Don't Be Scared, It's Just the Pile

Pages

Welcome to the end of the year pile extravaganza. This one goes for three months, mainly due to all of the new releases that come out this time of the year. Those tend to have the strangest effect on a person's ability or desire to play pile games.

We'll be back in January with a brand new thread.

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Pick's of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the Google doc I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

The year end Pick of the Pile is

[size=30][b]Borderlands

IMAGE(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_youDodHPNWo/THqcQb-8tOI/AAAAAAAAAPM/gssAcNbjF1k/s320/borderlands_endgame.jpg)

"Borderlands is set on the planet of Pandora. Lured by its apparent vast deposits of minerals, several colonization ships sponsored by the Dahl Corporation (one of several diversified mega-corporations that appear to control and govern entire planets) journey to the planet and build settlements there. The mining operations are cost-effectively manned by large amounts of convict labor brought to the planet by Dahl.

Prior to the events of the game, one of the other mega-corporations, known as the Atlas Corporation, had found an ancient vault on a nearby planet known as Prometheus, filled with alien technology that allowed them to make leaps and bounds in starship and weaponry technology, and overtake their competitors. The presence of similar alien ruins scattered across Pandora spurs the Dahl Corporation to undertake an extensive search for a possible vault on Pandora, headed by a respected xeno-archeologist by the name of Tannis. However, the Dahl-sponsored search for a vault on Pandora turns out to be fruitless, and the massive industrial mining operations soon deplete the bulk of the mineral deposits. Furthermore, the coming of the planet's summer unleashes hordes of dangerous alien wildlife coming out of hibernation.

Those who are rich and important enough to leave the planet do so, leaving the rest of the population to scavenge for their living in isolated settlements, seeking out a living in the barren wastelands and industrial trash heaps across the planet. To make matters worse, the Dahl Corporation simply opened the gates of the prison labor camps during their departure, and gangs of bandits terrorize the populace. Despite the lack of evidence of its existence, legends persist of "The Vault"—a supposed treasure trove of alien artifacts, technology, and of immeasurable wealth—but it is rumored that any who had discovered it were wiped out by a protective force, leaving few clues as to its location or purpose while a myth was born of the marvelous treasures within." My current end of year plans include, but are not limited to:

Syberia (PC) - Arrived at the second locale. Not sure how far in that means I am.
Prince of Persia (2008) (PC/multi) - Put in 2 hours last night and adore it so far!
Magicka (PC) - coming in cold
Zoda's Revenge: Startropics II (NES) - 20 years after beating the original, I'll give the sequel a go. SNES arrival ensured it got shelved back then.
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Gamecube/multi) - I apparently lost my save of several missions in. Oh well.
Elite Beat Agents (NDS) - 8 songs down. Now comes the challenging part. Hopefully the final song doesn't take me 100+ tries like it did in Ouendan.

I might also try to knock off Clock Tower 3 (PS2) and Fire Emblem (GBA) from my 6 year old pile commitment, but I won't make promises on those. I have a long way to go in CT3 and it's not that good, and Fire Emblem is just plain punishing in the final 5-8 missions.

Let's kick this end of the year pile-clearing extravaganza off right! Put me down for:

Devil Survivor Overclocked
Persona 3
Costume Quest
Trenched
Metroid
Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars

I'll add more down the line, but this'll get me started.

By which year's end are you planning on finishing?

Definitely Nier. Past that, I'm not sure.

Ugh, I need to participate again. Put me down for Prototype, Project Gotham Racing 3, Enslaved, and A.Creed 2 for the 360. Maybe Super Meat Boy, too, if I'm feeling masochistic.

Here's my end-of-year pile slog:

Torchlight
Dawn of War II and Dawn of War: Chaos Rising
Batman Arkham Asylum
Dragon Age 2

I need some help picking my stretch goal game. Should I go with Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, or Mass Effect?

Ok - It's time to finally put Psychonauts to bed.

The fact that there are now achievements attached to it and they made the fabled meat-circus easier is merely a coincidence.

I'm gonna go after this game, too as I'm over 1/3 through and loving playing it on the PS3.

Before the end of the year, I'd like to finish:

Bully (360) - A game I wanted to finish last month and failed to get into until the last few days of the month. I'm hooked now, though, so this will be the first to fall.
3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3) - Also on last month's pile. Haven't even started it yet.
Strong Bad Episode 5: 8-bit is Enough (PC) - Started it towards the end of last month. Shouldn't take too long to finish.
Oblivion (360) - I've beat everything except the main quest and the Shivering Isles, and to be honest, I didn't think I'd ever have any interest in coming back and finishing those two things. But, the Skyrim media has suddenly made me interested again, so I'd like to finish both up before I pick it up.
LA Noire (PS3) - I lost interest on the second case of the vice desk. I think that leaves relatively few cases left to finish, so I want to go back and finish the game and then get rid of it.

That's probably a good list. If I manage to beat all those I'll add some more 360 games to the list so that I can swap them for something else after beating them.

That might be a good idea. But I have to finish SotC, and I've preordered Dark Souls. This thread is going to be long though, I'll get to it sometime.

Add Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) for me - updated my original post with est completion times.

Not to nitpick, Hemi, but Persona 3 should be under multiplatform. There's a PSP version, too.

He can put "FES" at the end, then it can stay.

I'm going try my hand at...

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (XBLA) (est 5-6 hrs)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (PS2) (est 17 hrs)
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3) (est 19.5 hrs)
Fable 2 (360) (est 15-17 hrs)
PAC Man: Championship Edition DX (XBLA) (est 4 hrs)
Oblivion (360) (est 93 hrs)
Oblivion: Shivering Isles (360) (est unknown)

If I knock out 2-3 of these I'll be happy. More than that and I will be stoked.

Well, that was fast... PacMan championship edition DX is now 100%, achievement wise. I consider that being beat/completed.

I think I'm gonna try:

Bioshock 2
Fable 3
Splinter Cell Conviction
Assassin's Creed
Need for Speed: Most Wanted

That should keep me busy...

ClockworkHouse wrote:

Nitpick noted.

Moved it to multi

Not to nitpick, Hemi, but Magicka should be under PC. I'm pretty sure it's platform exclusive.

I continue to plug away at Deus Ex (the original!). I will not be tempted by the Shadow / Ico collection. Or Dead Island. Or Red Orchestra 2. Or pre-med.

I'll probably pay attention to that last one, however, despite its lack of tempting qualities.

Ugh... death by a thousand cuts....

*sigh* The time has come... and as I am carrying over a couple of games from the previous thread, I'll add one for good measure, so that this thread has something new from my part.

Mass Effect 2
LEGO Batman (1k)
Spiderman: Web of Shadows
Jade Empire (been sitting too long in my laptop; it has to end now)

Forgot I also recently picked up Dawn of War: The Complete Collection. That alone is worth many many hours of gaming...

Please add Mass Effect 2 (360) and Uncharted 2 for me.

3 months and older? Alright lets see...

Dragon Age
Hegemony: Phillip of Macedon
King Arthur collection
Kings Bounty Crossworld and Armoured Pricess (working on The Legend atm)
Machinarium
M&B With Fire and Sword

All of these are from the last end of the year/Xmas Steam sale.

Looking at my pile of Xbox 360 games, I honestly think I can take out the following before year's end:

Dragon Age II
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
Fable III
Transformers: War for Cybertron

A couple more cuts, Hemi: would you swap Metroid and Trenched for Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (DS) and Lost in Shadow (Wii)?

Let's see, I have a ton of medium and bite-sized games, but quite a few massive RPGs as well. I want to knock out at least one of the RPGs, and several of the smaller ones. Please put me down for:

Baldur's Gate
Torchlight
Gatling Gears
Ms. 'Splosion Man
Cogs
Sam & Max 201: Ice Station Santa

I'm sure I'll add in more of the smaller games as I beat, but I don't want to go too crazy. These seem doable for now.

Go for it with BG! Don't be bogged down. Happy to provide motivation and tips if needed; that was a year-long pile entry for me.

I played a bunch earlier in the year, but haven't played in a few months. Probably partly because I knew it would take me more than a month to finish, so this 3 month stretch should help. If I remember, I just recruited Minsc and am on the way to save Dynaheir. I never got much further than that, so I should be hitting new stuff soon.
