Of course Steam decides last night to stop letting me purchase anything regardless of any payment method I try. Anyone know how long I should expect their support center to get back to me?

Could you buy it somewhere else and just register the key? Might be cheaper even.

I may just do that.

First pair of missions after the tutorial, we've lost one guy, 3 wounded, and saved a civilian from a fate worse than probing. The team is led by Cpl Quintin Stone, with 8 kills (including the tutorial) and a five-day stint in MedBay. I've got a few other people to name, including one rookie who stepped up on his first mission and nailed three aliens. He's Support track now.

My worst moment came when my second best guy took an unexpected shot and bled out. Quintin and one of the rookies were by him, trying vainly to help stem the flow of blood, when he died. They both freaked out for a minute, but directed their anger at the Sectoids and didn't leave cover. Whew! That was the point at which Mr. New Guy started his cold, methodical rampage.

He had only 2 days to retirement.

Damn it, I just got home to find out steam didn't open and didnt finish downloading the game. I've got 3-4 hours of not playing xcom that I could be playing.....
Still it's good to know everyone is having fun. Throw me into your squads as Z or master0.

I heard he was also too old for this sh*t. RIP.

Played the demo on 360. Bit frustrating, but still looking forward to my copy getting here. The people are teeny tiny on the screen and I would have liked a bit more control - or finer control - over the camera. For some reason I'd prefer to have the left/right cam movement on the dpad reversed. The dpad wasn't as responsive as it should be. It doesn't require multiple presses to register, but the response time on the UI is just a little bit off, as was switching between characters using the shoulder buttons. Likewise moving the 'go to' marker wasn't quite as smooth as I'd liked.

Oh and how on the soldier's upgrade screen they rotate jerkily when you turn them. I liked being able to zoom in to the base, though.

I hope there are better control customisation options in the main game than the demo. Well, I hope there are controller options.

I've watched a lot of videos of gameplay, but even so I found restrictions on actions a bit confusing. I play a lot of boardgames, but for some reason couldn't quite understand which actions put an end to my controlling a character. I don't think I can do partial moves with people, for example. I have to complete all actions with a character before moving on. The BG player understands that, the VG player will have to get used to it, especially given the comparisons to Gears etc.

Well, on my 2nd tutorial mission I learned friendly fire can kill your soldiers. That reckless guy with the rocket launcher shall now be named lobster.

Double post

I forget what they call them but has anyone found any other hidden legends yet?

This is where you use a certain name for your trooper and it unlocks that legend with certain abilities?

I wouldn't be surprised if Ken Levine is one. Jake was gushing about him in one of the videos I watched. I'm not sure if they're all video game developers or if it's a mix of stuff where maybe Chuck Norris or something like that might be in there.

So I got hit by the stupid infinite side scrolling screen issue again. The odd thing is, it was on my 8th or so mission. And then every subsequent mission had it. Finally traced it down to my joystick. Had no choice, but to fix it I had to unplug my joystick.

Also got hit by the bug talked about earlier, where I couldn't position my guys at a certain spot by the edge of a cliff. Ended up jumping my guy off the cliff and right into a group of Thin Men. I suppose it's a good thing I'm not playing Ironman game.

Decided to do Classic difficulty, but not Ironman, until I figure out the ins and outs of the game. I'm glad I did. I'm still not rolling back unfavourable progress, but when I feel that something really bad happened that was not due to my own fault or just RNG bad luck, I will roll back.

This has resulted in deaths in every mission but the first (after tutorial). Which brings me to my thoughts about lower squad size. I can't say it's growing on me. It feels like an artificial limitation that forced a whole lot of other design decisions which feel limiting and are actually lowering the fun factor in the game. Namely, what bothers me are med kits and the whole dynamic between small team sizes, medkits, their limited use. If I don't take med kits, it feels like the game is unduly trying to punish me for it by wantonly killing my high value (consequence of small squad size) units. If I take med kits to try and mitigate some of the obvious punishment mechanics, then I lower my firepower. Fine, I can deal with that, but the problem is the situations where med kits are actually required. I'm facing a xeno that caused my need for a med kit. If I wish to apply the med kit, often times I need to move the person requiring one, as well as the wielder of the med kit. This takes two of my units out of the fight, while the xeno that cause the issue is not being dealt with. Since two units equals half my team in the early game, this really, really hurts.

Since upgrading my team size, I've gone to using 1-2 redshirts every mission as nothing but med kit carriers. Their mortality rate is VERY high. Something that could be mitigated by them carrying a grenade, which they cannot. Why are items so limited in the game? And even if they are, why can't I swap out a pistol for a medkit/stungun? I haven't fired a single shot from any pistol yet in this game. But am constantly short on grenades/medkits/stunguns.

Which brings me to my final gripe (although maybe I'm just missing a game mechanic). Why can't I pick up items from my dead squaddies? If my red shirt buys the farm, and he was carrying the only med kit, why can't my other team mates pick it up?

Finally, I recall seeing in preview videos that players would zoom into various rooms in the base ant-hill. How does one go about it? How do I zoom into the infirmary to see the soldiers in there? Or any other non-specific room of the ant-hill view?

Should have clarified that I meant "how do you open doors with a 360 controller." Guess I'll just lean forward and use the mouse when I encounter a door.

I can confirm that naming your squad mate Chuck Norris doesn't give you a super solider.... or Hulk Hogan... or Steve Urkel...

Brink had grenades that revived groups of downed players.

As a former Navy medic with a Marine Corps scout sniper team feel free to abuse me in either the support/medic or sniper role.

I see no one's reporting nothing bad about the game. It's time to bow out of the thread.

See you all around. Have fun!

For those of you playing the PC version, there's a reddit thread about the cutscene video resolution. Basically, you have a bunch of high-res videos in your install files that aren't being used; why Firaxis didn't enable them is a mystery. http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/commen...

I too would like to know the answer to this. I've tried just about everything to zoom in, but I can't figure it out.

This reminds me... didn't Tkyl promise to share with us how to skip intro vids?

I'm loving how they've streamlined away a lot of the strategic micromanagement and the tactical AP system while hanging on to what made the original game so good. It's too bad you can't sell off extra gear your engineers have produced on the gray market, but that's pretty much my only complaint.

Also, like in the original:

Spoiler:

upgrading to laser rifles is a huge step up. Laser rifles combined with SCOPE allows you to mop the floor with enemies (at least for the first two months). Adding a fifth squad member also helps a lot.

Be careful not to produce too many items though, money gets tight quickly and I found myself selling off alien alloys and weapon fragments to raise the money for satellites.

I've found that you can get by with the follow items for starters:

Spoiler:

1 Medkit
1 Electro-stun thingy
SCOPES for everyone else in the team. (2-4)
Laser rifles for everyone except your heavy and sniper

I bought a bunch of other stuff like armor vests and extra medkits, but I now sorely regret not being able to sell them back.

Bah and I read that's like four gigs of wasted space. I would have the download finished by now....

Left trigger zooms into rooms on the 360.

Idgaf, on the pc version, I can make someone's first move, then go on to other characters and come back to finish up later. I don't know if that is in the 360 final version, but it is in the pc one.

I think I read something like that.

What does the trigger map to? What command is it? I am using mouse and keyboard.

So I pull up to a building, open the door nicely, dash inside THROUGH THE WINDOW right next to the open door!

In XCOM's install folder (In my case, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown) and go through to \XCom-Enemy-Unknown\XComGame\Config\ and open up "DefaultEngine.ini" in a text editor like Notepad.
Under the header ; PC Startup movies (CTRL + F for quicker access), delete the "+" before the 4 entries there. Save and start XCOM and the movies should be gone.

Obviously your operative wanted an excuse to look cool and use the glam cam. I've also seen my guys climb up on to a bus and then jump down when they could just run around it.

Also, a fix for mouse lag: http://www.reddit.com/r/Xcom/comment...

Rather than edit something that Steam will eventually reset, you can do the same thing in \Users\user\Documents\My Games\XCOM - Enemy Unknown\XComGame\Config\XComEngine.ini

Search for StartupMovies and put a # in front of each of those lines.

This, though use a ; instead of #
