Did your pile become less of a mountain? - 2011 in review

Yeah I've just decided to wait on Batman. Pre-order bonuses are only skins that are for those challenge maps. And they'll probably be DLC later. Wait a month or two and grab it on sale for $40 and you'll still have enough $$ for the skins if you really want. It's a single player only game and will still be just as fun later.

Heck I didn't get Batman: AA until 18 months later or so and it was still awesome.

Clocky's pile is like 32 games, which is tiny for this thread, so we're really just pushing him in the mud to make ourselves feel better

XCOM and Silent Hill are both getting released next year, so they're like Bioshock Infinite and not really in the picture (although they all have a release date of March, so things could get messy there ;)). Catherine I'm holding off on until I can buy new (vote with your wallet, and all that), but since a new copy in a few months will be the same as a new copy now, there's not much of a rush.

Really, it's just a question of whether or not the fancy version of Dark Souls and the multiplayer make it better to get it now or if I can wait until after I've reached my completion goal or if I want to add it to The List and get it at a later date, a la Catherine. #firstworldproblems

You make very good points, sir. Very good points, indeed.

Edit: It's only appropriate that a comment about buying a game called "Dark Souls" should be the 666th post in this thread.

All I have to say is: high TA ratios.

Dang, beat me to it. Oh well, here it is anyway, for posterity:

No really, you people suck at this. Try enabling me, and maybe that will dissuade me from future purchases.

You're clocky - you're going to buy it anyway.

And this thread is more about pile management more than disabling. Making smarter choices so that he can play Dark Souls by managing his pile intake.

According to the GameStop by my job Silent Hill is releasing end of October. It shall be an unfortunate sacrifice.

It's an Atlus game.

...So maybe that didn't work. You do know how to push my buttons, don't you?

Gamefly is canceled.

Have dug my heels into Deus Ex:HR and am loving every non-"crap I pressed the wrong button" moment. A second play of this will be mandatory.

I forgot to mention a couple of things that should be on the List.

I have the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection pre-ordered. I've already played MGS 2 and 3 (though not Peacekeeper), so depending on where the pile is in November, I may cancel and wait for a sale.

I also currently have Alan Wake, Star Wars the Force Unleashed 2, and Infamous 2 borrowed. However, I will be (hopefully) moving in the next 2 months, and will need to return them. If I haven't finished them before then, I'll be buying them at some point as well.

Also, for the sake of full disclosure, I was gifted Alpha Protocol on Steam, so that is on the pile now as well.

I think I've worked out my "gameplan" (har har) for the remainder of 2011:

I plan to finish Deus Ex by 9/28 and cancel my Gamefly subscription (again). I plan on purchasing and playing on release day Skyrim, and I'll try to limit all other purchases to games on my "to get" list that have a really good deal going on. Any other 2011 releases or older games on my "to get" list can be Xmas gift fodder or wait until 2012.

Optimistically, I think I could probably get through another 9 games on my pile before the end of the year. The ones I've picked are:

PC - Dawn of War, The Witcher 2, Torchlight, Far Cry 2, STALKER, Trine
DS - Spirit Tracks, Professor Layton 2, Apollo Justice

Sadly the number of games I'll probably get via Black Friday and Xmas will be greater than 9....

Besides my plan to cancel Gamefly next week, I also canceled my WoW subscription (again) and canceled Netflix DVD-by-mail yesterday (kept streaming). Aside from the $46/month I'll be saving , it also feels liberating to have less incoming media to consume.

Unless something changes in the next week, I'll be too busy with Persona 3 to get Dark Souls.

Beat Deus Ex: Human Revolution and The Witcher over the weekend! But also, over the course of the past week/weekend, I bought 4 more games: The Witcher 2, Ghost Trick, Deadly Premonition, and ilomilo. The first three hit my purchase price point, and the fourth was a $5 impulse buy.

Started playing Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, Dawn of War (oldest game in my pile), and Trine (short game according to howlongtobeat, figured would be an easy one to knock off).

I had originally assumed Diablo III and SWTOR would come out this fall, but now D3 has been pushed to 2012 and SWTOR doesn't come out until the end of December (and I'll be visiting family for Xmas when it does come out), so it looks like I have more time to work on my PC backpile.

Yay, Deadly Premonition!

Hi all, new to the boards, but I have a giant pile and want to join in on the challenge! Here's my current list:

(I formatted the list, but it's not showing up. I suspect it's because I'm a new member)

Games in my collection I want to finish:
Apollo Justice
Catherine (DNF)
Dawn of War (A)
Dawn of War - Winter Assault
Dawn of War - Dark Crusade
Dawn of War - Soulstorm
Dawn of War II
Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising
Deadly Premonition
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (C)
Dragon Age 2
Dragon Quest IX
Dragon Quest V
Far Cry 2
Final Fantasy XIII (H)
Ghost Trick
Grand Theft Auto IV (H)
ilomilo
Infamous
Kingdom Hearts DS
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Miles Edgeworth
Mirror's Edge
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (A)
Professor Layton and the Unwound Future
Puzzle Agent (C)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Torchlight
Trine (A)
The Witcher (C)
The Witcher 2
The World Ends With You

(A) - Actively playing
(C) - Completed!
(H) - Started playing, but put on hold because I got stuck or lost interest
(DNF) - Did not complete, either sold or sent back to Gamefly

2011 games I plan to purchase:
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Release Day Purchase
Jurassic Park - Getting free copy

Previously released games I plan to purchase/rent (and at what price):
Bastion - $10
El Shaddai - Rent
Gears of War 3 - Rent
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet - $10
Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors - $15
Okamiden - $15
Trenched - $10

Scratch Dark Souls from my near future purchase list. I have decided to devote myself entirely to the pile until it is, at the very least, at 30% of its current size.

Gears 3 is off the list, but I'm super tempted by the Team ICO Collection and X-Men Destiny. We'll see what happens.

My successes so far this month:

Faxanadu (NES)
Quake II Mission Pack: The Reckoning (PC)
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (NDS)
Impressions here

Another failure was re-buying the Total War pack on Steam in order to get Rome and Medieval II digitally. Doing so added all of the Empire: Total War DLC to my pile as well as Napoleon: Total War plus some of its DLC.

Drat. I'm so far behind.

I'm focused solely on the original Deus Ex. I'm plowing through; put me down for this month.

I faltered and have PS2 copies of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus inbound. For games that are supposedly so amazing, I'm not going to beat myself up over it.

I'm half surprised you didn't use the Team ICO collection as an excuse to buy a PS3

I'm holding out for The Last Guardian as my big system-buying excuse.

Heh, same difference. Then you will need to get the Uncharted games, Valkyria Chronicles, 3D Dot Game Heroes, and the Ratchet and Clank games (if you enjoy them already) when you get that PS3.

My actual plan with the PS3 is to get it way down the line, when they're not being made anymore, and just play the greatest hits that look most interesting to me. Like I'm doing with the PS2, really.

Argh! I've been good. I've been focusing on games I have. I canceled Gamefly. The Deals thread currently sits at ~350 unread posts. I've been staying out of Catch-alls for games I don't own and aren't on the list.

Today is threatening that progress.

I clicked on the XBLA Wednesdays thread earlier without thinking, and someone had posted about a big sale, including Outland for 400 space bucks. I nearly convinced myself that it would be okay to pick it up, since I still have 800 points in my account, so I wouldn't be spending more money.

Then, not much later, I see an email about a new Humble Indie Bundle for Frozen Synapse, plus a bunch of Frozen Byte games if you pay more than average. I'm not interested in all but one of the Frozen Byte games, but Frozen Synapse looks like a lot of fun.

Too many untouched games already.

It is much easier on the wallet. I picked up my PS2 post-PS3 (though still a few years ago) and snagged it and 20-some games for ~$150.
