2011 - The good, the bad and the ugly

I can't remember where I read it but I believe the 3DS' manufacturing cost was estimated to be low enough that even at $170, Nintendo's still making money on each one. They just thought they could get away with making a lot more. I've almost bought one twice in the last couple of weeks as some Canadian retailers have had big promotions going on them. I fully intend to pick one up eventually, there's just only 3 games I really care to play on it right now and I'm going to wait until there's a few more.

Yeah, I've been thinking about this, too. On the one hand, the 3DS didn't meet its sales expectations at $250, on the other, it beat them at $170. I'm not happy to see Nintendo losing money with each console sold, but I am happy to see the 3DS doing as well as it is. The software lineup has definitely improved, as well.

The price cut helped things almost instantly. I'm still surprised they opted to launch at $250 since it seemed most people were expecting $200. The ambassador program was a nice way to reimburse early adopters and I'm looking forward to playing a couple of the GBA games I never owned. Definitely one of this year's better Cinderella stories.

When Nintendo announced the price drop, they also said they'd be taking a loss on each unit. That's why the bigwigs at the company all took voluntary paycuts. They might have turned that around with improved manufacturing, however.

The Good: Vita WiFi launch price announced at $250.
The Bad: No Monster Hunter announcement yet.
The Ugly: Memory stick prices!?
