This is the first game in quite some time that has me seriously considering taking a day off of work after the release... Which is somewhat less appropriate than it used to be.

As long as you are in a good position financially and with regards to your job itself, just do it. Enjoy your life, bud.

I'm taking a half day that Friday

Also, I played through the demo a second time and the forced dashing that ends up leaving your squad vulnerable to a slaughter bothered me even more than it did the first time

Seriously, how could you not tell that was a damn ambush. The guy was holding a damn grenade in his hand. Never walk up to someone holding a grenade. If you do do that stupid idea take the weapon/grenade away first. Then shine the light on his head.

One of the things that always seemed strange to me is that the normal army is said to be useless/defeated in game. Considering the numbers of enemies a few hundred marines, would probable win most the fights. Then again that would make the fights rather boring.

I believe the term you're looking for is "suspension of disbelief". Although, the thought had crossed my mind…

Enabler Unfortunately, I start a new client next week. No playing hooky for me.

Oh, and OXM Squad #5 is up:

Spoiler:

Holy crap! He got destroyed! Although the fact that a couple of bad calls lead to such terrifying destruction certainly is in keeping with the original. Strangely it makes me feel even more excited for the game.

I was enjoying the first 4 episodes but having played the demo and familiarised myself with it I found this one annoying as he clearly had no idea what he's doing!

Demo's fun. It's not the X-Com 1 demo, which was so strong that I had a friend that explicitly bought a nice computer just to play it, but it's solid.

Gateway 486-33 -- he had bragging rights, for awhile.

I've had a horrible issue with the demo.

If left to its own devices, once I was in the mission and expected to navigate around the map, the game would start scrolling the screen to the right.

I had that happen twice to me as well. I thought it was just something wonky with my keyboard or a stuck key. Each time it happened I was able to get it out of the permanent right scroll by hitting the right arrow repeatedly (along with the other movement keys). Okay, I may have been pounding on all the arrow keys and yelling "Stop scrolling! Stop it!". Either way, it seemed to fix it.

I'm not sure what the trigger was that started it, but if I make some more runs through the demo I'll pay more attention if it happens again.

Okay, so a little experimenting and I found the cause of my issue. It's related to the key mapping since I'm used to WAXD. If I scroll the map using A or D and I press X (intending to move diagonally down) this causes the current character to switch weapons and after switching weapons the camera is locked into scrolling whatever direction it was traveling before X was pressed. To get the camera scroll to unlock I just have to press the key in whatever direction the camera is stuck.

Someone uploaded a utility to change the mission difficulty, the type of aliens encountered and the type of weapons your troops have for the demo.

http://forums.2kgames.com/showthread.php?140536-Demo-Editor-I-just-Made

Note: The change of aliens is only applicable for the second tutorial mission you still have to go through the first tutorial mission (every time) before getting to the new aliens.

Read through that thread and you will find that you can even increase the number of aliens you encounter in the second mission.

Secondly you can change difficulty of the second mission by editing

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\XCom-Enemy-Unknown-Demo\Engine\Config\BaseEngine.ini

Change GameDifficulty=+0.0 to the difficulty of your choice.

0.0 = Easy
1.0 = Normal
2.0 = Classic
3.0 = Impossible

I don't know if this was posted here but RPS has a link to a vid by the developers on "twitch"(?) that has about an hours' worth of gameplay and a couple of different mission variations - including a civilian rescue and whatnot.

It kills me when I look at my friends list and see Tkyl has put 10 hours into the game the last few days. /jealous

That's all?

XCOM is only 10 hours long, confirmed. Start the outrage now.

I'm trying to beat the game on Classic Ironman. Let's just say that the Marvel Superhero Squad isn't all its cracked up to be.

How do you have the game?

Oh good, so we know who to blame!

I have to play another game for review right around the time XCOM comes out. Let's just say I'm going to do my best to power through that one so I can get to the game I REALLY want to play.

Spoiler:

It's XCOM

Brillant.

I really want this game right now. The demo gave me an itch I cannot scratch. I gotta have more X-Com, baby!

I'm boycotting Tykl. I REFUSE to tykl anyone until this is addressed and my reasonable concerns are all pandered to by the developers and publisher.

List of concerns:
1) This game does not have enough Tkyl dancing. We demand a Tkyl dance meme that plays on all monitors and displays within the game.
2) This game supposedly has many of the enemies from the classic game, X-COM.... however, I fail to see a Tykl enemy announced - though I do note that the scumbag known as Sid Meier is present and accounted for...
3) More bacon!

This is what happens when you schedule releases around the world on different days!! >:(

Hey! You stole my line!

Man, Tkyl's got 13 hours in.

You know, they probably pay him money, too.

I played with the utility that let's you change the difficulty of the demo as well as which aliens show up, and the alien switching kind of breaks the mission a bit. The difficulty setting gives you an idea of how tough the game could be, though.

Do you have what it takes to defeat the Alien threat?

Interactive X-Com video? That's terrible! Just terrible, Tkyl! What are you doing to me? :3

It doesn't work. Or at least what I think a word means, you guys don't.

Assault squad> scorched earth (launch ranged explosive attacks)

However, this results in my squaddies running up the centre of the field towards the aliens and firing with their guns and my VO guy saying that by pushing forward I've lost the chance to use rocket launchers and other explosive weapons. Haven't tried any other combination yet...

[edit] In fact picking the other option does what I thought that option above should have done.

Also, both times the VO berates me for not taking cover when, in actual fact, that was never an option! Conclusion: the VO is a d*ck!

[edit2] Yeah, in fact, progressing from there you get sent back and all around via the choose links. A lot of them are broken as far as I saw... Might want to get that fixed by someone, Tykl.
