Final Fantasy XIII-2‽ Catch-All

Add me among the list of those that would purchase a PS3 to play a remake of FFVII. Thankfully, I already have one

I could swear I read that they're doing just that, only remaking it for the 3DS, not the DS.

If Square ever does see a truly dangerous drop in profit margins all they need to do is announce an FF7 remake. Gamers would invest in the company to keep it going until that game is released.

I honestly don't know if FF7 has really aged that well. It pretty much defined the JRPG cliche. Cloud is the spikey-haired guy with the giant sword. Sephiroth is the effeminate badass with an even GIANTER sword. Aerith is the quiet healer. It maintained a lot of old mechanics from earlier games and the following generation of games closely mimicked the risks that worked.

You're right that an FF7 remake announcement would make a whole lot of people very happy. The question is if they'd stay happy after actually playing it. You'll notice that Square hasn't remake FF7 but has made a few spin-offs that play nothing like the original. There's probably a really good reason for that.

Wise Lobster is wise.

If you haven't played FF7 since 1997, go have a go. Or watch some Youtubes of it. Chances are that it's a crapload less great that you remember it being.

I totally have, and it is still compelling, if not great. I still wanted to get the eff out of Midgar, still wanted to get Omnislash before disc 2, still insisted on getting Leviathan ASAP, etc. I think the graphics are the only aspect that has fallen behind the times in terms of JRPGs. Because, you know, every JRPG since is modeled on it.

Apologies to DQIX and Suikoden 3.

Don't tease me so!

A quick googling returned an Escapist article claiming that V and VI 3DS remakes were "being considered."

I suggest all in favor go re-buy Final Fantasy VI on GBA to spur them in the right direction.

I'd buy a ps3 for a remade FFVII as well, but, if if a remastered, remade FF6 was being made and released/playable only in japan, i'd f*ckin move. That game is by far, in MY opinion, the best game in the entire franchise. Hell, even in the entire roster of Square and Square Enix. They simply haven't matched it yet. I find it just too sinister, too evil, that every single FF title has had some sort of reboot, remastery, and/or sequel to it, except 5 and 6, only for the GBA. It truly, truly sucks.

They remake FF6 with current tech, money will spill out the building.

...yes, dammit, i'm a ff6 fanboy...aaaargh!!!

We're gonna get punched in the balls by the derail police, FWIW.

I just watched the trailer to FFXIII-2. I uh, stopped liking FFXIII at the same point most people started liking it (the planet surface), so who knows. I would hope the performance on 360 is a little better this time, you guys think it'll be?

In the end I'd rather play Versus-XIII, but if they stick to their exclusivity guns I guess I'm boned. Or maybe I'll eventually cave and buy a PS3.

Yeah, I played it annually, usually mid-winter, for years, and still really enjoy it. Conventional Wisdom says it hasn't aged well, but I don't think Conventional Wisdom is really thinking very hard. There are elements of FFVII that have been often copied, but never improved upon.

FFXIII's biggest issue for me was the way it was structured--both the long corridors, and the long sections where you had 2 characters in a 3 character system. I thought the system was really interesting, but it was also obviously far tougher to balance. I hated the 2 character sections way more than the corridors.

Err, weren't the sales for FFXIII and FXIV Online so abysmally bad, that it forced Square-Enix to do some financial restructuring in the company which pushed back the development of Deus Ex 3 by a year or two? Heh.

Not XIII, no. It was touted as the fastest selling title in the series in the US, with over 1m. sold in the first five days of release.

XIV is a catastrophe in every manner imaginable, but I don't recall hearing it had anything to do with Deus Ex.

It went over 5 million in sells somewhere around March. It was one of the games that gave square record breaking profits.

I haven't played XIII yet and I noticed the spoilers for the game in the new trailer. Fortunately I have no clue what they are talking about (not knowing who's called what) and I'll probably have forgotten the details by the time I finally do play XIII.

Copious amounts of alchohol?

Bad memory for names; especially Japanese fantasy names. Someone died but I have no idea who :).

The "fastest-selling" tag doesn't mean as much for FFXIII, considering that it was the first mainline entry in the series to be a multi-platform release. That said, it's not clear how much impact FFXIII or FFXIV had on DE:HR, given the deliberately vague wording in Square Enix's announcement of the delay:

Square Enix (via [url=http://kotaku.com/5714067/new-deus-e... wrote:

Kotaku[/url])] With weak sales performance of console game titles that have been newly released during the current fiscal year as well as harsh market feedback regarding a key title, the Group recognizes the reinforcement of development capability in our Digital Entertainment segment as our most critical managerial issue.

We therefore have decided to spend additional time to further polish our upcoming game, DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION, resulting in a shift in release timing from our prior plan of the current fiscal year to next fiscal year.

Square Enix also released some sales bombs like Nier, Supreme Commander 2, and Front Mission Evolved. If they ran into trouble with sales, I honestly doubt it was with Final Fantasy XIII.

I'd definitely enjoy them taking a different course, and try for a new style, as they have done in the past. Because of technology limitations one could say, the NES games look alike, the SNES games look alike, then 7 and 8 have similar style, then 9 went back to a more sprite-driven style, then 10, 11, 12 and 13 have gone into making them look "real" style.

I'd love for them to try to change the art style again, as they did with FF9. With today's technology, that would be very, very interesting, AND, I think it would help accentuate the fact that each entry is a stand-alone title. I understand why 13, 13-2 and Versus look similar, it's the same universe, but perhaps for a later installment...FF15, could be interesting. Just a thought.

They really don't even have to redo the graphics. All I would want is a fully orchestrated soundtrack, and I'd probably pay somewhere around full price for it.

Oh, hello, thread.

There was a new trailer for XIII-2 at this year's E3:

And a bit about the battle system:

And of course the Wikipedia entry is up to date with a lot of information from E3, including new mechanics, a bit of the story, and so forth.

I'm surprised to find myself quite so interested in this game. FF XIII was a weird one. I finished it, and mostly enjoyed it, but was also disappointed with it. Couldn't be bothered to do the post-game grind, so I'm confused as to why I'm so interested in this game.

Could be that I'm a shameless franchise-whore - I'm willing to accept that.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens to this game. I'm at best lukewarm on it but then if they've learned lessons... we'll see.

I wouldn't think twice about buying a 3DS to play an FFVI remake, or for that matter, any system that game would grace with its presence.

As for FFXIII-2, I await with guarded excitement, as I wasn't completely sold on the combat system from the original game. Here's hoping the gameplay has improved in more ways than one.

Would you like an eight minute long trailer?

Edit: Confession: I couldn't watch past the five minute mark. Having not played the first one, the plot points are pretty much nonsense to me, and that pop song is awful.

The pop song was bad, but it's your typical JRPG fare these days. As for the game itself, I'm tentatively looking forward to it.

Hope looked more grown up and less whiny. That makes me happy.

Figured I'd necro this thread in anticipation of the FF XIII-2's release later this month.

There's been some discussion of this game over in the JRPG thread. Word from Japan is that this game is really pretty good. It got a 40/40 in Famitsu, for those of you who put stock in that kind of thing.

The demo is up on at least XBLA now, and there have been some pretty positive impressions of it. It sounds like a lot of the complaints people had about Final Fantasy XIII have been ironed out. Anyone read any State-side reviews or previews yet?

Edit: I'd also like an answer to this so I know what to do with the thread title:

Played a bit of the demo then stopped, realizing I was going to play the game anyway so why spoil things for myself.

I didn't even bother with the downloading part - I'm definitely going to play the full game at some point. I didn't love 13, but was one of those flawed games that got its hooks into me and wouldn't let go.

I'm in this boat, except that it's a day 1 purchase for me. Gotta find some way to spend February, right?

Yep, day 1 purchase for me after hearing anything resembling positive reviews. I personally really enjoyed FFXIII. Really looking forward to XIII-2. I'm also apparently weird in that I loved X-2, as well.
