And so the mainstream attempts at making a Minecraft begin...

And of course, being me, I think it looks awesome.

Or sourceforts with base defence against AI.

Really though, mods and games have been cross-pollinating for years.

Yeah, my cynical opening spiel is mostly in jest, I'm sure this game will find it's own niche. It crams a lot of atmosphere into a very short trailer.

Maybe I should edit the Minecraft comment out and make Nekroman's post look like complete sarcasm.

Uhh, what?

The trailer looks interesting, but I don't see anything that resembles Minecraft.

For some reason, I immediately thought plants v. Zombies when I watched this. Probably way off, but the art style seems ripe for some humor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but will this be the first game since Jazz Jackrabbit that isn't all serious and grim from Epic? (if you exclude Chair/PCF)

The concept sounds fun, which should be a common sentiment about most game designs, but nothing else there inspires enthusiasm from me. Like Scratched mentioned, I don't even know what a cartoon Epic game would be, or if they could pull it off. Also, I love stylized art in games, but the work here looks student-like, or immature. Guess it doesn't help that the trailer is from a camera perspective. Terrible choice for the trailer, btw. Playable characters are pre-teen hooligan/hipsters, ugh. Aliens/monsters menace? Fair enough. Well, at least Cliff warned us this was going to be different.

It's always fun when a trailer just barely hints at gameplay. It gives just enough ideas to make us all dream up what it could possibly be like to play. But not so much that we're immediately reducing it to the kinds of games/styles it'll feel like. In a fall season of exquisitely-executed and yet still been-there-done-that gameplay, nice to see a new IP from a mainstream studio. Here's hoping they bring something new to the table other than the IP!

I'm not so much worried about whether Epic can do another art style, so much as whether they need to for big success. Will this be a little project as a breather (start small, expand with DLC), perhaps while they're working on their next big thing on UE4 and next generation. Will it be a big thing by itself spawning a series. I suppose I'm wondering where the game is aimed at.

This does look pretty awesome, I wasn't thinking about Redwing when I saw it for the first time though.

Ok it should be better now

That's why this one was called a teaser

I think it's the hiding in a fort from bad guys that come out at night part.

It's an old idea, actually I was reminded of I am Legend. Never saw the movie but I loved the book and this trailer reminded me to read it again.

Looked like an upbudget version of die2nite, to my eyes.

The teaser (and what's been said about the game so far) seems to suggest a downloadable title. I just don't see people spending $60 for a Tower Defense game. However, they are looking for a publisher, so maybe retail is on the table still.

What about that says downloadable?

I actually checked the trailer again, it's just a "Copyright Epic Games 2011" notice, plus a bunch of social media links.

PC exclusive and running on Unreal Engine 4

I love their mercenary development style. PCs are doomed until they're not and now they're back at PC since consoles can't keep up with their engine. Epic you crazy bunch of scallywags.

Please include the editor. Please include the editor. Please include the editor...

As far as I can say what Epic need to do, as well as Fortnite being a showcase for UE4 (and hopefully a nice game) they need to get people using UnrealEd4.

Fortnite will have cosmetic micro-transactions like Team Fortress 2: http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/12/ep...

They also said they have no announcement what business model they want to do.

So is it safe to guess that: PC exclusive (for now) + micro-transactions= F2P?

It would be good fit if they can figure out the long tail for this game.

Footage and talking from Comic-Con: http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/b...

RPG elements in Minecraft? Sounds good to me.

I like the art style visually, and I'm happy to see an engine debut that isn't super-serious. But those characters sounded really dudebro. Makes me think some bro down at the frat house saw Coraline and said to his fellow bros over a game of Minecraft, that Tim Burton dude is redonk. Other than that, I'm interested to see how this turns out.

This seems to have been taken down. I know they had asked others to not record, so perhaps this was quashed at Epic's request (someone has an exclusive, perhaps).

I'm so glad this game isn't dead.

fortnite is getting more news, including the monsters.
