XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Strategy Game - Developed by Firaxis

So I've been arcing aliens left right and centre early, but it won't let me equip the pistol or rifle I've gained from doing this, saying it needs research. When I look in my engineering build list the guns I've gained on the battlefield aren't listed in the tally there, but I do seem to see the guns in the barracks' inventory.
Can my one help me with what specifically where I need to do so these weapons are usable by my squad members?
It's now 5:30am, wow this game is addictive.

I had a mission where the AI made some odd choices and I ended up just coasting through, only ever having to move my guys once each at the very beginning. I just threw them into overwatch every turn and things kept running into their vision and getting wasted. It was awesome.

*Also, first run in with a cyberdisc about twenty minutes ago, but had major ground between me and it when it appeared so it took multiple sniper shots and hits from laser rifles before it ever closed even half the distance. Not sure I want to know what they do when they actually attack.

*Also, lost a Colonel (!) level Support character in the first minute I played today. She took three rather improbable hits from three separate Mutons while behind full cover and from fairly far away. Killed her right off on their first actual turn. Was super upsetting :(

They ate rockets and an alien grenade the next turn.

This is why my current play through isn't ironman. I eat the deaths of soldiers when I screw up, or when they get worn down. When the RNG decides that a single Thin Man standing on a bus can dodge a dozen attacks and wipe me out? Load Game.

You have to unlock the research for those weapons before you can actually use them.

Well, from what I've read in various places the confirmed fixes so far are:

- Key rebinding now works.
- Ant farm zooming now works (middle-mouse click and drag). Why we can't just scroll the mouse wheel I'm not sure.
- Getting stuck on "Alien Activity" is fixed.

1.8Gb, eh?

Well, that's just what people have noticed so far. I'm sure there's more to it than that, but we'll have to wait for the patch notes.

I had an issue where after I reloaded a save in the middle of a fight, the dead floater corpses were hovering in the air, even though they were still dead.

They do call them aliens, after all. Weird stuff is supposed to happen. Duh.

I had something similar with a dead zombie and after a reload it was just standing there...

I started the game on my laptop but didn't think to check steam cloud support. Anyone know if it does?

I don't reload single losses, even high-ranking ones. But too often, you get a cascade of these results that lead to a complete team wipe without the possibility of retreat. I'm less okay with that, especially if it's a team of majors or something.

Skimming and tagging since I still have a lot to catch up on, but I'll just say that I'm really really enjoying the new Xcom so far. Normal seems a little easy so I may restart on Classic, but I'm glad I didn't go Ironman to start as I've learned a whole lot of things since starting.

One question, the game has the cloud save support icon on my Steam list, but when I loaded it up at work none of my saves were there. Anyone have an idea of what the deal with cloud support is?

1.8Gb, so I won't be able to play until tonight. Likely has to doing with upgrading the 720p movies to 1080p, since that was expressed in the patch notes.

1080p movies are already on your HDD. They are just not used.

Any word on patch notes? I'm not finding anything anywhere!

Patch notes:

• Various visibility/hiding optimizations
• Multiplayer text chat support (press J to activate)
• Mouse button 4/5 will switch soldiers in the Barracks
• ESC hides the movement grid, if you do not want to commit to a move while it is activated
• Squad Sight ability optimization
• Fixed issue when equipping two grenades with Deep Pockets.
• Fixed Rapid Fire sometimes consuming too much ammo.
• SHIVs that are damaged will no longer become unusable.
• Fixed some hangs/soft crashes in tactical combat.
• Replaced software cursor with the operating system cursor to reduce lag and framerate dependence.
• Fixed rendering bug which causes some soldier’s hair to appear as if it is rendering on top of environment fog.
• 1080p movies are now used at all times on the PC.

I had hoped they would allow the camera to stay instead of swinging around like it's in Studio 54. Glad to see the patch about the hangs / soft crash in combat, though!

My absolute biggest complaint is the camera's absolute refusal to stay at the level I set it at. Every time I go into a UFO be it crashed or just one that landed, it drives me friggin batty that it zooms back out to being completely unable to see my guys every time I switch between them.

This. IN CAPS. The camera is impossible to deal with on certain maps (I'm looking at you urban terror maps with multi-story buildings, and UFO landings where there are rooms flanked by catwalks). In the scenario I just played I literally could not position the mouse where I wanted people to go because the camera interpreted it as hovering on the tiles of the floor below/through the wall. I took what I could get movement-wise and got promptly walloped by a pack of berserkers. Reload, pray for a different map.

Oh, and:

• SHIVs that are damaged will no longer become unusable.

YAY!!!

I actually just looked into the camera zoom issue and I set it up to no longer auto-zoom in to your soldiers when ever you switch units. Now, wish me luck that I can convince the powers that be to allow me to check it in.

The issue with the mouse selecting the wrong level, have you seen that since the patch?

Edit: Oh, and if you want to watch some Russians play the game on Impossible Ironman, check out this twicth tv channel. They are currently on attempt 10.

Yes, I just played an hour or so ago. I believe it was a UFO landing mission, but the structure was different than other ones (it was briefly after the hyper-whatever scan).

I'm aware, but they may have renamed them in such a fashion to force another download. If not the movies, then I don't know.

I'm seriously regretting Ironman now. Just lost all three Colonel characters in one turn, two to ridiculous enemy spawns where guys just hopped into the level from nowhere after one of my turns and all my characters missed roughly 90% chance shots. I have basically zero effective soldiers now.

I love Ironman. I also find that losing is fun, as with Dwarf Fortress, so I am not begrudging death, even when it feels "unfair". I guess I'm a masochist.

If I have one major gripe with this game, it would be that enemies "spawn".

It is just such a kick in the pants when you sweep an area and then aliens show up there later. Or when moving one square too far while flanking spawns 3 thin men who then poison you and make the 2 mutons you were originally fighting much harder to kill.

That said, I am loving the game.

I believe you can capture a Chryssalid, though I'm not 100% sure of that. So don't blame me if you try and end up with a zombie a turn later.

You can't stun Chryssalids. They don't have any weapons and can't be interrogated anyway, but their bodies can be used to make some kinds of equipment. KILL THEM ON SIGHT.

That would be phenomenal! IMAGE(http://www.thefossilforum.com/public/style_emoticons/default/fingers%20crossed.gif)

Has anyone ever had a problem with ALL of their soldiers getting stuck " On mission" so that you can't use them?

This happens whenever I'm back in base and a new alien alert shows up.
What mission are they on? How do you get them back so you can use them?

I finally got so frustrated I deleted them and created new ones. but I lost alot of veterans that way..

That's a relief.

This is all I want for christmas.

Anybody know if the "stuck staring at the north pole" bug has been fixed in mission control?

--edit--

While you're at it, any chance to also add a toggle button that allows us to draw all walls? The algorithm that decides when to draw something and when to hide is often not synergizing with my notions of what should be visible and not. Especially when my guys are "hiding" next to walls that may or may not be there.
