BL1, but most of all, I really like that page.

Okay. I forgive you. Now let me give you my money.

God, that letter just gets me all hot and bothered. Come here, you Claptrap sexy thang!

That list of features, that should be standard with any multiplayer PC games these days. Like Scratched said, talk is cheap, gonna be interesting going down the list checking off what did/didn't get implemented.

I just sent the link to a friend who was in-game in Steam. This is what followed:

Him: lame
Him: steam browser won't let me in
Me: hahahaha
Him: javascript fail
Me: that's so funny since the game is gonna be using steamworks

Hurray! They made a list of features they will be implementing on the PC. No mention of Steamworks, but I can live with these improvements. If there is cloud save support, I'm guessing they are using Steamworks.

-FOV slider
-100% mouse usable menus/mouse wheel scrolling
-Remappable keybindings for keyboard/mouse
-PC-specific UI
-Native multiplayer matchmaking
-Push to talk
-Logitech keyboard support
-LAN support (including offline mode)
-Control pad support
-Integrated V-sync option
-Support for higher resolutions
-Mouse smoothing options (can be disabled completely)
-Cloud save support
-Achievement support
-Friends list support
-No port forwarding required

That's awsome news...

...but why do I suddenly feel like I need to change the locks on the house 0_o

I think it's time for a graphics card upgrade.

Woah. My GTX 470 is not going to be excited to play this game haha.

Damn. I'm gonna need a new video card.

That's a physx demo. Unless something's changed you'll need a pair of cards to get those physics effects working.
