Thinking about getting into this. Anything a new person should know?
Expect to die. A lot. Expect to lose. A lot. Expect to be frustrated with the game, the controls, your team.
That said, I own a few different items in game, earned entirely through in game cash, never spent real money (I tend not to, in almost all F2P games, the few exceptions really deserve it). Which means I played it a lot, and I certainly had other options available to me (too many, really).
When you start out, just hit the 'quick game' option, don't worry about picking a server. As long as you are level 1 - 10, it will drop you on a level 10 or below server. A much kinder introduction to the game.
Wow, sounds like a fun game.
*shrug* Its a leveling based unlock controlled free to play FPS, where hacks and buggy code are the norm. Until you learn the game, well, the people that have already invested the time will have an advantage that even raw skill will have a problem overcoming. Going into the game with the understanding that you will die, a lot, until you learn at least the basics, then you are more likely to have fun. Going in blind, or with unrealistic expectations just means you will regret wasting the download&install time. Pugs are pugs, always will be, so you need to go in with the expectation that this will happen, and work around it. And so on. You asked what a new player should know, and I think that this is probably the most important part. The rest you'll pick up in short order.
If the game wasn't fun, then I wouldn't have played it as much as I did. I would still be playing it more, but I hate the rental system the game uses (much like APB Reloaded).
I'll definitely try it and see. The only thing really game killing is rampant cheating, so we'll just see about that

Ehhh, leveling obviously unlocks a lot, but the standard equipment is good enough to get kills, and after one game you can rent a gun for the day that is tricked out. I have not experienced hacks being prevalent, or buggy code as of late. You are definitely not giving the game enough credit for beginners I think.
I have had work mates jump in on random days who only play once and love it. The rental system to me is great because it lets you try out new stuff. Give it a try Carrot and see what you think for yourself. If the game didn't feel accessible to me when I was a newbie I would have played more battlefield, but I have put 30 hours on this after I had recently got BF3 for a reason. The new Siege mode is tight, try it out.
Sorry Lt, I just thought you made the game seem a little bit too underground and unwieldy for beginners, the only thing that worried me at first was the menus, but after a day or so I got used to them.
One last thing, my friend who I work with said to me the next day his first impression was "Its a very average shooter on the surface that I did well enough at so that I wanted to play more but the menu system was a bit scary.", and for good reason, there are a million unlocks and what I would call "Side-Grading". Not Up-grades because everything has a negative aspect to it and if you really wanna dive into this game, then you can get super specific with your class, but to me the rental system makes it very easy to rent and try out a bunch of different high level combinations of pre-made guns.

There is some cheating in the game (they use PunkBuster but as usual, it doesn't work) but it's not at all rampant in my experience. Also, there are servers dedicated to level 1-10 players where the skill delta is much more even for those just starting out.
However, once you start hitting the level 10+ games, things change and it gets harder.
This. I went from top 3 to bottom 3 after the transition from newbie to regular servers. Been placing in the middle more often, but it's a rude awakening.
Zombies:
Going for next-gen means they can use a very similar version to the PC DX11 version.
