2011 Community GOTY Results!

If I'd played it sooner than Christmas day, Skylanders would have been in my top 10.

Actually, I think Skylanders is going to get a solid run at "Classic GOTY" at the end of this year due to all the people who didn't play it (or didn't play it much) until after Christmas and thus didn't vote for it in 2011. I know for me, it's going to show up in my top 10 at the end of this year for sure.

And I will be shocked if Xenoblade doesn't nab my #1 spot at the end of this year.

Portal 2 eh?
Totally did not click with me. It wanted to tell a story more than it wanted to be a puzzle game, and because of that I think it was a poor puzzle game.

A puzzle game won? Clever trumps awesome, I guess.

Yeah, shame about Deus Ex.

Nah, clever + awesome trumps just awesome.

No SpaceChem?! This is a travesty!

A thought - the best selling game of the year was MW3. Yet I don't recall seeing it on a single list presented in this forum.

Now it is true that quality does not necessarily equal sales, are the members of this forum so removed from the, let's say "masses" that the best selling game of the year doesn't make a single top 10 list?

It would have been my 11th, probably. This community has heavy leanings in certain directions (with some outliers), which usually swings popular opinion away from CoD. Someone else mentioned a lack of Nintendo-platform games, which is also a result of the situation. It's why we have a thread dedicated to JRPGs in general (frequented by maybe ten of us), not every one released like you'd see on, say, 1up. And why we have a catch-all for every random indie game. Just audience skews.

The people that make up probably 75% of CoD sales do not visit gaming forums, especially boards that have to be dug for at all, like this one.

Edit: Hmm, someone that lives in Bizarro-Wilmington...

Beats me. The annual CoD entry is one of my gaming guilty pleasures; I enjoy the multiplayer, but it's almost like channel-surfing for me. It doesn't make my top ten unless there aren't ten super-awesome other games (which, for example, there were this past year :D).

So yeah, they're fun, I buy them each year, but yet they're not generally top ten material for me.

It didn't make Screwattack.com's (on gametrailers) top 10 community GOTY either. In fact, I'm not even sure it made the top 20.

Edit: Nope, didn't make the top 20 there either, though BF3 made it to 16, Minecraft 15, Catherine 12, and Dark Souls 11. Heck, even Duke Nukem Forever came in at #17, to which the hosts ask "what the heck is wrong with you guys?"

Basically this. I buy them each year and enjoy the MP for as long as I can and then move on to other things. I have limited time.

Each year I play less and less, though. I'm definitely growing tired of war shooters.

Thanks for the hard work clocky, the results post looks awesome!

If anyone cares, Edge's GOTY was Zelda. Modern Warfare 3 was one of 2 runners up for best online game. Mario Kart 7 was best portable game.

Great write-up Clocky, <3 the format.

Maybe they just like fun?

I mean, for crying out loud:

Spoiler:

Duke begins the final boss battle with the taunt "I'm going to rip out your eye and piss on your brain!" And at the time he's holding nothing but a pistol.

And then, after you beat the boss, you get to walk up to the boss's empty eye socket and hit a button to fulfill the threat.

Crude? Base? Vulgar? Yes. Also awesome.
