Unlike 2K Marin's previously announced XCOM shooter, which sparked tempers among longtime fans for turning its back on the series' cerebral roots, this title is a full-on strategy game that puts players in command of a global anti-alien defense force. XCOM's leader needs a worldwide perspective where threats are identified, populations reassured, and national leaders mollified – but a tactical mind is just as critical considering every shot XCOM's soldiers fire on the battlefield is under the player's turn-based control.

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

The huge feature in February's Game Informer goes into all the gory details of XCOM's destructible tactical environments, the interaction between the real-time strategic view and the turn-based combat, how the XCOM organization improves its capabilities as the war rages on, and much more.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown comes out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC this fall

Ohhhhhhh snapppppp!

Bah, I was just typing it out! You beat me to it.

Exciting!!

HEAD. SPLODE. SQUEEEEEEEEEE.

I... um... wow. Santa came through after all.

So this is what Tkyl is working on, right?

I have high hopes that this will be a version of Xcom that I can actually play. I always find the interface and gameplay in the original to be the exact opposite of intuitive and completely impenetrable. I love all the core ideas of the game, and I want to like it, but I've never been able to actually play it. It always puts me off within half an hour.

This is a nice surprise. Now someone convince EA to make a proper Syndicate.

I expect this will be exactly what the RPS blog post will look like.

Attaboy =)

When you said you went to Firaxis and you were working on something you couldn't talk about but we would be pleased with, I assumed it was Alpha Centauri. This is just as good.

And, um, if you could get Alpha Centauri off the ground, that would be excellent. kthx.

Awesome. I like that Firaxis is doing it too. Although its different developers, the original XCOM and Civlization titles were both published under Microprose. It's kinda like keeping it in an extended family. (in a nice way.)

I used to love those Microprose game boxes, with their chunky manuals etc.

Anyways, I'll be very excited about this one.

OH MY GOD

I already posted once, but... *dance dance dance*

Is it out yet? Can I have it?

(No? Damn. Will have to set a reminder on my phone to check again tomorrow.)

I wonder how this will affect development of Xenonauts. I can't imagine they'll be able to charge $30 for that game at this point.

Insert Starcraft Terran Marine voice : "Hell, it's about time"

Apparently the XCOM fps is releasing this year as well? That seems kind of strange. Maybe 2K will just rename the fps and/or push it back to 2013?

Hurray! Now I can fully ignore the FPS one without worry.

Bold prediction: all interest in the XCOM shooter dies completely.

Now if they'd start looking at other parts of their back catalog - Covert Action, or the aforementioned and excellent Alpha Centauri, or even - dare I suggest it - a remake of Darklands with a modern GUI?

Well, anyway - SQUEEEEEEEEE!

XCOM, the shooter, is due out in March. It was supposed to be released this past fall, but it got pushed back for retooling. It's a bit weird to have two games from the same franchise release in a single year, but it's not unheard of, especially since they're very different genres.

Bolder prediction: XCOM will outsell XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Time to change my pants..

Woot

This is funny because I was just whining in the Jagged Alliance remake thread about how nobody makes those squad turn-based games anymore. Totally excited.

To be totally honest, I was hoping that that new IP that Firaxis was working on to be either Covert Action or Hyperspeed/Lightspeed. Loved those games. Was right around the time I really got into PC gaming....

But yeah, X-Com: Enemy Unknown! woot!

You know, I'm a little disappointed by this but only because it's not coming to 3DS. Turn-based strategy games like this work better (for me) on a handheld than a console. (Blah blah, PC gaming master race, blah blah.)

GWJ has someone on the inside? Is that why they are making X-COM again? You infected Firaxis with the site's love for blowing up walls, killing aliens and naming crew members after family members?

"Look, an alien in the gas station! Ready the rocket launcher!"

I'm just happy a AAA (or AAA-ish) tbs game is being made.

I'll be pissed if Patrick Stewart isn't in the game again.

I suspect no game will truly ever replace the original X-Com due to the nostalgia factor, but a new turn-based squad-tactical game with modern production values being developed by Firaxis? YES PLEASE!

When this is released, all other games will immediate relegated to my backlog.
