XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Strategy Game - Developed by Firaxis

What kind of cruel people release a demo on a Monday?! Argh!

1) No rotating the view? Trying to see behind buildings (even with the fade) is annoying.

You can rotate between several angles using Q and E buttons.

Edit: Edwinhausered.

I prefer it to be called pantsed.

Well, I played it...and found it surprisingly enjoyable, given my skepticism at the idea of remaking a much-loved classic. One thing though, I did find the character modelling and voice acting a bit odd, seemed more like something from Jowood than Firaxis.

Also, music is freaking awesome. Like somebody mentioned above it's very similar to Dues Ex: HR.

Same composer. :)

Nice! Very smart, love his work.

Played through twice, as far as I can tell the second mission is the same no matter which choice you make. I also couldn't enable ambient occlusion, anyone else having this issue? Besides those two nits twas a fun little demo.

Demo is super fun.

Also suuuuuuuuuuper short.

I kinda wish I hadn't played it and had just waited for the full game.

This is the reason I'm skipping the demo. I have enough other distractions to carry me through to release.

Tykl, that was hands down the best demo I ever tried. Good stuff. Tense, foreboding and tragic. After losing a soldier in the second mission that final shot from my flanking sniper felt really satisfying.

TACTIC TIP: I left a guy in place who had his cover destroyed by spreading flames and enemy fire. I did that so the aliens wouldn't change position until my sniper got into his position. And it worked. I'm so awesome.

I will definitely be playing this game on the hardest difficulty mode with hardcore/iron man mode switched all the way on.

You're doomed, Strangeblades. Make sure to give us some good AARs. *popcorn*

If I may make a suggestion. Don't play on the hardest difficulty. Play on Classic mode not Impossible. Once you beat that then try Impossible. I can currently only make it a few (4 or 5 missions) in before I feel like I've lost too much to have a chance at winning.

I mean go for it if you want but I think you will have more fun on Classic at first.

That said definitely play with ironman mode on. It the only true way to play.

Classic mode is a difficulty level? It's not a different playing method? Where on the difficulty scale would classic be? Second from the top?

Easy
Normal
Classic
Impossible

Yeah, not going to download the demo. I want all the super freshness and awesomeness for when my pre-order downloads. I really want to, but I'm going to be good and save it all for release day!

See this demo is dangerous for me. I could not play it and than get the game fresh when I do finally get the game. Or I can play it now, be finally pushed over the edge and preorder the damn thing...
Either way it's really encourage to hear a lot of good response for it.

Also I loved this comment from Penny Arcade about the game:

" And certainly, what I’ve played would be marvelous couch-wise. But no, no, no. I could never. "

Weird, just had it kind of soft hang on the second mission. I tried switching my heavy to the rocket launcher thinking maybe I could blow a hole in the wall of a building I was abut to enter. Apparently I did something else, and I got two guys who I couldn't order around. I ordered one guy up, leaving him with one more action, but I couldn't put him on overwatch or hunker down or anything, and then couldn't select my other guy or even end my turn or bring up the menu. Everything was still animating, so I suspect it was just some kind of weird soft lock, but I still shut it down.

Will definitely be getting the full version, but probably no more demo for me.

Played the Demo and it was awesome. What a tease though - waiting until October is ok, still Have Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2 :). I didn't have any game issues at all. The only thing I noticed was a slight stutter during the end of mission cut scene when your plane flies off. Grenades are wonderful and I dig the cut overs to 3rd person. The voice acting being all American of the team seemed odd, especially since one of the scientists had a German accent.

I enjoyed the demo tremendously. Tactical combat seems well done - love the cover implementation - and the two moves/move&fire gives great flexibility to "run and cover". the quick cut-scenes during combat seem just about right in terms of frequency.

We'll see how the base expansion and troop promotions go. Not sure how much I like the troops being type-cast into roles. What if I end up with no support-type troops, for example?

Really like what seems to be a civ-like "choose your approach" in the strategic layer. I can already see trying a few different ways in different play throughs.

Can not wait - which is a shame as I'll have a ton of family and friends in town the week of release.

Was it the sniper guy? Snipers can't go into overwatch if they moved unless they switch to their pistol. You can end a turn by pressing backspace (or at least that worked for me...)

I feel really tempted to buy this.

Allow me to exert peer pressure. It is REALLY good.

Do it!

Also, your hot friend said they totally dig guys who like XCOM and your dad said that XCOM is just a waste of your time!

Shut up Shut up Shut up

*Downloading demo*

Giantbomb has their (very long.. 55 minutes!) Quicklook EX up:

Well that demo felt like playing XCOM. That's good enough for me.

I like that the troopers are at least pretending to wear armor now, even if it has no actual defense rating. In the original, your troops just had jumpsuits, which I guess are just about as useful when you're up against plasma weapons.

I had fun with the demo, but forced scripting makes me sad when I want to replay it.

Oh I wouldn't say that. Jumpsuits still have armour rating and it can save your life.

That Giant Bomb Quick Look was neat. Maybe Tykl might know the answer to this or pass it along to someone who might at Firaxis. At 48 minutes, Jake goes over the different things that happens when a soldier panics. Can they commit battlefield suicide? He didn't mention this but it would be neat if they did.

Oh my god. Not even going to touch the demo, just going to buy this when it drops. This is the first game i've genuinely gotten excited about in months.

Demo was great. Can't wait to buy it.

I downloaded the demo last night, but I too am now thinking that I'd prefer the full release to be completely fresh!

I must be strong and force myself to delete it when I get home!

18 days to go!
